Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see this one – written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

“Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language musical drama starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, has earned the biggest standing ovation of this year’s Cannes Film Festival so far.
Gomez wiped away tears as the Palais clapped for a full nine minutes, accompanied by plenty of hooting, whistling and cheering. During the standing ovation, director Jacques Audiard waved his hat at the balcony as stars Saldaña and Édgar Ramírez shared an emotional hug. There was huge applause for Gascón, who stars in the film as a drug cartel leader who seeks gender-affirming surgery.
In the film, from Palme d’Or winner Audiard, Saldaña stars as Rita, an “overqualified and undervalued” lawyer, whose firm is more inclined to help criminals than seek justice. She finds an unexpected way out when a feared drug cartel leader Manitas (Gascón) recruits her to aid him in surreptitiously completing a sex change operation to...

Netflix has just released their lists of what films and TV shows we will see added in February…and what films and TV shows will vanish.
First, the good news: quite a few classic and popular TV shows are making the grade on the streaming service, including the first five seasons of Mash, Hawaii 5-0, and the new season of House of Cards. New additions to the film list include RoboCop, The Brothers Bloom, and Gimme Shelter. While there’s not a lot of quality stuff on offer, there are at least a few new films and TV shows that we can enjoy on the Netflix streaming service.
Now for the bad news: quite a number of favorites are going to vanish from Netflix come February 1. Among these are several James Bond films, Zodiac, Jane Eyre, and Dredd. The TV shows fare even worse, with tons of BBC shows expiring,...

Q: So did all cast members get their make-up done together?
A: No, we didn’t; we had separate bungalows. It was only when we were all on set, all grey or green or blue and we couldn’t touch anything because we would just smear paint and stuff all over everything. We’d all sit together and Dave would be eating a super-healthy meal, I’d be having some fish and chips and Chris would be asking me: ‘So how’s the texture? Do you like the fish?’ He couldn’t eat it himself because he was on a strict diet so he was always asking me what my food tasted like.
Q: How did you while away the long hours in the make-up chair?
A: Listening to music, talking… Sometimes I’d ask about Dave and was told, ‘This dude is meditating – he sits there and doesn’t...

Marion Cotillard has had what can only be described as a remarkable seven years. Truly. Since winning the Best Actress Oscar for her breakthrough performance in "La Vie en Rose" she's starred in Woody Allen's best film this century ("Midnight in Paris"), Christopher Nolan's Best Picture nominee ("Inception"), worked with Michael Mann ("Public Enemies"), smartly joined a Steven Soderbergh ensemble ("Contagion"), headlined a massive French-language hit ("Little White Lies"), was already robbed of a second Best Actress Oscar nomination ("Rust and Bone") and was the center of an acclaimed drama already well on its way to cinephile cult film status ("The Immigrant"). Throw in one flick for her life partner ("Blood Ties"), a paycheck too hard to turn down ("The Dark Knight Rise") and a musical that just didn't work ("Nine") and Cotillard is already well on her way to living legend status. Now, get ready to add "Two Days,...

Prolific, and often under-appreciated Hong Kong director Herman Yau returns to the category III rated horror of “The Untold Story” and “Ebola Syndrome” with “The Second Coming”, dealing with possession, murder and dark secrets from the past. A joint Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore production, the film was co-directed and scripted by Ng Tin-chi, and stars Kenny Wong (recently in “Firestorm”), Tvb and Milkyway veteran Maggie Shiu, Don Li (“The Haunted School”) and young Singaporean actress Joey Leong (also in the excellent “Blood Ties”). For a modestly budgeted genre outing the film performed surprisingly well at the international box office and on the festival circuit, and has been picked up for release in a variety of countries, its popularity perhaps having been boosted by being shot in 3D. Kenny Wong and Maggie Shiu play former migrant worker couple Ming and Jen, who have made good with their lives and who now lead a comfortable,...

