Lucasfilm recently announced a new Star Wars trilogy to be led by Simon Kinberg, known for his work on Fox’s X-Men films. The news was expected to spark major fan excitement, but the response has been surprisingly lukewarm.
Since the announcement, fan reactions—and even media commentary, which is typically more neutral—have leaned negative. It appears that many fans aren’t looking forward to this new installment, and given recent challenges within the franchise, there may be good reason for the skepticism.
While some hold out hope that Kinberg might revive the series’ classic spirit, Kathleen Kennedy’s recent comments about moving the franchise beyond George Lucas’ original vision suggest that may not be the direction. In this piece, we’ll delve into an insightful analysis from ComicBookMovie.com and highlight fan reactions to this upcoming trilogy.

Lucasfilm recently announced a new Star Wars trilogy that will be headed by Simon Kinberg, best known for his work on several films from Fox’s X-Men franchise. The announcement was something big and it was supposed to result in a lot of fan enthusiasm, but based on what we’re seeing, the reactions are everything but!
Namely, after the announcement, the reactions by fans, but also by media outlets – which is rare – have been mostly negative and it doesn’t look like anyone is looking forward to these movies, and based on the recent successes of the franchise, there seems to be a good reason for it.
While some fans are hopeful that Kinberg might bring back the franchise to its roots, Kathleen Kennedy’s comments about the franchise needing to move away from George Lucas’ original narrative don’t seem to indicate this.

The Star Wars franchise is a mess. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's time in charge of the studio has been chaotic, disorganised, and directionless. Meanwhile, a small section of the fanbase has become increasingly vocal and grotesquely toxic.
Over the years, a lot of hate has been directed at Kennedy because she's a woman. If that sort of misogynistic Bs is what you're hoping to find here, move along now. The fact is, the executive has delivered a lot of hits for the Disney-owned studio, breaking box office records and helping put Disney+ on the map with The Mandalorian.
However, those achievements are quickly being overshadowed and this week's reports about a new Star Wars trilogy are the final straw. It's time for Kennedy to go before the damage done to this franchise becomes irreparable.
You can find our take on where it's all gone wrong for Star Wars on...

Simon Kinberg, the writer of Fox’s “X-Men” movies, is the latest in a long carousel of writers and producers who will try their hand at bringing “Star Wars” back to the big screen.
Kinberg will develop, write, and produce a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films for Lucasfilm, according to a report first in Deadline. Though there’s some difference of opinion in the trades as to whether the series will continue the Skywalker Saga and be Episodes X-xii or will be focused on a new group of characters.
While there have been a plethora of “Star Wars” series on Disney+ in the last five years, there hasn’t been a single theatrical “Star Wars” movie since the Skywalker Saga concluded with “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker” back in 2019. There have though been a lot of start and stop efforts, with a slew of filmmakers and writers coming and going over the years.

The world’s biggest drill rapper may spend the rest of his life in bars — and no one should want his crown. This week, Chicago rapper Lil Durk was arrested in an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill Savannah, Georgia, rapper Quando Rondo in L.A. in August 2022. Quando’s cousin Lul Pab was murdered instead, spurring Quando’s anguished cries at the crime scene. Then Durk put those “no” wails on the intro to an unreleased song, to the awe of the same voyeurs and Reddit rats now calling Durk...

The Instigators is a new film from Doug Liman, a director who burst onto the scene with the Sundance-rejected indie hit Swingers and the criminally underseen but ultra-cool Go. Yet, somehow, Liman transitioned from cult comedies to big-action Hollywood blockbusters with the first two films in The Bourne franchise and the film that made Jennifer Aniston a divorcee, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
In addition to critically approved films like American Made and Fair Game, Liman has a filmography stacked with critical and box office disappointments. Real stinkers include the stagnant Chaos Walking, the forgettably campy Road House, the underwhelming Jumper, the obligatory Three Musketeers, and the streaming film Locked Down, which had many rooting for a Covid-19 victory.
Unfortunately, things will not improve with The Instigators, mainly because of a thoughtless and inattentive script that never bothers to sweat the details.

