Set in 1914, amidst the early months of World War I, The Last Front takes us to a lesser-known period of history. Director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi brings us to Flanders, Belgium, to witness the horrific “Rape of Belgium” as invading German forces unleash violence upon innocent civilians.
We follow farmer Leonard Lambert and his family, whose quiet lives are shattered with the arrival of the brutal Lieutenant Laurentz and his regiment. Though not a large production, Hayet-Kerknawi’s debut feature aims high. With its focus on ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, the film spotlights a tragic chapter that has faded from memory.
While an imperfect work, strong central performances help elevate the dramatic tale. Iain Glen and up-and-coming actress Sasha Luss anchor the film with grounded and feeling portrayals of parents fighting to protect their children from the ravages of war.

There's no denying that The Simpsons is one of the most iconic animated series of all time. The show premiered in 1989 and has since proven time and time again that its quirky characters, bizarre yet extremely thoughtful plots, and never-ending life lessons are the best thing on television.
Of course, the stories in the show are mostly for adults, but sometimes there are episodes that are relatable for kids. For example, the ones told from Bart's or Lisa's perspective. Being in my late twenties, I can say for sure that I can relate to the stories of both parents and children, because it doesn't matter who is telling the story, but what happens in it.
The show is currently in its 35th season, and frankly, I feel sad about how the writers are treating the one character who loved every other person on the show with all his heart. Of course,...

"Futurama" takes a lot after creator Matt Groening's previous series — a little series you may have heard of called "The Simpsons" — but the main casts of both don't quite line up with each other. After all, "The Simpsons" is about a nuclear family, while "Futurama" is about a group of coworkers. These different comedy settings is one reason why the creators of "Futurama" and "The Simpsons" don't feel they're in competition with each other.
For instance, as the main character of "Futurama," shouldn't Philip J. Fry be the equivalent of Homer Simpson? While both men are lovable and reckless idiots, Groening doesn't think so. Rather, he thinks that Fry's robot best friend, Bender — the lovable scamp (read: sociopath) — is the Homer of "Futurama."
During a 2013 LA Times interview (when "Futurama" was wrapping up its time at Comedy Central), he said, "I think [Bender is] our Homer character — Fry's a little too wimpy.

What if crisis-whammies Nordic drama producers would now tap into other European stories instead of staying in the Nordic bubble and self-sufficient eco-system of mixed national and regional private and public coin? Would it be payback time for European partners who until now have bought into the Nordic Noir, without some form of reciprocity?
The question was raised by Belgium producer Helen Perquy from Banijay Benelux’s Jonnydepony at this week’s Göteborg TV Drama Vision, at a panel which looked into the current Nordic drama production mayhem and possible solutions.
“In Belgium, we do have soft money, tax shelters, Vaf [Flanders Audiovisual Fund], Screen Flanders but you guys in the Nordics have had way more money from broadcasters and global streamers, while we’ve had to be creative [with our financing],” said Perquy.
“For years we’ve watched your series and films, they’ve been up there,” noted the producer, raising her arm up in the air.

"The Simpsons" stopped being a TV show decades ago. It's an institution now. Everyone with even a shred of pop culture literacy can name the core members of the titular family, and millions of others can rattle off a couple dozen residents of Springfield. These characters and their world somehow feel like they've always been around, almost like animation and comedy never actually existed until they did. Generations who grew up in a world where this show was always on, always airing, always available, may not instantly recognize just how much "The Simpsons" shifted television on its axis, but they're living in a world defined by the series' sense of humor, its blend of biting satire, slapstick, and sentiment.
And so it's come to this: /Film decided it was time to select the 25 best episodes of the series. Considering that there are 760 episodes to choose from, this was ... a challenge.

MK2 Films has acquired a collection of films and TV series directed by Bruno Dumont, the award-winning French director behind “Life of Jesus” and “Humanity.”
The acquisition, unveiled during Mipcom Cannes, covers the bulk of the director’s work, spanning eight films and TV series including “Li’l Quinquin,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. MK2 Films will represent rights to some of these titles, in France and/or international markets, apart from a few titles like “Slack Bay” whose global rights are still handled by Memento International.
“Bruno Dumont is, of course, a major figure of contemporary cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, MK2’s chairman of the executive board. Karmitz praised Dumont for the “originality of his unusual, unpredictable [films], veering from gravitas to some unnerving, comedic tangents.” He continued, “Iconoclastic and consistently courageous in its form, his work perfectly represents the free and ambitious cinema that we are proud to promote.

There is conventional wisdom that The Simpsons had a golden age. There’s no doubt seasons 3 through 9 were impeccable, but that doesn’t mean the next two decades were bad. The Simpsons necessarily experimented with its own format and evolved with the world. If you’ve spent the last 20 years lamenting that The Simpsons changed, you’re missing out on a lot of great comedy.

