Fans of the 2002 film 28 Days Later and its follow-up 28 Weeks Later have been waiting seventeen years for another entry in the franchise, hoping we’d someday see a movie titled 28 Months Later. We’re not getting that one, but 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are currently working on reviving the franchise, and they’re going to make this revival worth the wait. Not only are we getting a new movie called 28 Years Later, but we’re actually getting a whole trilogy of sequels! Sony has reported that the film is set for a June 20th, 2025 release date. The film began shooting in late May around the Northeast of England. But what else do we know about this 28 Years Later sequel trilogy.

With the 28 Days Later franchise resuming after nearly two decades, Ralph Fiennes is preparing fans to return to the zombie apocalypse.
Ahead of the June 20, 2025 premiere of 28 Years Later, the 2x Oscar nominee revealed some new plot details and an update on the status of the new trilogy, kicking off with returning Og writer/director duo, Alex Garland and Danny Boyle.
“It’s three films, of which two have been shot,” Fiennes told IndieWire.
Fiennes explained of the plot, “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor...

While plot details for the movie have been kept under wraps until now, we know that Boyle will return to direct this opening chapter before handing over the reins to Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) for the sequel. According to star Ralph Fiennes, that follow-up has already been shot!

Danny Boyle is reprising the grungy, digital style of 2002’s 28 Days Later with his upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later. With iPhones…
Depending on your interest in visual aesthtics and depending on how long it’s been since you last saw 2002’s 28 Days Later, you may have forgotten just how grungy Danny Boyle’s zombie horror flick looks. That was all intentional, of course; the movie was shot by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle using a a Canon Xl-1, a relatively inexpensive ‘prosumer’ camcorder, recording onto MiniDV.
It gave the film a noisy, unvarnished look, perfect for a film about the catastrophic fall of civilisation. According to Wired, Boyle has elected to go down a similar route for his forthcoming sequel, 28 Years Later. The outlet reports that the film was shot on iPhone 15s, with the devices being slightly modified to allow for the attachment of full-frame Dslr lenses.

Looking for something to scare your socks off? Here’s our picks of the best horror films on Disney Plus UK.
There’s something primal and exciting about experiencing real fear in a safe place, such as your sofa. That’s the beauty of horror films, but I think you’ll agree that it can be tricky finding a really good one. After all, fear is subjective and there’s a lot of less-than-great scary films out there, which is why we felt this list was a pretty important one.
If you feel like you’ve exhausted the libraries of other streaming services, Disney+ has a surprisingly wide range of horror films in its catalogue, and we’ve picked some excellent suggestions for you. We’ve got ghosts, cannibals, mutants, zombies and the occasional so-bad-it’s-actually-good film here. Enjoy!

The sequel to 28 Years Later begins production today as producer Andrew Macdonald and writer Alex Garland talked about what will hopefully be a trilogy and their enduring partnership during an on-stage talk at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) on Sunday, August 18.
“The first one [in the trilogy] is 28 Years Later, Alex has written them both [28 Years Later and its sequel], Danny directed [28 Years Later and] has finished shooting,” said Macdonald, who is also chair of Eiff. “We’re just about to start tomorrow morning [August 19] part two, directed by Nia DaCosta, and we hope there is going to be a third part.

Filmmaker Alex Garland was joined by his longtime collaborator and producer Andrew Macdonald in Edinburgh to ponder their career-spanning relationship, favorite projects and upcoming 28 Days zombie trilogy.
The duo, who have teamed up on titles such as The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002), Ex Machina (2014) and most recently, Civil War (2024), spoke at an Edinburgh International Film Festival event on Sunday to a jam-packed room of industry professionals (who were hanging on to every word).
Garland and Macdonald discussed how they came to work together, as well as a few rows they’ve had over the years. Garland, who began his career as a novelist with The Beach before pivoting into screenwriting and, eventually, directing, admitted that while he doesn’t particularly enjoy directing, there is one film — his debut directorial feature — that he considers his top pick from an impressive résumé.

I’ve been obsessed with apocalyptic fiction since I was a small boy, but young Luiz was always frustrated with the disproportionate amount of media that takes place months or even years after the end of the world instead of showing us the apocalypse as it happens. It was only years later that I understood the logistical difficulties in telling a believable yarn about a near-instant societal collapse, though I never stopped wishing for more stories that take place in the moments between our current world and whatever wasteland comes next.
Thankfully, there are a few brave filmmakers willing to take on the challenge of depicting the early days of humanity’s downfall. It’s not all Marvel and animated fairytales. Here’s our pick of the best films you can watch now on Disney Plus UK:
The output of Marvel, Lucasfilm and the Mouse House’s own library of films and TV shows are Disney Plus’s big selling point. But the streaming service also features a large collection of other films that have nothing to do with its major franchises – many of them movies Disney now owns after acquiring other Hollywood studios.
With this in mind, here’s our list of the best films on Disney Plus that aren’t Iron Man, Star Wars, Frozen or anything of that ilk. Encompassing just about every genre, there’s sure to be something to suit your taste if you’re struggling to decide what to watch this evening.
We’ll also keep this list updated as titles shuffle off and new ones are added.

With 28 Years Later having wrapped production, we look at what the sequel’s story might potentially look like.
Nb: The following contains spoilers for 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, plus potential plot details for 28 Years Later.
Given just how influential and financially successful it was, it’s a little surprising that 2002’s 28 Days Later hasn’t spawned more sequels. Instead, the past 22 years have seen the release of just one follow-up: 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, a film even more dark and despairing than its predecessor.
Things are about to change, however, with the 2025 release of 28 Years Later. It’ll see director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland reunite for a belated sequel, which as its title suggests will take place almost three decades after the outbreak of the Rage virus that swept across the UK in the original film.