Exclusive: Fremantle has picked up global distribution rights to Hell Jumper, the BBC’s upcoming doc series about a British aid worker who died in Ukraine.
Produced by Clarkson’s Farm maker Expectation and revealed by Deadline last year, Hell Jumper uses first-person footage to follow a group of volunteers who set out to save lives during the war.
Chris Parry headed out in a white van with friends and took to TikTok and Instagram to show footage of their daring rescues, but he and another volunteer, Andrew Bagshaw, were tragically killed trying to save an elderly woman trapped in her home.
Fremantle will sell outside the UK as the show gets set to launch on the BBC in the coming weeks. The producer-distributor’s international senior acquisitions boss Céire Clark described Hell Jumper as a “remarkable tale of resilience.”

MTV’s Making the Band starred hip-hop mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs as he formed the next pop supergroup. Danity Kane, a girl group featuring Aubrey O’Day, found major commercial success after attaining fame from the series. Unfortunately, O’Day didn’t have a great experience with Combs. Here’s what she said about how she thought he may have been stalking her at home.

In the 2022 miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christensen, and Ewan McGregor reunited on screen for the first time since 2005 when their iconic characters locked horns once again. The series which is part of George Lucas’ cult Star Wars franchise, is set years after the events in Revenge of the Sith, and brings the titular Jedi Master face to face with his arch nemesis Darth Vader.

Apart from many déjà vu moments from the various films, the series also brought back some memorable props, including the famous healing vessel called the bacta tank. Christensen who was required to get into this big water-filled vessel for his character, dispensed with a body double for the test run, and went through training to master the art of being underwater without the help of any breathing aids.

Jumper, Justin Anderson’s first short, opened on a naked man bathing in a pool. Conceived in 2014 for the tenth anniversary of British fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, the film was a riff on Pasolini’s Teorema; it followed a lunar stranger who shows up uninvited at a luscious Spanish villa and upends the frigid lives of its tenants. Ten years later, the same idea and shot survive more or less intact in Anderson’s feature debut, Swimming Home, based on a 2011 Man Booker-shortlisted novel by Deborah Levy. Except this time the setting is a summer home on an unidentified Greek island, the nude intruder a young woman, and her target is not a whole family but its taciturn, haunted patriarch.

Award-winning artist Justin Anderson’s debut feature “Swimming Home” has its world premiere in competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam. Variety has secured access to the first clip from the film.
The film, an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s 2012 Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel, centers on poet Joe (Christopher Abbott) and war photographer Isabel (Mackenzie Davis), whose marriage is dying when Kitti (Ariane Labed), a naked stranger found floating in the pool at their sunny holiday villa in Greece, is invited to stay. Oscar nominated Lebanese actor-director Nadine Labaki plays a significant role in the film as does emerging actor Freya Hannan-Mills.
In 2014, Anderson directed “Jumper,” a short inspired by Pasolini’s “Teorema,” about a man emerging from a pool and standing naked in the window during a family dinner. A friend saw the film and suggested that he read Levy’s novel. The book resonated with Anderson and he contacted Levy.

As much as people complain about Hollywood putting out the same things year after year, the fact remains that name recognition gets people into theater seats. Moreover, remakes and reboots give filmmakers an opportunity to retell beloved stories from a different perspectives. In this age of high-budgets and higher-expectations, reboots and remakes are among the only types of movies that major studios like to make these days.
So whether you’re feeling cynical about this year’s offerings or optimistic about the second swings filmmakers are taking, here are the biggest reboots and remakes coming in 2024.
Mean Girls (January 12)
Although the promotional materials tried to do their best to conceal it, the 2024 Mean Girls doesn’t so much adapt the beloved 2004 comedy, but rather the Broadway musical that followed. Which means that, yes, viewers will hear more songs than “Jingle Bell Rock.” Singer Reneé Rapp reprises her stage performance as lead Plastic Regina George,...

Hitting it big as an anti-pop star, going after all the top charting artists but this Mc soon became so successful that he accidentally became a top charting pop star himself. But of course, this legendary musician tried to fight off the demons of fame and fortune when they manifested in the form of substance abuse and depression. He would over come them, then relapse and recover again… but where he is at in his monster career now? Is he still rapping it up in da streets? Still topping the charts? In a video that quickly went viral, Drake and Lil Yachty are seen in a portion of a two-hour livestream promoting the online casino Stake.
At one point, Drake logs into what appears to be his Td account, in order to send a $499 tip to a Stake user named Daisy.

