Jason Reitman's 2021 film "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," the fourth Ghostbusters film and the third in the continuity of the 1984 original, was a playground for those audiences members keen on rolling around in a warm blanket of nostalgia. Not a since detail from Ivan Reitman's seminal blockbuster went unexploited, from large recognizable elements like the Ecto-1 car and the original model proton packs, to small details like the Nestlé Crunch bar Billy Murray idly slipped into Harold Ramis' pocket in an adlibbed scene. Names like Ivo Shandor and Gozer the Gozarian are repeated openly and frequently. "Afterlife" was a film built specifically for people...

Last year, months ahead of its theatrical release, Sony Pictures Releasing surprised CinemaCon attendees and the internet at large by giving "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" its world premiere at the convention. Instead of just showing off footage from the film, it screened "Afterlife" there in its entirety. This year, the studio has made another surprise announcement that it is officially developing new installments in both the "Ghostbusters" and "Venom" film franchises.
No other details were provided beyond that, but we can hazard a guess about where they might go with a fifth "Ghostbusters" film and a third "Venom" film. "Afterlife" was the fourth installment in the franchise after...

After the success of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” this past fall, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman announced at CinemaCon on Monday night that new sequels for both franchises have been greenlit.
“Venom 3” film comes after “Let There Be Carnage” grossed 502 million in theaters worldwide without the help of a release in China, while Tom Hardy also had a mid-credits cameo in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” teasing the future of Marvel’s symbiote antihero.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” had a more modest box office run but still did well domestically with 129.3 million grossed in North America and 197.3 million worldwide. The upcoming sequel was described as “the next chapter in the original ‘Ghostbusters’ universe,” after a post-credits scene in “Afterlife” in which original Ghostbuster Winston Zeddermore, played by Ernie Hudson, teased a possible reunion with his teammates.
But the announcement comes after “Ghostbusters” star Bill Murray had production on his latest film,...

Back in October 2020, the "Ghostbusters" franchise and Reebok teamed up to release their first sneaker collaboration inspired by the paranormal comedy. Since then, they've released several more stylized shoes inspired by the movies, from the original 1984 flick that started it all to last year's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." Now the past and the present are coming together with Reebok and "Ghostbusters" re-releasing the original Ghost Smasher sneaker, modeled after the Ecto-1, but with an updated design inspired the rusty version of the iconic vehicle from "Afterlife." There's even a bonus glow-in-the-dark touch inspired by the gooey, green ectoplasm that Slimer slings all over the place.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) leads all VOD charts for the third straight week since its price reduction. That’s two weeks longer than its hold on the top spot when it initially was released at $19.99 in early January.
Sony as a studio continues on a roll. This weekend “Uncharted” took in a stronger than expected $44 million in U.S./Canada theaters. Impressive as that was, it also is critical as the highest opening gross for a non-franchise or sequel release in over two years and it comes, like “Afterlife,” from a studio that has no direct streaming platform.
That makes its reliance on traditional strategies – first in theaters, then PVOD at a reduced but still sufficient six week period, later reduced price – before streaming critical. And they seem to be succeeding is the most important recent event in the evolving theater rebound story that is still unsettled.

The legacy of the late Ivan Reitman lives on with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) for which he was the sole producer, repeated at #1 on all VOD charts this week. Its recent reduced price sustained a successful multi-platform run ($200 million theatrical worldwide) for a $75 million production.
The film was directed by his son and reflects a return to box office form for both. Reitman père had more than 20 projects in varying stages of development. “Afterlife” showed he remained vital in comedy, a genre that gets short shrift in theaters today.
VOD charts showed little change this week, including any impact from last Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. “Dune” (Warner Bros./$5.99) rose from last week, taking two #2 slots and placing on all three. The only other films among the top contenders to appear are “King Richard” (Warner Bros./$19.99), which is #7 at Vudu, and “Belfast” (Focus/$19.99), #10 at iTunes.

Updated With Latest, after Sunday 9:31Pm post: After a 51-year directing career, and longer as a producer, Ivan Reitman, the comedy architect behind such classics as the Ghostbusters franchise, Twins, Kindergarten Cop and more, died Saturday night, leaving a deep hole in many hearts.
2021 was quite a year for Reitman: He saw his son Jason Reitman successfully take over the Ghostbusters business with a lot of heart and soul, and plenty of laughs with Ghostbusters: Afterlife which wound up resurrecting the 38-year old series for Columbia Pictures; the movie making close to $200M WW. Ghostbusters spanned four movies, the first one in 1984 taking comedies to a special effects stratosphere, all in grossing $937.8M worldwide to date.