Enemy What would make this a more interesting release would be an audio commentary, but there isn't one. As interesting as this film is and as likely as I am to watch it again, in this day and age, if you aren't going to give me any added incentive to buy a DVD/Blu-ray that I'm only likely to watch once or twice ever again... why would I buy itc
Blood Ties I did not enjoy this movie when I saw it in Cannes last year, but it has been edited down since, by about 15 minutes or so I believe, which could make it a more interesting watch as it was a film that either needed to be about 15 minutes shorter or two hours longer. You can read my original review right here, though do know the movie I reviewed is not the one on this disc.

Exclusive: First title to be released under the deal is The Double.
Cairo-based distribution and marketing outfit Mad Solutions has signed an output deal with Front Row Filmed Entertainment to handle the regional distributor’s films in Egypt.
The first title to be released under the deal is Richard Ayoade’s The Double, which is scheduled for release by the end of May. Other upcoming titles include The Wind Rises, Dom Hemingway, Blood Ties and Welcome To The Jungle.
Egypt has seen box office decline due to political turmoil and limits foreign releases to 10 screens. But Mad co-founder Alaa Karkouti said the market still has potential if films are handled in the right way.
“It’s a case of not just throwing films in cinemas any more but about carefully positioning each title,” said Karkouti.

I realize that the surplus of questionable characters (I can't say villains, as the jury is still out on at least a few of them) paired with the relentless pace of "Orphan Black"'s second season thus far has some fans feeling shellshocked. It's been a lot to digest, I'll admit. Still, I hope everyone is keeping their Clone Club membership. I can't make any guarantees, but I feel confident that what seems convoluted to some of us now will unravel satisfyingly as the season progresses. And hey, there's reason to celebrate, isn't there? While this episode still leaves us with more questions than answers, one of those answers is the identity of Kira's dad. That's something, right? Felix, Kira and Sarah are on the run, trying to put miles between themselves and, well, all the many people who are after them. While this makeshift family is stealing from convenience stores and breaking into cottages,...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Even though I'm not much of a fan, I'll start with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as it has to be the hottest title on the board this week. However, fan or not, I'm not sure why you'd buy this version as you know an extended version is just around the corner and, on top of that, why not just wait until Warner Home Video releases the massive, Hobbit and Lord of the Rings box set we all know is going to be release eventuallyc Likely with the extended additions, new features and cool packaging that will likely take up less shelf space than the six titles individually. I'm just saying, think before you click "Buy".

Atlantis returns after a week's break - apparently there was some other family show on last Saturday - and absence has certainly made the heart grow fonder for Hercules (Mark Addy) and Medusa (Jemima Rooper).
Yes, it's looking like Hercules's unrequited love is about to be requited... until the apple of his eye is kidnapped by cruel moneylender Kyros (Anton Lesser).
To get her back, Kyros assigns Hercules one task - he, Jason (Jack Donnelly) and Pythagoras (Robert Emms) must retrieve a precious and powerful artefact... from the underworld kingdom of Hades. Simple, right?
Atlantis continues on Saturday (November 30) at 8.15pm on BBC One.

TV Horror:Investigating the Dark Side of the Small Screen
by Lorna Jowett and Stacey Abbott
I.B. Taurus
270 pages
Paperback
Isbn: 978148856189
By Adrian Smith
Television can easily be dismissed as being an unsuitable medium for the horror genre, having to please the moral majority and unable to be as red in tooth and claw as those horrific offerings on the silver screen. Jowett and Abbott's new book does its best to prove this argument wrong, demonstrating that in many ways television has been able to explore the darker recesses of horror in far more depth than can be done in a single two hour movie. Shows such as The Twilight Zone and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have embraced the limitations of the small screen to present some truly chilling, unsettling moments. Long-running shows like The X-Files were able to have story arcs that lasted several seasons, building complex characters and even more complicated plots.