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Samuel L. Jackson has sported a variety of hairstyles in his movies, from Pulp Fiction to Unbreakable. But there was one unnamed filmmaker who tried to restrict the hairdo Jackson wore in a movie.

Jackson often chooses his hairstyle for the characters that he portrays in movies. Occasionally the actor would feel a certain hairdo would fit a particular role, while also telling audiences a bit more about his character’s story.
In the M. Night Shyamalan film Unbreakable, for instance, Jackson portrays a genius with hints of mental instability. Both Shyamalan and Jackson agreed that a disheveled look for Jackson’s hair would be best for his Unbreakable counterpart.
“I was thinking Frederick Douglass,” he once said according to LA Times about his character’s hair. “It informed my character very well because he’s a thinker.

Two days before this past Christmas, Tory Lanez was found guilty of three counts related to the July 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. He now faces over 20 years in prison and deportation to his native Canada. For many, the verdict represents justice for Megan, but others contend that there can be no true retribution for victims of violent crimes. Tory’s jail time doesn’t undo Megan’s physical harm, nor the barrage of mistreatment from people who ridiculed her claims for over two years.

Exclusive: Scott Gardenhour (13 Hours) is set to produce Ponzi: Pure and True alongside Flag On The Play Productions and producers Dominic Zamprogna and Travis Schneider. The upcoming film adapts the Charles Ponzi biography Ponzi: The Incredible True Story of the King of Financial Cons by Donald Dunn.
Ponzi was, of course, the Italian swindler notorious for his “Ponzi scheme,” used to cheat would-be investors across North America out of tens of millions of dollars, beginning in the 1920s. The film on the con artist has been written by Richard Kahan. Producers’ search for a director for the project is now underway.
“Before Madoff, before any other big-time hustler, there was Charles Ponzi,” said Gardenhour in a statement. “It’s time to meet the swindler’s swindler, the man who invented The Ponzi Scheme. And with an incredible script by Richard Kahan, the true story is crazier and much stranger than fiction.

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.
Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).
Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

Rachel Bilson and ex Hayden Christensen's daughter Briar Rose has a name fit for a princess. The O.C. alum, 40, recently shared how she and the Stars Wars actor, 41, chose their 7-year-old's name. "So, when I was pregnant," she began on the Aug. 22 episode of her Broad Ideas podcast, "we really were stuck on Millie and then the more we thought about it—cause Hayden and I met in a movie called Jumper and my character's name was Millie—and then we couldn't decide if that's like super lame or super cute." However, once Hayden's mom, Alie Nelson, told them that the full name of Millie would be Millicent, the actress said she quickly...

A follow-up to the 130M-plus grossing movie Law Abiding Citizen is happening with producer Lucas Foster and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer returning, as well as Gerard Butler and his G-Base partner Alan Siegel reprising their roles as producers.
The storyline is being kept secrets. The first movie starred Butler and Jamie Foxx and was directed by F. Gary Gray, and followed assistant district attorney Nick Rice’s (Foxx) pursuit of Clyde Shelton (Butler), a frustrated father who implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the entire judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets free the man who murdered his wife and daughter. The pic in December on Netflix became one of the top three most viewed movies alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice and Sandra Bullock’s The Unforgivable.
Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill are producing alongside Foster and Wimmer. Foster will produce under his Warp Films banner.

Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins has lived, dare we say it, a semi-charmed life. But here’s something he’s never actually done: interact, or even meet, Tommy Lee and the rest of Mötley Crüe — despite what viewers see on this week’s episode of Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy.”
In the show’s fifth episode, “Uncle Jim and Aunt Susie in Duluth,” Lee (Sebastian Stan) and his Crüe bandmates show up at a recording studio to rehearse. It’s 1996, and Mötley Crüe (and hair metal in general) has been overtaken in popularity by alternative rock — yet the Crüe is still taken aback when they’re assigned to the smaller studio B. Who’s taking the bigger room, the one the rockers are used to? Some new band named Third Eye Blind.
Lee’s not happy, and he barges into Studio A. “Hey, who the fuck are you guys?...

