Paramount Pictures is returning to the dark, gloomy well first spotted in 2002’s The Ring for its third instalment in the franchise, Rings. Described in a recent report as a “prequel” to the events of the two pre-existing movies, each starring Naomi Watts as an intrepid journalist, the movie has since gone on to secure its male lead. Fresh from filming Ya adaptation The 5th Wave alongside Chloe Grace Moretz, Alex Roe is now locked in to star.
Roe is the second cast member to board Rings, which hails from F. Javier Gutierrez (formerly attached to helm the new Crow reboot). He joins leading lady Matilda Lutz and presumably an unannounced youngster tasked with crawling around in dingy wells and crawling out of television sets.
Roe and Lutz will play a teenage couple with Roe’s character set to give his girlfriend the cold shoulder after she forces him to watch the tape.

It’s a fate worse than any Blockbuster late fee from back in the day: if you watch the tape, you die one week later at the hands of Samara Morgan, the black-haired ghost girl who needs no help getting out of the well she calls home. Though the 2002 American remake of 1998's Ringu unveiled some of Samara's backstory (in addition to the 2005 sequel, The Ring Two), there's still much more to explore about the adopted girl in the well, and Paramount is looking to to shed light on the murky horrors of Samara's past with Rings, the upcoming third entry in The Ring remake franchise that's slated for release late this year. Pre-production on the movie recently kicked off in Atlanta, and director F. Javier Gutiérrez shared some photos that give us new glimpses of the black-haired terror from the TV screen and much more.

Deadline is reporting a bit of musical chairs with some release dates for some upcoming entries in horror franchises from Paramount Pictures including Friday the 13th, Paranormal Activity & a new entry in The Ring franchise. Read on, dear reader. Read on.
Something that should come as no surprise, considering very little information has come out from the production, the latest entry for Friday the 13th franchise will no longer be coming out on November 13, 2015. The entry now has a May 13, 2016 date – priming it up for Summer. Outside of having David Bruckner being announced as the director and the fact that Paramount wants to go a found-footage route, which gives further reason why Bruckner is the director, there is no information if this is a sequel, reboot or a remake of the original film.

Last July, it was revealed that F. Would you live in a house that looks like it was inspired by Middle Earth? I totally would, and I’m the perfect size too! This Hobbit looking house was designed by Disney artist Joseph Lawrence and it predates the Lord of the Rings films. Regardless of that fact, the house still has that comforting Shire feel to it, and it's currently up for rent! Here’s some information on the house from Craigslist:

We're just mere weeks away from seeing Michael Bay's vision of the heroes on the half shell fully realized in their fifth big-screen outing (it opens August 8), but we do know Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has something to do with a villain named Shredder and the four deadly turtles who need to take him down with help from journalist April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and her wisecracking cameraman (Will Arnett). Here, Megan Fox describes being a Lord of the Rings nut--and why if anyone was to discover Bigfoot out in the woods, she'd be the one. Go on, you know you want to see this. Director Jonathan Liebesman

Will Arnett and the Mannequin Formerly Known As Megan Fox took some time to chat with MTV about the upcoming Jonathan Liebesman-directed reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Amongst the topics covered were fan concerns that certain franchise staples weren't going to be featured prominently in the new film- a fear created by the seeming lack of these staples in promotional materials so far.
But rest assured, Tmnt fans, according to Arnett there will be plenty of time spent on key aspects of the Turtles mythology. He says there'll be pizza, there'll be Master Splinter, and more.
"Absolutely, Splinter is crucial. That all-wise giant rat is very important to the story. There is time in the sewers. There is time in the lair. There’s all of it. I think we’ve done a really good job in staying true to the mythology and then telling a new story,...

Although it's our job to highlight the shiny new crowdfunding projects that emerge onto the internet each week in this post, it's heart warming to see some of the items we've covered in the past get the funding they require.
Some of you may recall that games industry legend Mel Croucher was looking for an entirely reasonable £9,800 to complete his sequel to the eccentric 80s oddity Deus Ex Machina, which would again tell Shakespeare's seven ages of man using graphics, weird sounds and the voice of Christopher Lee.
We were pleased to see that Deus Ex Machina 2 managed to exceed its goal recently, and with four days to go at the time of writing, has managed to amass just under £11,000 - not bad for a niche project based in the UK,...

The recent announcement that Megan Fox will be playing April O’Neil in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film caused the internet to do that thing it does whenever Michael Bay’s name is mentioned. While I love bellowing, I’m not really going to get into that today, as it seems like the thing people are most angry is about is Michael Bay’s face and I don’t really have a problem with it. I think his face is all right.
What I will mention, though, is my surprise that they didn’t cast someone made entirely out of Lego bricks.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Lego has just come out, and goodness me, it’s great.

While Michael Bay was filming Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, he said it would be his last Transformers movie. Shortly after the movie was released he was signed on to direct a fourth one, so why did he change his mind and what is he planning for it? In a recent interview with The Huffington Post he explains,
I thought I was done. Then the ride came out and the two-and-a-half-hour lines. And then you're thinking, 'Oh my God, someone's going to take this over?' And you start doing a lot of soul-searching… I'm thinking that if I do this last one, we set it on a new footing and we change a lot of things, but we keep the history of the three in place. But we broaden it so it can be set up and be carried on -- it would have a better chance for survival,...