Zap2it: Do you like building a back story for your character?
Dylan Neal: With television, what is different from doing a film is you really do fill in details, because there is no sequel. With a television show a lot of holes are left intentionally blank because you don't know where you are going to go. The actors, showrunners, and writers room are all on a journey. You think you are going left and then you go right. It is Ok to not have all of the pieces in place when you start. It's a journey.
Zap2it: Did you read Debbie Macomber's books?
Dylan Neal: Once a book becomes a film or TV series, I am not beholden to the author. I am beholden to the screenwriter or showrunner. I purposely didn't read the books. I hear things about the novels, and know we are losing by following it.

Yesterday I posted my final two reviews from the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and I'm ready to put a bow on this year's fest and call it complete. However, not before I say a few thank yous and talk a little about the fest overall. First and foremost, I want to thank the readers and all of those that contributed and helped fund my trip. The above graphic represents the first names of the 83 people that contributed and helped me pay for this year's trip. Without your contributions I could not have gone this year. I am indebted to you and I hope you feel my coverage of the festival warranted your contribution. This article will represent my 75th post specifically related to this year's festival, the first being the February 27 announcement that Steven Spielberg would head this year's jury. And of those 75 posts, 22 were reviews, each of which I've listed...

There are so many secondary plot threads and a multitude of characters in Blood Ties the film finds itself sputtering along, stopping and starting every 5-10 minutes as characters are introduced and re-introduced. There's absolutely no way for the story to work within the confines of a two-and-a-half-hour movie as it either needs to be cut down to two hours or less or extended into a five-to-six-hour miniseries or more. It's a shame, really, because there are some fantastic moments within this film just as much as there are some moments and casting decisions I really could have done without, but all-in-all the end result is a bit of a mess. Adapted by director Guillame Canet and co-writer James Gray, the film is based on Jacques Maillot's 2008 French film Rivals (Les liens du sang). Set in New York, 1974, the story largely follows two brothers; Frank (Billy Crudup) a police...

Cannes, France — The magic and glamour of Cannes can be hard to spot on a day when rain is lashing the palm trees, roiling the gray Mediterranean and pooling in puddles along the Croisette.
But the world's leading film festival can transform careers – something no one knows that better than actors Berenice Bejo and Tahar Rahim, stars of director Asghar Farhadi's festival entry "The Past."
Bejo shimmered on-screen in Cannes two years ago in "The Artist," her director husband Michel Hazanavicius' vivacious silent homage to Hollywood's Golden Age. It went on to win five Academy Awards, including best picture.
Rahim was the breakout star of the 2009 festival in Jacques Audiard's poetic and brutal prison drama "A Prophet," as a youth growing to manhood behind bars.
Cannes exposure helped boost both performers onto the international stage. While once most European actors could choose between stay at home and playing Hollywood villains,...

Blood Ties: An Elegant, Yet Familiar New Film from Koreeda
Children switched at birth and discovered years after the error is the well-worn melodramatic scenario that master filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda manages to make potentially one of the most elegantly simplistic entries into said familiar territory with his latest film, Like Father, Like Son. A scenario generously used throughout the history of cinema (and more recent titles like The Other Son and Midnight’s Children come to mind), Koreeda deftly examines a quietly moving nature vs. nurture sequence of events that manages to be generously moving despite feeling familiar when compared to other entries within Koreeda’s impressive oeuvre.
Beginning with his preschool entrance exam, we are introduced to six year old Keita (Keita Ninomiya), who is being interviewed by a panel of adults concerning his family background. We quickly pick up on the fact that Keita and his parents,...

Exclusive: John Lesher‘s Le Grisbi Productions is teamed with Dcm Productions on The Kings Of Rome, a script that will be written by Don MacPherson. The writer penned the upcoming BBC mini Fleming, detailing the exploits of James Bond creator Ian Fleming during WWII. The drama is about an American investigator sent to Rome to collect a debt. There, he gets sucked into a Dantean underworld of corruption, sex and murder that reaches to the highest echelons of the Vatican. It’s the second pic Lesher is doing with Dcm; they are teamed on Harmony Korine’s untitled followup to Spring Breakers. Dcm is a Berlin-based production company which co-financed and produced the Dustin Hoffman-directed Quartet, and the Best Foreign Language nominee Kon-Tiki. Lesher’s currently in New York shooting the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed comedy Birdman, and the Guillaume Canet-directed Blood Ties, which is premiering here in Cannes.