The Simpsons Season 34 Episode 13
The Simpsons presents one of its best secondary-character focused episodes with “The Many Saints of Springfield.” The pairing of Joe Mantegna’s Fat Tony and Harry Shearer’s Ned Flanders appears flagrantly contradictory, but it works for the same reason Season 33’s Fargo-influenced offering, “A Serious Flanders,” became a two-parter favorite: The enforced logic makes sense, the downward spiral is believable, and no character betray themselves. Though the circumstantial evidence does pile up under a fake mustache.
While in no way a mirror to The Sopranos prequel, “The Many Saints of Newark,” “The Many Saints of Springfield” maintains a beautifully consistent atmosphere of mob drama throughout. Even the opening couch gag is a yarn that spins masterfully dark, and ends on a note of threadbare terror. The dust bunnies are as harrowing as the vintage baseball card is enticing,...

In a season 8 episode of "The Simpsons," Bart and Lisa get to be part of a focus group for their favorite cartoon, "The Itchy and Scratchy Show." The people running the focus group are desperate to figure out why the show's ratings are going down even though kids still seem to like the recent episodes, and Lisa (the closest thing to the show's voice of reason) helpfully explains: "There's not really anything wrong with 'The Itchy and Scratchy Show,' it's as good as ever. But after so many years, the characters just can't have the same impact they once had."
If it wasn't clear already, this is the moment signaling that the characters aren't really talking about "Itchy and Scratchy," but about "The Simpsons" itself. Season 8 seems like an early season of the show today, but that's definitely not how it seemed at the time. Current co-showrunner Al Jean,...

One of the benefits of writing an animated sitcom like "The Simpsons" is that the characters don't age. And one of the downsides is ... the characters don't age. On one hand, the show hasn't had to struggle through many major status quo changes, like the kids going to college or grandpa passing away. But on the other hand, this also means the show has inevitably started running out of fresh storylines; it's been thirty-three years and Bart and Lisa are still going through the same elementary schoolkid problems, and Maggie's still forbidden from having her own compelling storylines on account of her age.
Classic live-action sitcom storylines, like the kids learning how to drive or having their first real relationship, are only possible in occasional one-off episodes taking place in the "Simpsons" future. We may get occasional glimpses of the family at later stages of their lives, but never anything longer than 22 minutes.

Tudum, meet Tud’oh! “The Simpsons” has gone “Simpflix” with the two-part episode “A Serious Flanders,” which executive producer Matt Selman calls a “dark, twisted ‘Fargo’ story.” Variety has an exclusive on the trailer that writer Cesar Mazariegos cut for the event; scroll down to watch.
According to Selman, “A Serious Flanders” was inspired by the TV adaptation of “Fargo,” which he finally caught up on. That, and the continued rise of prestige premium drama on cable and streaming, let to the idea of how “The Simpsons” might parody the space.
Mazariegos wrote the two-parter, which even relies on guest voices from that world: “Succession” star Brian Cox guest stars in “A Serious Flanders,” along with Cristin Milioti (“Fargo”), Timothy Olyphant (“Deadwood”), Chris O’Dowd (“Get Shorty”) and Jessica Paré (“Mad Men”).

A Cannes Film Festival staple, Bruno Dumont returns to the competition for a fourth time with a media satire that was clearly for acquired tastes. Slack Bay (Ma Loute) was his last time in comp, and excluding his mini-series P’tit Quinquin which shored up at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2014, he is best known for Camera d’Or winning La vie de Jésus (Directors’ Fortnight) 1999’s L’humanité (Grand Prix and a double Best Performance prize for his non-professional actors) and 2006’s Flandres.

When Disney Plus launched with all of “The Simpsons” episodes, the team behind the longest running primetime TV series in history were thrilled.
“It’s a perfect fit and, you know, 100 million subscribers,” says executive producer Al Jean with a chuckle.
But there was one catch: While Disney Plus has specific tiles on its home screen for Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars, “There’s no tile that actually says ‘The Simpsons,'” he says.
So co-creator and executive producer James L. Brooks suggested “The Simpsons” should invade the rest of Disney Plus, through a series of crossover short films.

Among the projects selected are “I Love My Guodoheaddji,” set in the Arctic Circle within Norway’s Sámi community; “I Matter,” about a Romany community in Romania, and “A Song That Slays,” set in a Pokot tribe in Kenya. Other projects explore a cult in Czech Republic (“Goddess), sex addiction in Lithuania (Sofia’s World), and Celtic tales (“Birds of a Feather…).

The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 9
The Simpsons season 32, episode 9, “Sorry Not Sorry,” teaches a valuable lesson for a hack comedy cartoon: when apologies don’t work, enforce bribery. While the payoff gives us something less than a pre-Christmas miracle, but goes very far in redeeming the episode from a traditional copout. The teachers at Springfield Elementary are big dumb jerks, and Miss Hoover is one of the biggest. She is also one of its least visible, so it is good to see her featured,...
