Fans of the 2002 film 28 Days Later and its follow-up 28 Weeks Later have been waiting seventeen years for another entry in the franchise, hoping we’d someday see a movie titled 28 Months Later. We’re not getting that one, but 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are currently working on reviving the franchise, and they’re going to make this revival worth the wait. Not only are we getting a new movie called 28 Years Later, but we’re actually getting a whole trilogy of sequels! Sony has reported that the film is set for a June 20th, 2025 release date. With the 28 Days Later franchise resuming after nearly two decades, Ralph Fiennes is preparing fans to return to the zombie apocalypse.

Ahead of the June 20, 2025 premiere of 28 Years Later, the 2x Oscar nominee revealed some new plot details and an update on the status of the new trilogy, kicking off with returning Og writer/director duo, Alex Garland and Danny Boyle.

“It’s three films, of which two have been shot,” Fiennes told IndieWire.

Production wrapped on 28 Years Later earlier this year, with that set to be the first instalment of a planned trilogy picking up after the events of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later.

While plot details for the movie have been kept under wraps until now, we know that Boyle will return to direct this opening chapter before handing over the reins to Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) for the sequel. According to star Ralph Fiennes, that follow-up has already been shot!

Production wrapped earlier this summer on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later that intends to launch a brand new trilogy. Boyle and Alex Garland are reteaming for the planned 28 Years trilogy, with Garland writing the first movie and Boyle back in the director’s chair to bring the horror to the screen.

On that note, an article over on Wired this week reveals that 28 Years Later was at least partially filmed with “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s,” specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Wired details in their insightful report on the production, “…the Hollywood thriller, with its budget of $75 million, [is] the biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones.”

The sequel to 28 Years Later begins production today as producer Andrew Macdonald and writer Alex Garland talked about what will hopefully be a trilogy and their enduring partnership during an on-stage talk at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) on Sunday, August 18.

“The first one [in the trilogy] is 28 Years Later, Alex has written them both [28 Years Later and its sequel], Danny directed [28 Years Later and] has finished shooting,” said Macdonald, who is also chair of Eiff. “We’re just about to start tomorrow morning [August 19] part two, directed by Nia DaCosta, and we hope there is going to be a third part.

Filmmaker Alex Garland was joined by his longtime collaborator and producer Andrew Macdonald in Edinburgh to ponder their career-spanning relationship, favorite projects and upcoming 28 Days zombie trilogy.

The duo, who have teamed up on titles such as The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002), Ex Machina (2014) and most recently, Civil War (2024), spoke at an Edinburgh International Film Festival event on Sunday to a jam-packed room of industry professionals (who were hanging on to every word).

Garland and Macdonald discussed how they came to work together, as well as a few rows they’ve had over the years. Garland, who began his career as a novelist with The Beach before pivoting into screenwriting and, eventually, directing, admitted that while he doesn’t particularly enjoy directing, there is one film — his debut directorial feature — that he considers his top pick from an impressive résumé.

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

Since we first learned of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's plans for 28 Years Later back in January, news on the movie — the first in a proposed sequel trilogy to Brit zombie horror duology 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later — and the franchise's future has come thick and fast. Last month alone, we shared that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have joined 28 Years Later's cast, and that Candyman director Nia DaCosta is in talks to helm the second part of the new trilogy. And now we know at last that newly-minted Oppenheimer Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who was already aboard as an executive producer, will be making a return in front of the camera too.

In an interview with Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman was asked directly whether Murphy — who starred in Boyle's first film as bike courier-turned-Rage virus survivor Jim — would be back for 28 Years Later.

Jack O’Connell (Amy Winehouse: Back To Black) has joined the previously announced Jodie Comer (Alone in the Dark, “Killing Eve”), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu) in the upcoming 28 Years Later.

Alex Garland will write the first film and Boyle will return to direct. Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) will direct the second installment in the trilogy from Sony Pictures.

Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” is hitting the big screen next summer. Sony Pictures has slated the long-awaited project for June 20, 2025.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes are set to star in the sequel to “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later.”

Plot details are still being kept under wraps for the new screenplay, written by Alex Garland. It will be part of an upcoming trilogy, for which Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second film.

Boyle and Garland are producing, as is original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice. Bernie Bellew is also producing. Cillian Murphy is also returning as an executive producer, but is not currently attached to star.

“28 Days Later” was released in 2002 and starred a largely unknown Murphy as a bike courier who discovers the release of contagious virus upon awaking from a coma. Boyle directed the feature, while Garland wrote.