The crime drama, which is a mostly fictionalized take on Danny Lyon’s seminal 1968 photojournalistic book of the same name, chronicles the rise and fall of a Chicago outlaw motorcycle club. Framed through a series of interviews with a fictionalized Danny Lyon (Mike Faist), Comer’s character, Kathy, recounts the story of how she became the protective wife of Benny (Austin Butler) and why she went to great lengths to shield him from the club leader’s (Tom Hardy’s Johnny) attempts to have Benny succeed him.
The now 82-year-old Lyon offered up the audio interviews from his mid-60s tenure with the real-life Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club, and Nichols, in turn, provided Comer with the audio of the...

Jason Statham And Cillian Murphy: Why Was The Former Chosen In Peaky Blinders? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Almost everyone who watched Peaky Blinders fell in love with Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Thomas Shelby, finding it hard to imagine anyone else in the role. However, did you know that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight initially wanted Jason Statham to play Thomas Shelby instead of Cillian Murphy?
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight met both Cillian Murphy and Jason Statham in Los Angeles to discuss the role of Thomas Shelby. Initially, Knight opted for Jason Statham, explaining to Esquire that one of the reasons was because, physically, Statham commanded the room. In contrast, Murphy, when met in person, did not immediately embody the character of Thomas Shelby. Knight admitted to Esquire that he was initially too short-sighted to see beyond this. Jeremy Renner has tasted great success juggling between character-driven dramas and big studio blockbusters. Before his Avengers fame, the actor starred in many compelling drams like Dahmer, Neo Ned, 28 Weeks Later, and The Hurt Locker where he showed off his incredible acting chops. He went on to star in the MCU and the Mission Impossible franchise.

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

The Star Wars franchise has introduced or featured many stars of today in pivotal roles. While actresses such as Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman gained worldwide fame for their roles in the prequel trilogy, one other actress who started out her Hollywood career was Insidious star Rose Byrne. The actress played a handmaiden in Attack of the Clones.
Though she was in the film for barely a few minutes, Byrne reportedly mentioned that she had a good time on set. She has since gone on to establish herself as a bankable actress with franchises such as X-Men and Insidious. However, she maintains that her most challenging role was her breakthrough film The Goddess of 1967.

Since we first learned of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's plans for 28 Years Later back in January, news on the movie — the first in a proposed sequel trilogy to Brit zombie horror duology 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later — and the franchise's future has come thick and fast. Last month alone, we shared that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have joined 28 Years Later's cast, and that Candyman director Nia DaCosta is in talks to helm the second part of the new trilogy. And now we know at last that newly-minted Oppenheimer Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who was already aboard as an executive producer, will be making a return in front of the camera too.
In an interview with Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman was asked directly whether Murphy — who starred in Boyle's first film as bike courier-turned-Rage virus survivor Jim — would be back for 28 Years Later.

We got word earlier this year that 28 Days Later director (Danny Boyle) and writer (Alex Garland) are teaming up for a series of sequels to the 2002 horror hit, and following the recent news that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes have signed on to play the lead roles, it's been confirmed that Cillian Murphy will return for 28 Years Later.
There was speculation that Murphy, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in Oppenheimer, might be set to reprise the role of Jim from the original movie when he signed on as an executive producer, and Sony has now made it official.
"Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way," Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman told Deadline when asked if Murphy would return. "This is Danny [Boyle] at his best, combined with a very commercial genre,...

Cillian Murphy has been confirmed to return for 28 Years Later by Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman.
Speaking to Deadline, the movie executive said Murphy would be back for the first film in the zombie franchise’s new trilogy and vaguely teased the actor would be involved “in a surprising way and in a way that grows.”
Rothman also praised the film as director Danny Boyle “at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver.”
Further addressing 28 Years Later, Rothman emphasized the movie is “not in any way a literal sequel.”
Earlier this year, Murphy was similarly opaque about his potential role in 28 Years Later during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, simply saying, “Watch this space.”

Danny Boyle's lo-fi 2002 zombie apocalypse film "28 Days Later" caused a stir in the horror community for its grainy digital photography (shot by Anthony Dod Mantle) and for its introduction of "fast zombies" into the pop vernacular. The zombies in "28 Days Later" were, unlike most movie zombies seen up to that point, fast-moving and vicious rather than mindless and shambling. It is credited for breathing new life into the zombie genre, followed as it was by other zombie hits like the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, George Romero's "Land of the Dead," and the hit 2010 series "The Walking Dead." "28 Days Later" also tapped into a lot of America's post-9/11 ennui, presenting hard-edged images of urban desolation. Everyone felt like the world had ended, and Boyle aesthetically agreed.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes are looking to take a bite out of 28 Years Later, with the actors joining the long-awaited sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Danny Boyle is once again directing, after helming 2002’s 28 Days Later, which centered on a man (Cillian Murphy) who wakes up in the hospital to find the United Kingdom overtaken by a zombie plague. Civil War filmmaker Alex Garland, who penned the script, is back to write what is intended to be a trilogy of films for Sony. The original feature helped revive the zombie genre and already had a sequel, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, which only nominally involved Boyle and Garland as executive producers.
Boyle and Garland will produce the new film with Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice and Bernie Bellew. Original star Murphy will serve as executive producer.