It doesn’t matter what Hayden Christensen accomplishes throughout the rest of his career, he’ll always be known as Anakin Skywalker. A lot of actors successfully manage to avoid being typecast and escape the shadow of playing a major role in a beloved franchise, but none of the 39 year-old’s movies over the last fifteen years have been able to see him shed the weight of having been the future Darth Vader.
Christensen likely made his peace with that a long time ago though, and he’s been a regular presence on the convention circuit that’s always happy to field questions about Star Wars whenever he’s asked. After months of rumor and speculation, it was finally confirmed at this week’s Disney Investor Day that the Jumper star would return to a galaxy far, far away as the former Chosen One to co-star alongside Ewan McGregor in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Phoebe Bridgers has a remarkable ability to invest seemingly banal scenes with profound emotion. In moments like those, she lets the everyday settings heighten the feelings in her words by contrast, using that sense of familiarity to surprise you with how much you care about what she’s singing.

YouTube has canceled “Impulse,” arguably its final out-and-out drama, after two seasons.
The cancelation leaves only a couple remaining scripted series at the web subscription service, namely “Cobra Kai” and “Liza on Demand,” and is the latest example of YouTube’s shifting content strategy.
The shift became clear in April of last year, when the quadruple cancelation of “Champaign Ill,” “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,” “Sideswiped,” and “Do You Want to See a Dead Body” signaled that rather than taking on streamers like Netflix and Amazon with a traditional slate of scripted projects, YouTube was changing its focus to genres such as unscripted, educational and music artist-focused docu-follows.

A new international trailer for Blumhouse’s horror remake of Fantasy Island has given us a brief look at the character Michael Rooker will be playing in the film.
The pic is based on the popular TV series of the same name that ran for seven seasons from 1977 to 1984, in which various guests travel to live out their deepest fantasies on the titular tropical paradise run by the enigmatic and possibly immortal Mr. Rourke. Each scenario often provides exactly what the guest asked for but in a way not expected, usually leaving them learning something about themselves in the process. The remake is a not entirely dissimilar idea to The Banana Splits Movie, which also took a beloved property and updated it with a horror twist, and it turned out to be a surprisingly decent film.

YouTube Premium's Cobra Kai will, for a limited window, be viewable for free, starting with Season 1.
Cobra Kai is kicking through its YouTube Premium paywall, making an experimental transition to free viewing!
The entirety of Cobra Kai’s first season, which arrived back in 2018, is being released for the first time outside the subscription auspices of YouTube Premium, with the caveat of the episodes being presented in ad-supported form. Moreover, along with some other YouTube Premium content, the show’s second season – still relatively fresh from its April 24 premiere – will also be made available in free-but-ad-filled form on September 11. However, as mentioned, this is an experimental transition, and, consequently, the free availability will be limited – at least, for now, anyway.
As YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl says of the ad-supported experiment in a statement.

“Today, we are welcoming a global audience to enjoy our award-winning series and specials.

Maddie Hasson was drawn to “Impulse” because she found the protagonist, Henrietta “Henry” Coles, to be “really interesting, especially for a young female character.” Based on the book series by Steven Gould, the YouTube Originals series centers on a teenager who discovers she possesses powers of teleportation following a sexual assault. A version of this story was previously filmed by Doug Liman as the 2007 film “Jumper.” The filmmaker then brought the show to the streaming network and directed the pilot episode. The actress describes Henry as “a very lonely person. She’s always on her own. I liked her because she’s like a raw nerve. She’s very angry, real and harsh. I liked seeing that in a young female character because I think so often young adult TV shows can get caught up … in being likable.

Lauren LeFranc reveals that “Impulse” got its start when director Doug Liman met with YouTube to try and right a cinematic wrong. According to LeFranc, he said that his 2007 science-fiction film “Jumper” was “the only movie that I’ve never really been happy with, and I think I can do better.” He had intended it to be “a coming-of-age story, and it became something different from the studio.” This new series, on which LeFranc serves as showrunner, was an opportunity to tell the story the way it was meant to be.