The line-up for the Cannes Film Festival this year is pretty incredible. It includes Inside Llewyn Davis, Only God Forgives, The Congress, The Bling Ring, As I Lay Dying, Blood Ties, All Is Lost, and Nebraska, the new film from Alexander Payne (The Descendants, Election). The plot centers on an aging alcoholic (Bruce Dern) who convinces his estranged son (Will Forte) to take a road trip from Montana to Nebraska to collect what he believes to be a million dollar Publisher’s Clearing House prize. The first clip from the film has been released online and it features another veteran actor, Stacy Keach. The film premieres Thursday, May 23, but if you can’t make it down to the festival, Paramount Vantage plans to release it in theatres on November 22. Watch the clip below.

With the Star Wars movie machine set to rumble on for another generation now that the third trilogy, not to mention an undisclosed number of standalone films, have become a reality we’re about to have a plethora of new characters introduced into the stupendously massive mythology.
For an original generation Star Wars kid like myself though, who saw the first (or classic as it’s now known) trilogy as they were released, and who despite really wanting to love the prequel films found them difficult to warm to, there’s a very specific and relatively limited period of time that I’m interested in. Essentially, anything written within the lifetimes of the characters that I fell in love with in the original movies is what floats my boat.

There are many things that I love about the Star Wars universe, but if I had to pick just one then without a shadow of a doubt it would be Boba Fett. Since he first appeared on the bridge of the Super Star Destroyer Executor in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), he has, hands down, been my favourite character. Not even having a pint-sized, mop-haired version of him shoehorned into the Prequel Trilogy for no apparent reason other than to shift more toys was able to shake my faith in or dampen my enthusiasm for all things Fett.
In the intervening years, the mythology of the galaxy’s most notorious bounty hunter has exploded at an incredible rate, along with everything else in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, to the point where keeping up would be a full-time job. As a result I haven’t even begun to read everything that’s been written about Fett,...

Our friend and one of our favorite actresses, Marion Cotillard, is on her way to be nominated for “Best Actress” for her performance in “Rust and Bone.” This coming January 10th the Academy Awards will announce the nominees for the Oscars. We strongly believe that Marion will be one of them. Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard is internationally renowned for her unbridled commitment to her art, challenging herself with each new role. Cotillard is starring in Jacques Audiard’s “Rust and Bone,” alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Bouli Lanners and Céline Sallette. The film was co-written by Jacques Audiard and Thomas Bidegain and adapted from the acclaimed book of short stories by Craig Davidson. Cotillard recently wrapped production on director and co-writer James Gray’s “Untitled James Gray Project,” starring opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner. The film focuses on ‘Ewa Cybulska,’ (Cotillard) and her sister, ‘Magda,’ who sail to Ellis Island in the early twentieth century,...

The actor, famed for his obsessive approach, has met his match in Dickens, playing Magwitch in Great Expectations and directing and starring in a film about the author. And then there was the time he could have played Bond …
Ralph Fiennes could have been a diplomat in a previous life – the low, patrician voice, and the clothes. He is dressed on the morning we meet with an elegance that would not disgrace a Frenchman: neat cardigan, fresh shirt, polished boots. We are in Soho, in post-production offices – an editing suite like a gone-wrong sitting room, with a bank of computers at right angles to a sofa.
He is, by a month, on the youthful side of 50. And he has a smile of such disarming sweetness that the first impression is that something has gone bizarrely wrong. It is only retrospectively that the oddity makes sense: what he does best as an actor is torment.

