One of two shows that FX greenlighted in 2007 with female lead characters, trying to shake its public reputation as a "male network". The other show was The Riches (2007).
On the feature documentary Showrunners: The Art of Running a TV Show (2014), creator Matthew Carnahan reveals that his original pitch of the show didn't have a female lead character. Because FX was looking for shows with women as center characters, Carnahan agreed to rewrite it to create Lucy Spiller and work with Courteney Cox. The creator says this was the first of several concessions he made on the show, and described his relationship with FX's President and General Manager, John Landgraf, as difficult, to the point that he hasn't seen the second season of the show, because it had changed so much.
Courteney Cox at one point angrily says, "I *hate* dancing in the dark!" Cox co-starred in the 1984 music video for Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark".
Ian Hart (Don) announced he was going to leave the series after season 2. The show was later cancelled and only 7 episodes of season 2 went to air.
Jennifer Aniston guest stars in the season 1 finale, her first appearance with Courteney Cox in a narrative TV episode since the end of Friends (1994).