When “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was released this fall, it seemed to be far less controversial than the 2016 reboot “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.” ‘Afterlife’ definitely fits the model of the trendy legacy sequel tropes we’ve been seeing over the past few years by bringing back a ton of nostalgia and fan service while also trying to lay the groundwork for future films. Oh yeah, and it is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of “Ghostbusters” filmmaker Ivan Reitman.

Without any new releases to pose a threat, Disney’s animated musical fable “Encanto” has again notched the No. 1 spot on domestic box office charts.
In its second weekend of release, “Encanto” has collected $12.38 million from 3,980 venues in the U.S. and Canada. That marks a 54% drop from its debut and pushes the film’s two-week total to $57.6 million domestically.
A decline of roughly 50% between its first and second weekend is in line with Disney’s recent Thanksgiving releases, such as 2016’s “Moana” (down 50%), 2017’s “Coco” (down only 45%) 2018’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (down 54%) and 2019’s “Frozen II” (down 59%). Prior Disney animated features were able to conjure stronger starts at the domestic box office, however, those films weren’t playing in theaters during a pandemic. By Covid-19 standards, “Encanto” is faring well at the box office. The family-friendly adventure, which boasts songs by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, will land on...

Fresh off the box office success of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed an overall producing deal with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the team behind the paranormal reboot.
The movie has grossed $115.8 million globally since it opened two weeks ago and helped find a fresh way into a franchise that first launched in 1984. A previous attempt to revive the series in 2016, which found Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones donning proton packs, failed to turn a profit because it cost $144 million to produce. “Afterlife” was made more economically, carrying a $75 million budget.
“Jason is the thing you dream about: a world-class, signature storyteller, visionary filmmaker, and dream producing partner,” said Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group. “Jason and Gil as co-writing partners have a remarkable understanding of commercial quality cinema, and we are thrilled about the upcoming pipeline from these guys.”

Sunday Am Update: Without Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick in the marketplace, the Thanksgiving box office was much lighter than previous holidays, grossing an estimated $141.3M over 5-days, off 46% from 2019’s pre-pandemic holiday over the same period of time. Two family movies, Disney’s animated Encanto, which banked 52% of its $40.3M 5-day gross from Latino and Hispanic audiences, and Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife which delivered $35.3M in its second weekend over Wednesday-Sunday, were the top destinations for families. Worldwide, Encanto hit its global studio projection with a $70M start.

Thanksgiving Box Office: ‘House of Gucci’ and ‘Encanto’ Will Lift Weekend, but Holiday Is Still Lean
There’s money beyond the turkey and stuffing: Fewer weekends are more consistent when it comes to pulling in big box office bucks than the upcoming five-day Thanksgiving period. The start of the late November through early January holiday period is the most lucrative for the box office (outside the summer season), and the Thanksgiving weekend kickoff often ranks among the very best extended weekends of the year.
After a much improved October showing at the multiplex, can we expect the upcoming holiday grosses to come close to a recent rise at the multiplex? Don’t get your hopes up.
New releases “Encanto” (Disney), “House of Gucci” (United Artists), and “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” (Sony) all open wide November 24, and will compete with recent winner “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony). That’s a decent lineup, but it isn’t expected to provide box office at a level close to what the last “normal” Thanksgiving,...

It's finally time for Ghostbusters fans from all generations to grab their proton packs, set their ghost traps, and put on a classic beige jumpsuit because Ghostbusters: Afterlife flew into theaters on Nov. 19! The sci-fi fantasy comedy is the fourth movie in the franchise, but Afterlife arrives as a direct sequel and homage to the original Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989). Although it's set in the present day, Afterlife contains so much '80s nostalgia. Director Jason Reitman, son of the original director Ivan Reitman, continues the franchise and his father's legacy by picking up where he left off and mixing the old cast with the new.
Afterlife follows Dr. Egon Spengler from the original Ghostbusters' daughter and grandchildren, Callie, Trevor, and Phoebe Spengler. Egon left the Spenglers (who have no money) his old farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma, which gives them a chance to start new lives.

