Will Packer does not make films for Hollywood. Though his career has spanned 30 years, and his movies have collectively grossed over $1 billion at the box office, the prolific producer learned this powerful lesson early on.

“When I made that very first movie, ‘Chocolate City,’ I invited all of Hollywood to come to our world premiere,” he told Variety during a sit-down conversation at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff), where the series premiered. “This is how audacious we were: I did a black-tie premiere in Tallahassee, Florida, on the campus of Florida A&m University (Famu) in the Lee Hall Student Auditorium.”

The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Alonso is perhaps best known for starring on the hit Amazon series The Boys, centering on vigilantes’ efforts to take down a group of corrupt superheroes, which returns for its fourth season this year. On the show developed by Eric Kripke from the same-name comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the actor portrays the vigilante Mother’s Milk, sharing the screen with Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty and more.

Regina Hall came down with pneumonia while shooting Girls Trip, the irreverent 2017 comedy from Will Packer, a savant who repeatedly has shown an obdurate Hollywood that Black movies can mint money at the box office. Hall recalls Packer’s superpower: persuading anyone, be they filmmakers, studio execs or, in this case, his star, to do what needs to be done. “I came to work, they tested me, and I had a fever. Will said he would rearrange the entire schedule so we could shoot my part first: ‘If you can just get through this scene for me, you won’t have to do anything else,’ ” she says. “I did get through it, and he made sure I had everything I needed to heal.”

After making more than $1.4 billion at the box office, producer Will Packer has gotten into the streaming game with “Praise This.”

The Peacock original marks Packer’s first time producing a movie that wasn’t destined for cinemas. While the new distribution plan might seem like a reaction to the hit or miss theatrical business — or the kind of pivot that would happen after a box office bomb, which Packer has yet to suffer, by the way — that’s not what’s behind the change in strategy.

Lyricist and composer Paul Williams will be honored by the 13th annual Guild of Music Supervisors awards with the 2023 Icon award at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on March 5. The awards show will also be posthumously honoring former Sony Pictures Entertainment senior VP and music supervisor, Pilar McCurry.

Williams’ standards have been recorded by such decorated artists as Ray Charles, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, the Carpenters, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross and Willie Nelson, among others. He’s previously been recognized with six Oscars, nine Grammys, six Golden Globes, and two Emmy nominations.

We’ve all had trouble sleeping, haven’t we? Thoughts that consume our minds and invade our dreams that we can’t shift…well, unfortunately for Robert Adetuyi’s latest feature film, you won’t have trouble sleeping whilst watching. The ‘Stomp the Yard’ and ‘Honey: Rise up and Dance’ director fails to deliver here; resulting in a distinctively average thriller come dark comedy that certainly won’t plague your mind and keep you up at night.

Curiously somber piano music emerges, setting the tone immediately – especially when we see Billy Zane’s Charles enter the scene. Despite his soothing tones, and romantic demeanor something is awry. The lighting shifts, there is blood down one side of his face and an intimate moment between a seemingly happily married couple quickly turns into something sinister. The clichéd, it-was-all-a-nightmare tangent invades the deliberately disorientating scene wherein we are given the backstory in a somewhat patronising manner.

Will Packer Productions has tapped Leon Chills to adapt Stan Parish’s “Love and Theft” into a new movie for Universal Pictures.

Based on Parish’s novel, which was published in 2020 by Penguin Random House through its imprint at Knopf Doubleday, “Love and Theft” is a global romantic heist film set in Las Vegas, Mexico, and Spain.

Chills has previously written episodes for Netflix’s “Spinning Out” and Amazon’s “The Wilds,” where he was a story editor. On the feature side, Chills’ first spec sale was “Shadow Force,” an action drama sold to Lionsgate.

Packer and Johanna Byer will produce the movie, while Alvie Hurtado will oversee the production for Wpp. Lexi Barta, Universal Pictures’ vice president of production development, will oversee on behalf of the studio.

Will Packer has been named Producer of the 94th Annual Academy Awards, set for March 27.