The charismatic star of Rust and Bone is Belgium's hottest acting talent, making his name playing the coldest of villains
Marion Cotillard, the Oscar-winning French actor, has perfect recall of the first time she met Matthias Schoenaerts: "I was like, Wow. Wowww! What is that?" Now I'm sitting opposite the 34-year-old from Antwerp, it's clear why she was so awed. He's almost 6ft 2in, clear-eyed, and if you were told he was Ryan Gosling's rougher, tougher elder brother, you'd believe it. He looks sent from casting heaven to dominate Hollywood movies for the next decade. Or, as Cotillard went on, "Amazing actor, super sexy, charismatic … a real man."
If you were only familiar with the Belgian from his work on screen, then this effusive description might be confusing. His calling card to date has been brutish, unlovable outsiders with varying personality disorders. He gained 30 kgs of hard-pack muscle...

Surprises have been popping up all over the 50th annual New York Film Festival. Perhaps because it's celebrating an important semi-centennial milestone and its beloved chairman Richard Peña is stepping down after 25 years, Nyff is pulling in several riches this year. There's a surprise secret screening on Monday (which could be Fox Searchlight's "Hitchcock" if our guess work is right) and last night a small teaser was unveiled of a highly anticipated 2013 film: Park Chan-Wook's "Stoker." At the conclusion of the gala tribute to Academy-Award winner Nicole Kidman (her latest, "The Paperboy" screened afterwards), Pena and Nyff revealed a small teaser taste of "Stoker," a Southern-gothic thriller from the director of "Oldboy," starring Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode. A picture that could ostensibly go under the title "Blood Ties," or something like "Family Bonds,"...

We've got some fun news for DC Comics fans! "Arrow" is adding some characters who will be very familiar to fans of the Justice League. In an upcoming episode, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) will tangle with the Royal Flush Gang.
Zap2it has exclusively learned that Kyle Schmid, best known for his work on "Being Human" and "Blood Ties," has been cast as Kyle Reston or "Ace."
The Royal Flush Gang, of course, is a band of card-playing villains, which will first appear in episode 106, titled "Legacies." Details are being kept under wraps, but sources say that we'll see a major bank robbery, with a crowd of hostages eventually leaving the building... wearing playing card masks.
Schmid can currently be seen on "Copper" as Robert Morehouse, a wealthy friend of the titular police officer in Civil War-era New York City. (He's also one of Zap2it's Ones to Watch for Fall 2012.)

From outside, a war-torn looking warehouse located on the outskirts of Toronto hardly looks special at all. But once you step inside, you can see that BBC America has obviously gone to great lengths to recreate 1860s New York City for its period drama, "Copper." The hard cement floors have been transformed into a dirty cobblestone road. A hardware store, a tavern with a freestanding bar and the 6th Precinct Metropolitan Police Station are just a few of the buildings that crowd the street. Make a sharp right and you're into a more affluent district of large houses and mansions.
Created by Tom Fontana ("Oz," "Homicide: Life on the Street") and Will Rokos ("Southland") "Copper" follows Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), an Irish-immigrant cop doing his best to keep the peace in the rough Five Points neighborhood while seeking answers to a case that's hit too close to home.

An Oscar nomination will open up some doors, and for Michael Roskam and Matthias Schoenaerts, director and star of Best Foreign Film contender "Bullhead," that's starting to happen. Schoenaerts has lined up an intriguing slate of films including another great performance in Jacques Audiard's upcoming "Rust And Bone," along with roles in Guillaume Canet's English language debut "Blood Ties," the thriller "In Treatment" and uh, "Loft." And now, Roskam is looking to add a bit of shine to his resume. Following the path of so many filmmakers these days, the director is now headed to HBO where he'll write and direct the pilot for "Buda Bridge." The show will be set in the near feature in Brussells, and is a crime drama that will kick off when a woman is found dead on the titular landmark, leading to crime, mayhem and a bit of sci-fi, apparently. All intriguing stuff,...