Almost 40 years after “Ghostbusters” became a smash hit — one that launched a lucrative franchise spanning film, television and video games — Sony is proving the business of busting ghosts need not be a relic of the past.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the latest big-screen installment in the comedy sci-fi property, collected $44 million in its domestic box office debut, a solid start in unpredictable pandemic times. The drop in ticket sales between its first and second weekend in theaters will be an important indication of audience’s affinity for all things paranormal, but at least for now, positive reviews and a healthy dose of nostalgia appear to be a winning mix for Sony. It’s an important victory for the studio after it failed in 2016 to revive the decades-old series.

Turns out there’s still some life left in those proton packs after all. Following a poorly received, all-female reboot in 2016, Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife slimed the competition at the pre-Thanksgiving box office this weekend, debuting to a much stronger-than-expected $44 million domestic haul. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ Will Smith-led awards-hopeful, King Richard, stumbled out of the gate, bowing in fourth place with an underwhelming $5.7 million as the Joaquin Phoenix heartstring-puller C'mon C'mon soared in limited release.
Thirty-seven years after the first Ghostbusters became the top-grossing film of 1984, the fourth and latest entry in the specter-hunting franchise easily blew past box-office predictions that had it opening in the $27-$35 million range. The PG-13-rated sci-fi comedy directed by Jason Reitman and starring Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and a few old, familiar faces in cameo roles, unspooled in 4,315 locations and earned a $10,196 per-screen average. For the second time in two months, a Sony Pictures sequel confounded projections on opening weekend. Like “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” before it, which bested all other 2021 titles with an initial $90 million return, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” opened to an estimated $44 million; prior estimates ranged from $27 million-$40 million.
Sony, the only top studio to lack a streaming outlet, is having a great last quarter that will be capped by the hotly anticipated “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — a good bet to be the top-grossing release of 2021. Unlike its Disney MCU competitors, “Carnage” and “Afterlife” are veritable bargains; they cost less than $100 million each.
With these franchise installments, Sony seems to have found a sweet spot. “Afterlife” rebounded from the perceived failure of its 2016 female-reworking predecessor The problem lay in its $144 million budget, nearly double that of “Afterlife.”

After many a pandemic delay (precisely four times), Jason Reitman’s entrance into the “Ghostbusters” universe is here with “Afterlife.” The film has so far scared up an impressive box office to the tune of $44 million-plus. It’s the fourth film in the franchise, but it also serves as a direct sequel to “Ghostbusters II,” directed by Jason’s father Ivan. Set 32 years after the events of the second film, the movie centers on a single mother and her two children who move to a small town in Oklahoma, where they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and their grandfather’s secret legacy.
Of course, the metric of any film’s success these days is whether or not a sequel can be greenlit — and according to a cagey but slightly revealing Reitman in a recent interview with Uproxx, a follow-up is most likely already in the works.

Someone at Sony today could quite possibly be ringing a bell and shouting, “We got one!” because Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s opening weekend suggests there’s life in the old franchise yet. Indeed, the fourth movie about ghosts and the people who catch them, and third picture set in the original 1984 movie’s continuity, has beaten both Sony and competitors’ expectations, and looks poised to open at a respectable $44 million.
That estimated number comes in well above Sony’s lowball projections for the weekend, with the studio forecasting their pseudo-reboot of a reboot to open between $27 million and $28 million. It also exceeds what third party prognosticators pegged the film’s prospects at, with general projections landing around $30 to $35 million. And despite opening perhaps less forcefully than the studio might’ve hoped when the film was originally greenlit before the pandemic—Ghostbusters: Afterlife was initially supposed to release in summer 2020—the unexpectedly...

The box office ain’t afraid of no ghosts.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” a sequel to the 1980s sci-fi comedy classic, opened at No. 1 in North America, collecting a solid $44 million from 4,315 venues. The better-than-expected result is an encouraging sign that family audiences are willing to visit their local multiplex, provided there’s something broadly entertaining to be found there. During the pandemic, parents with young kids haven’t been the most active ticket buyers, but that could change now that Covid-19 vaccines have been deemed safe for children. However, adult-skewing dramas like “King Richard,” which fizzled in its box office debut, continue to struggle.
Internationally, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” earned $16 million from 31 overseas markets, pushing its worldwide total to $60 million. Directed by Jason Reitman, the latest installment in the supernatural series is shaping up to be a win for the studio after it failed to revive the franchise years earlier. It should be...