This will be the first Oscar show to be produced by Packer, a prolific producer of numerous films and TV projects including Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along, Girls Trip, the Think Like a Man films and the television remake of Roots, for which he received an Emmy nomination. But his credits do not include a lot of live TV projects, so taking on the Oscars will be a relatively new experience. His wide-ranging credits in comedy give hope that he also will be creating a fun Academy Awards.

The Academy clearly is looking for fresh ideas and new directions after the pandemic-affected, critically derided and record-low-rated 2021 telecast produced by the trio of Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins. In the new role, Hurtado is responsible for identifying content, filmmakers and talent for feature film development and production. He reports directly to Johanna Byer, Will Packer Prods.’ (Wpp) executive vice president of motion pictures.

“Alvie is an integral part of our film team,” producer and founder Will Packer said, announcing Hurtado’s promotion. “As we embark upon a rousing new chapter at Wpp he will be essential to our short and long term goals.”

Hurtado joined Wpp in 2017 as an assistant to the president of film and was upped to creative executive in 2020. When Bosch first premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2014, the streaming world was in a very different place. Netflix had only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black under its belt. Hulu was still a joint venture owned by multiple conglomerates. Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock didn’t even exist. Now, in June 2021, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases is highlighted by one last outing for LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.

Bosch season 7 premieres on June 25. This will be the last batch of episodes for the series, before a spinoff gets rolling for IMDb TV. For those who are not caught up on the sprawling procedural, Amazon has some other original TV series this month as well. Brazilian crime drama Dom premieres on June 4. Exclusive: Director Rob Hardy is cranking up the power with a new first-look deal with Lionsgate and Power creator Courtney Kemp’s End of Episode Productions.

“Rob is a brilliant director and a tremendous creative force,” Kemp told Deadline. “It is my great pleasure to have the opportunity to continue our collaboration, and I look forward to a bright future together bringing more series to the screen, with Bipoc representation both on camera and behind the scenes,” the Power Book II: Ghost showrunner and EP added.

Netflix is to open an office in Bogota, Colombia, this year, the streamer has announced.

The studio said today that through 2022, it will have more than 30 new projects which include the already announced Ritmo Salvaje, Locombianos, Juanpis, Nada Es Igual, a comedy show starring Alejandra Azcárate, Goles en Contra, Pálpito, Perfil Falso, Diomedes and Chichipatos Season 2.

Netflix also stated today that it has invested more than $175M dollars in local content since 2014 through this year.

Previous Colombian projects backed by Netflix include Siempre Bruja, Distrito Salvaje, Chichipatos, Frontera Verde and El Robo del Siglo; comedy specials such as those of Liss Pereira, Ricardo Quevedo, Antonio Sanint, Julian Arango and Alejandro Riaño, and movies such as Lavaperros.

The news was announced in a blog post by Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Latin America, Francisco Ramos.

Will Packer Productions (Wpp) and writer Felicia Pride are teaming up for a new romantic drama, set in the world of collegiate track and field.

The project, titled “Like It’s the Last,” comes from an original idea from Pride, who will also write the script.

Will Packer will produce the film on behalf of his eponymous production company alongside Wpp motion picture president James Lopez. The new film marks the second teaming between the trio, who also have the erotic drama “Deeper” in development with Universal.

Pride and Wpp’s Johanna Byer will serve as executive producers.

Packer’s production company has a long history of mainstream theatrical success, with a box office haul of more than $1 billion dollars. Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins will be sleuthing his way back to the screen. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television has closed a deal to develop and produce a television series adapted from Walter Mosley’s bestselling gritty historical fiction mystery series starring Rawlins, one of literature’s most popular Black investigators.

The drama, based on Mosley’s fifteen novels and collection of short stories centered on the WWII army veteran turned hard-boiled private eye, will be set in 1950’s Los Angeles. Per the logline, the show will honor the great traditions of storytelling in the detective genre, while also exploring the racial inequities and social injustice experienced by Bipoc and other non-white people.

The International Olympic Committee has decided to take breakdancing out for a spin with its upcoming Paris 2024 games.

