- Nasik-based Heerendra "Heero" (Ajay Devgn) and Raj Ranade (Prashant Raj Sachdev) are bodyguards of a politician but, after their employer is implicated in a scam, they end up assaulting a police officer and flee to Mumbai. Once there, they meet with Rambhabhai (Rajpal Yadav), who, in turn, gets them employed with a gangster named Shambhu. After a short, while the duo are apprehended by Police Inspector Narsimha (Mohanlal), questioned, and after they agree to cooperate to bring down Shambhu, they will be let go. Narsimha tells the duo that Shambhu works for a UP gangster named Zakar Bhai. Shambhu has 40 murder cases against Shambhu, but no evidence. Narsimha convinces the duo that Shambhu is setting them up both to take the fall when the right time comes. The two succeed in assisting the police arrest Shambhu, but they themselves are arrested (Narsimha says that he has to arrest them both as according to the law they were working for Shambhu and are liable for their actions), tried in Court, and sentenced to a year in jail.
After their discharge, they are again met by Inspector Narsimha, who, this time, wants to recruit them to capture and kill dreaded bandit Babban Singh (Amitabh Bachchan). Heerendra and Raj agree to carry out this task for 8 Lakh Rupees. The duo at first think of taking the money and running away, as punishment to Narsimha for jailing them in their previous encounter. The duo travel to Kaliganj where Narsimha gives them Rs 1 Lakh advance. He also explains that Babban wants the Kaliganj land as it close to the sea and would help him move his contraband, without any interruption. That night, as they plan their escape, Narsimha's daughter in law Durga comes in and gives them the remaining 7 Lakhs and tells them that Narsimha is wrong to think that someone else will fight his personal battle.
From the house servant, the duo learn that Babban had slaughtered Narsimha's wife, Kavita (Suchitra Krishnamoorthi), and son, Subbu, as well as cut his fingers off. The story follows.. Narsimha badly wanted to arrest Narsimha and went after his only weakness, his younger brother Amber. Amber hated Narsimha as he was a simple man and did not want his family to know of his brother's criminal history. Narsimha colluded with Amber's wife and attacked when Babban was meeting Amber at his house. Narsimha forced Babban to surrender by threatening to kill Amber, but accidentally shoots Amber when he gets in the way while Narsimha was shooting at Babban's henchman who tries to attack him. Babban gets life sentence, but swears revenge. Babban is rescued from jail and attacks Narsimha's house on Holi and kills the entire family. Durga is saved as she was at her clinic. Narsimha is blind with rage and goes after Babban. he is easily captured and put forward in front of Babban. Babban cuts his fingers as Narsimha had used his fingers to press the trigger on Amber.
They re-locate to Kaliganj, where Heerendra falls in love with an auto-rickshaw driver, Ghungroo (Priyanka Kothari) (Heero meets her at the railway station and she takes them to Kaliganj. Heero is smitten in the first meeting) (Later Heero takes Ghungroo to teach her how to shoot. she lives with her mom and dad), while Raj gives his heart to Subbu's widow, Durga (Sushmita Sen). They then set out to capture Babban and meet with some success during Diwali. They first break the finger of one of Babban's collector, and sends him back as a message. Babban kills the collector for failing to protect his evil reputation. Babban decides to attack the village on Diwali. Raj & Heero resist, but Heero is captured by Babban's men. Babban uses Heero to draw out Raj. Heero distracts Babban and seizes a gun and goes on the attack, forcing Babban to retreat.
Heero asks Raj to talk to Ghungroo's parents for their marriage. Raj asks Durga for help. Durga goes with Raj, but he messes it up by revealing that Heero has no education, no income and had many affairs in the past. Gangu mom throws Raj out. Heero threatens to commit suicide in front of the village well. The whole village forces Gangu mummy to say yes, as else Heero will turn into a ghost and stalk the village forever.
Next, Narsimha gets info that Babban will meet a trader to buy ammunition and asks the duo to attack. The attack is a complete surprise, but Babban manages to escape and Raj is shot through the shoulder. Babban then starts to ambush and kill the Kaliganj residents to compel them to surrender the duo to him. Raj and Heero give in, and meet Babban's henchmen in an abandoned building (actually they pretend to give in and instead plan an ambush). They fight the goons. Babban's right-hand man, Tambe (Sushant Singh), is badly injured, and later on, killed by Babban for failing. Raj speaks to Narsimha about Durga and Narsimha tells Durga that he will be very happy to see her happy.
Babban is enraged and launches a vicious counter attacks on the Kaliganj village. He abducts Ghungroo and attempts to force upon her in front of Heero when he comes to rescue her. Raj intervenes and rescues Heero and Ghungroo. Before they can escape, Raj is captured and held at gunpoint by Babban. Before Heero can save Ghungroo and come back to help Raj, Babban kills Raj.
Babban has a final encounter with Heero and Inspector Narsimha, where Heero was about to kill him, but Inspector Narsimha tells him to spare and let him kill Babban for slaughtering his family. However, Babban tries to escape, and he's killed with a knife in his back. turns out Babban killed himself as he didn't want to be arrested again.
