The streaming services continue their ceaseless rollout of new content, and several fresh titles are debuting this weekend.
First up, arriving on HBO Max is The King of Staten Island, a semi-autobiographical comedy drama partly inspired by the life of its star, comedian and SNL alum Pete Davidson. A waster high school dropout still living with his mother dreams of becoming a tattoo artist, but is stifled by his medical and mental health issues, which are only compounded when his mom begins dating a new man who’s a firefighter like his deceased father.
Also on HBO Max is season 2 of The Alienist, subtitled Angel of Darkness after the novel on which it’s based, seeing the return of its ad hoc team of investigators, this time looking into the brutal deaths of young children that may be the work of a serial killer, while digging into familiar themes of societal status,...

Don’t let the cheery name fool you. During its premiere at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan), “Festival” — Kim Lok-kyoung’s slice-of-life family drama and first feature — warranted sniffles and tears all around. This incredible tranche de vie combines James Joyce-ian levels of reality with the irony endemic to Greek tragedy. Little wonder, then, that the film should win four awards in the Korean Fantastic Feature section that it competed in — including the Audience Award, a Distribution Award, Best Actor, and the prestigious Best Techcross Environmental Services Korean Fantastic Film.
“Festival” follows the humble story of Kyung-man (Ha Jun). Kyung-man is an unknown Mc who goes the extra (and often humiliating) mile to take care of his perpetually ailing father and his younger sister, Kyung-mi (So Joo-yeon). When Kyung-man’s father suddenly passes away, however, Kyung-man finds himself unable to pay the funeral bills all on his own…...

It's 'Father's' day at Dinard
DINARD, France -- In My Father's Den, directed by New Zealander Brad McGann, swept the board at the Dinard Festival of British Film on Saturday, taking the Golden Hitchcock award for best film, the best cinematography prize and the audience award. The movie stars Matthew MacFadyen as a war reporter who returns to his native New Zealand after his father's death and befriends a 16-year-old girl, only to find himself the key suspect when she disappears. The film qualified for inclusion at Dinard because it has a U.K. co-producer, Dixie Linder. A new award for best screenplay among the six movies in competition went to Festival, an ensemble comedy set during the Edinburgh comedy fest written and directed by Annie Griffin. As with McGann's picture, it was her first feature film as director.