The Olympics announced on Monday that the competitive dance form will be among the new sports set to debut during the 2024 games. The Olympics website states that breakdancing (named “breaking”), skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will be new categories for the next summer Olympics.

While the announcement surely brought on a range of reactions, from excitement to confusion, it wasn’t the only Olympics-related news to gain attention. The Olympics also announced that the Paris 2024 games will feature a historic 100% gender equality in its athlete quotas. There will be exactly 50% female and male participation in the next installment of summer events, surpassing that of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In addition to new events and gender equality milestones, the Ioc announced that the Paris games will feature about 500 fewer athletes and 10 fewer events.

Idris Elba will star in the survival thriller “Beast” for Universal Pictures with Baltasar Kormakur directing and producing.

Universal is keeping the story line under wraps. “Rampage” writer Ryan Engle wrote the script, based on an idea from Jaime Primak-Sullivan.

Will Packer Productions has hired Johanna Byer as executive VP of motion pictures.

For the past four years, Byer has served as senior VP of film and television for French film studio Gaumont. Prior to that role, she was the VP of development at Working Title Films, where she played key roles in producing and developing numerous film projects including “We Are Your Friends,” “Baby Driver,” “Theory of Everything,” “Everest” and “Les Miserables.”

In her new position, Byer is responsible for identifying, developing and producing the company’s feature film projects as well as working closely with filmmakers, directors and other talent. She reports directly to James Lopez, president of Will Packer Productions.

“Johanna is a highly regarded and respected executive who will be a great addition to Wpp as we ramp up our slate of films and expand our features business,” said Lopez. “We look forward to developing meaningful and impactful projects with her.

Black makeup artist Denise Tunnell has over 84 credits to her name. Her films include, “Mean Girls 2,” “Stomp the Yard,” “The Notebook,” “Furious 7” and most recently, Netflix’s “Sweet Magnolias.” Despite that body of work, Tunnell is still asked on job interviews, “What White actors have you done?” She would rather be asked, “Can you do a White actress?”

Conversations about diversity and representation haven’t stopped for Tunnell. They’re continuing, only getting louder. She’s asked on Zoom calls to discuss such topics. And she says yes because she is aware of younger makeup artists coming up behind her. She wants to make things better for the next generation of artists.

Tunnell talks to Variety about her experiences and challenges as a Black makeup artist, and how a show like “Sweet Magnolias” is reflective of society through its representation of Blacks and People of color.

Apple opened up a world of “infinite imagination” when it dropped the trailer for its upcoming reboot of Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” on Monday.

In the trailer, which you can view above, you’ll see five tales teased ahead of the anthology’s March 6 launch on Apple TV+ — though very little is given away about any of those new amazing stories.

The reboot of the Academy Award-winning director’s ’80s NBC series “will transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers,” per Apple.

Today, Apple released the first trailer for the new Amazing Stories, a reimagining of the classic anthology series that will premiere on Apple TV+ on March 6th:

Throughout its history, the Academy Awards has been subject to intense criticism for the issues it embraces — and ignores. This year’s uproar over the lack of diversity among nominations in the highest-profile awards categories is the latest example. This failure reflects a chronic dearth of opportunity at Hollywood’s top artistic and financial levels. The milestone nominations for best picture for “BlacKkKlansman” and “Black Panther” last year or the victory of “12 Years a Slave” in 2014 seem like aberrations.

That lack of diversity also means a missed financial opportunity due to Hollywood’s unwillingness to take reasonable risks. This is largely because the studios’ frequently white, male decision-makers and prominent public figures represent decades-old demographics and thinking. The audience for theatrical movies is now dramatically more diverse in the United States and internationally.

Apple TV+ revealed the premiere date for its long-awaited reboot of Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” and a first-look image from the upcoming anthology series during the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday.

Executive produced by Spielberg himself, along with “Once Upon a Time” co-creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, “Amazing Stories” will launch Friday, March 6 on Apple TV+.

Each episode of the reimagining of Spielberg’s original mid-’80s series will “transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers,” according to Apple.