Sunday Am Update: Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife turned in a $16.1M Saturday, which is very close to the amount of cash that Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters grossed on its second day of release, all of this amounting to a $44M opening weekend. That’s great, and the sequel blew up in the heartland, which is a great indicator of families coming out in the holiday week ahead, especially with its dynamite audience exits.
Comscore reports that 41% K-12 schools are off tomorrow and 16% colleges. That grows to 80% K-12 and 61% college on break by Wednesday, before both are 100% off Thursday and Friday. While the debut for the Jason Reitman edition is slightly lighter than Feig’s, which saw a domestic start of $46M; that’s really nothing to wince about.
.Meanwhile, the second wide release of the weekend, Warner Bros.’ Will Smith movie King Richard, was far from a grand slam with $5.7M.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is the front runner at the domestic box office, as the comedy sequel is headed towards a $40.5 million haul for the weekend.
After earning $4.5 million in Thursday previews, “Afterlife” was originally projected to draw a three-day total of $27 million to $30 million, a figure that the film is now outperforming. The Sony Pictures release grossed $16.5 million from 4,315 locations on Friday.
Sony has positioned the comedy sequel for continuous play over the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday next weekend, betting on great word-of-mouth to earn ticket sales from families of men, women and children. During the pandemic era, young adults have been the primary audience to show interest in returning to theaters, while family and adult-oriented films have failed to draw big numbers more often that not. How “Afterlife” holds over the next few weeks remains up in the air, though its “A-” CinemaScore is certainly an encouraging sign of enthusiasm from audiences.

“Hey flattop!” It’s a line we haven’t heard Bill Murray utter for nearly 40 years. Nevertheless, you could physically sense the waves of nostalgia it triggered throughout the audience of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife premiere earlier this week when those words were shouted again. Moments before it looked like Gozer—the Destructor Herself (or Himself. Gozer is whatever Gozer wants to be!)—had won.
She’d returned from a parallel dimension and had totally defeated the plan of young Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) to capture her essence in the giant ghost trap that Old Man Egon Spengler built beneath his farm. Instead the trap failed to go off, and poor Lucky (Celeste O’Connor) got possessed by one of the Zuul spirits, turning into a dog. All hope thus seemed lost. The 2016 all-female reboot of Ghostbusters was both a critical and commercial flop, so now it’s time to let the kids have a go. That seems to be the thinking behind this new sequel-slash-reboot from director Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, who’s on board here as producer, casting a protective eye over the film’s legacy.
Set in the present day, the film begins with put-upon Callie (Carrie Coon) moving to smalltown Summerville, Oklahoma with her two children – 15 year-old Trevor (Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard) and 12 year-old science whizz Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) – after inheriting her estranged father’s “dirt farm”.

The last moments of Ghostbusters: Afterlife feel as much like a new beginning as a final farewell. The closing scenes of Jason Reitman’s love letter to his father’s work bring the curtain down with a sense of finality on multiple elements. This is definitely the last we’ll see of Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler, who is brought back by digital magic as a kind-hearted ghost. One also gets the suspicion that Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman is making his goodbyes too with the respectful nod to Spengler and a revealed happily ever after with Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett.
However, just as the film closes the book on these aspects from the 1984 picture, it also seems to be opening the door for many others: young Phoebe Spengler (Mckenna Grace) is only just beginning to claim her ghostbusting birthright by strapping on the proton pack.

The Ghostbusters are back this weekend in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, opening in 4,300 theaters including IMAX and other large screens. It is the fourth film in Sony’s franchise and a direct sequel to the first two films, disregarding the 2016 reboot. Afterlife is a family affair, being written and directed by Jason Reitman, whose father Ivan Reitman directed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II and is producing Afterlife. Even the story keeps it the family, focusing on the grandchildren of O.G. ghostbuster Egon Spengler, who was played in the original films by the late Harold Ramis. The cast is headlined by Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard ("Stranger Things"), Carrie Coon, and Mckenna Grace, but the real treat for fans is the return of the old gang as the film brings back Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts.

