This episode is based on a short story by Eando Binder, which both predated and influenced Isaac Asimov. The publisher of his collection of short stories used the same title, despite Asimov's wishes.
This episode is based on the first two of ten stories about the robot Adam Link which appeared in the sci-fi pulp Amazing Stories between 1939 and 1942 - all credited to Eando (brothers Earl & Otto) Binder - "I, Robot" (January 1939) and "The Trial of Adam Link, Robot" (July 1939). In 1955 Otto Binder adapted both stories for the E.C. Comics' title Weird Science-Fantasy; issues #27 & 28 respectively.
Leonard Nimoy (Judson Ellis) later played Thurman Cutler in the remake I, Robot (1995). Along with David McCallum, Cliff Robertson, Peter Breck and Barbara Rush, he is one of only five actors to appear in both The Outer Limits (1963) and The Outer Limits (1995).
There are numerous references to Frankenstein in the beginning, including the scene of a little girl playing near water, and a pitchfork mob pursuing the robot.
This episode follows a similar plot and name to the 2005 movie I, Robot.