Way back in the before times of 2019 — pre-pandemic, but after the world was already experiencing real Old Testament-type stuff, like human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria, Trump — readers may have come across a news item. There was a new Ghostbusters movie on the way. I mean, there already had been a new Ghostbusters movie, which tried to channel the classic 1980s blockbuster’s spirit while giving things a fresh spin via an all-female gang of paranormal investigators. That idea was inspired; the end result, not so much.

Can you pour so much authentic love, tenderness, and warmth into a tribute with your heart in the right place and still get it all wrong? And to that end of questions, is it possible to apply the “wrong” genre to a beloved genre franchise? Well, for the former, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” certainly makes the case for a cautionary tale about overwrought affections. Because the new film by director Jason Reitman—the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the original 1984 comedy— is undoubtedly a well-meaning love letter to “Ghostbusters,” and the late Harold Ramis, in particular, but its well-intentioned embrace is too reverent and eventually turns mawkish, even awkward and embarrassing in the final act.

Sony’s supernatural comedy sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is aiming to generate $30 million from 4,300 theaters in its domestic box office debut.
The final weekend figure could vary slightly, with the studio predicting a three-day tally near $28 million and independent tracking services estimating a start closer to $35 million. In any case, the PG-13 “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is eyeing a first-place finish on domestic box office charts. In terms of new nationwide releases, its only competition is the Warner Bros. sports drama “King Richard,” starring Will Smith as the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. That film is projected to collect $8 million to $10 million from 3,250 cinemas while playing simultaneously on HBO Max.

A “Ghostbusters” reunion took over NBC’s late night programming on Monday.
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson appeared together on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” ahead of the release of the upcoming sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” The group is also set to appear on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
The three actors starred together in the original ’80s duology of “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II,” playing the eponymous crew of phantom-capturing parapsychologists alongside the late Harold Ramis. Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson also played smaller roles in Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the property.
During their late night appearance, the trio spoke at length about their experience making the original films together and what it meant to pass the torch to a younger generation of Ghostbusters.

Who you gonna call to tell them that Ghostbusters: Afterlife could already be getting a sequel? The movie hits theaters on Nov. 19, and there's already buzz about whether or not there could be another installment of the franchise. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the sequel to Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989) and is the fourth film overall in the franchise. Could there be a fifth movie? Here's what we know.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife combines the old cast with the new and takes place 30 year after the second film, in which a single mother and her children move to Oklahoma. There, they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters, and their grandfather's legacy. Ghostbusters veteran Ernie Hudson, who plays Winston Zeddemore, said in an interview with Good Day Chicago that he heard the studio is already planning a script for a sequel to Afterlife. "If they threw [a sequel] at me, I'd be honored to do it.

"I'm calling about what happened in New York." Wait, who you gunna call? Sony Pictures has launched one final trailer for Jason Reitman's exciting Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie, the continuation of the original Ghostbusters series. (We also posted a full trailer + featurette + international trailer recently.) Afterlife is a direct sequel to the first two movies (from 1984 & 1989) and brings back the classic Ecto-1 and some of the original actors. It's set in a small town, where a group of kids and a teacher discover various connections to the original 'busters from 30 years ago. The main cast includes Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd; with Bill Murray, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Bokeem Woodbine, and Ernie Hudson. This is the best trailer yet because it's short and sweet, doesn't giveaway anything big, but also makes me really want to watch this! We always knew they'd get all the old guys back.

In the lead-up to releasing “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Sony has played it fairly tight-lipped about what exactly this movie might be: Is it a prequel, a sequel or some kind of spinoff? Pretty much any discussion of the answer will come as a spoiler to those who like surprises, so be warned that this review is not intended as a marketing tool for the studio (those seeking coy teasers are better off watching the trailers), but as a critique of what this unnecessary but enjoyable movie actually delivers.
The good news for “Ghostbusters” fans is that “Afterlife” does nothing to tarnish what has come before, overseen as it is by Jason Reitman, carrying on the legacy of his father (and “Ghostbusters” director) Ivan, who played an important behind-the-scenes role in shaping this 21st-century update. The franchise has made the family rich, spawning a sequel, an animated series, a comic book line and an ill-fated 2016 reboot.

"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" is passing the directorial torch from original "Ghostbusters" franchise director Ivan Reitman to his accomplished filmmaker son Jason Reitman. Even though Jason Reitman is at the helm of the film, he still had to work closely with his father. Not only was Ivan Reitman producing the movie, but he was an important part of making sure that the familiar elements of "Ghostbusters" were...