Chicago – I have a certain begrudging affection for Gore Verbinski’s 2002 remake of Hideo Nakata’s 1998 thriller, “Ringu,” despite the fact that I know in my heart of hearts that it doesn’t really work. Verbinski’s film falters precisely when it should be at its scariest, and yet it still has enough memorably eerie moments to inspire at least a couple sleepless nights.
It kicked off a series of increasingly inept American remakes of Asian horror films, quickly turning their once frightening motifs into self-satirizing clichés. Many Hollywood filmmakers fail to conjure the sense of brooding unease that allows surrealistic imagery to work its spell. Inexplicable puddles of water, pale-faced victims and a vengeful apparition in a white robe are all expected tropes of the genre, and they were all put to exceedingly powerful use in “Ringu.” It’s the apparition’s face hidden behind a thick mat of...

For a sequel bursting and ablaze with special effects and offering far better 3D this time around – as it wasn’t done haphazardly in post production, director Jonathan Liebesman’s take on Greek mythology is surprisingly bland. Unfortunately for him, it’s a combination of bland script and even blander lead in Sam Worthington. Worthington is like the Nigel Mansell of the acting world; performing adequately and a rather likeable chap but never setting the world (or screen) alight.
It’s as though Liebesman relies heavily on his effects to inject excitement into Wrath of the Titans as the rest is a confusing and often eye-torturous visual muddle that smacks of the hell-fire visuals of Lord of the Rings – and you expect Frodo to pop up at any second and save the day too.

Five years ago, it may have seemed like director Jonathan Liebesman was destined to be stuck doing horror movies after directing Darkness Falls , the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel and the short film "Rings" (bridging the gap between The Ring and its sequel). He even directed a smaller horror movie called The Killing Room , which debuted at Sundance in 2009. None of those things could have prepared anyone for what Liebesman could do when put in charge of a larger scale movie like last year's Battle: Los Angeles , which pitted a platoon of Marines against an alien invasion. Just over a year later and Liebesman is at the helm of Wrath of the Titans , the sequel to the 2010 blockbuster remake which is just as big as Battle: La in terms of action and...

During a conference call to shareholders on Monday, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner said they were in “active discussions” with Paramount Pictures, producer Steven Spielberg, and director Michael Bay to make another Transformers movie.
Variety is reporting the plan is to make Transformers 4 and a Transformers 5, back-to-back. Series screenwriter Ehren Kruger reportedly has ideas on how to continue the movie franchise (of course he does), but Bay previously said he was done directing Transformers and Shia Labeouf declared TF3 his last. So that leaves… Rosie Huntington-Whiteley? Oddly enough, her boyfriend Jason Statham, has been “bandied about” to star, though no formal offers have been made.
It’s certainly not a surprise Paramount and Hasbro are pushing for more sequels (though Statham’s potential involvement comes as a bit of a shock). The third film made $1.12 billion at the global box office, making it the fourth highest-grossing film in history (without adjustments for inflation,...

Every so often, the epic comes back into fashion. Its first big cycle was in the 50s when studios wanted a way to combat the rise of television so they made huge films which could only be experienced by leaving your sofa and popping into the nearest picture theatre. A more recent cycle started with the release of Gladiator and peaked with Lord of the Rings. That was thanks to advancing digital effects which meant that armies could be populated with CGI people/monsters instead of money-gobbling extras.
Now it seems the epic may be back with a vengeance as Warner Bros is set to make a film of Gaius Julius Caesar’s rise as ruler of the Roman Empire. Warner Bros hopes to get a big name star to play the title role and will leave open the possibility of a sequel in which we see Caesar’s fall.

Michael Bay: Today I’m going to show you our trailer. You’re the first to see it. I’m going to show you some 2D stuff and then 3D. You’ll probably ask why is it not all 3D? Because we don’t cut in 3D. The systems’ just not compatible and it’s just way too much information for the computers to hold. People don’t understand about 3D. You shoot it on 3D cameras and it’s like it just doesn’t come out beautiful 3D. There’s a lot of issues with it because there are two cameras,...

Battle: Los Angeles
Directed by Jonathan Liebesman
Written by Christopher Bertolini
2011, USA
Before I attended the midnight screening of Battle : Los Angeles on the day of its release, the first couple of reviews had begun to trickle through onto IMDb from screenings earlier that day. One of them gave it a scathing 1/10 review, calling it the worst example of the evolution of Hollywood action-cinema. The other gifted it a very favourable 8/10 and called it a nigh-perfect blend of Cloverfield meets Independence Day and about as close as you’d ever want to get to being a marine in a real-life alien invasion.
So the lofty hopes instilled in me by that sensational initial teaser (scored gorgeously by Johann Johannsson’s heart-wrenching 2006 track ‘The Sun’s Gone Dim and the Sky’s Turned Black’) had now eroded to a cautious anticipation. But I’ve long awaited Director Jonathan Liebesman to...

This year the Oscars revelled in the luxurious Englishness of a film which started with an impertinent request to the royals and ended in the crowning of King Colin
Kirk Douglas's victory in the Most Noteworthy Moment category — easily trumping Melissa Leo's F-word sally — was a measure of how undramatic this year's Academy Awards were. The main event was predicted, though not precisely predictable; the success for The King's Speech covered most of the board while not going all the way across it: best film, best director, best original screenplay, best actor.
In a neurotic, not-wanting-to-jinx-it-for-them manner I had been predicting a sudden collapse for this film in all sections except Colin Firth's with a huge swing to The Social Network. That didn't happen. Instead, The King's Speech carried (almost) all before it. Even dark rumours about its historical inaccuracies, including an essay from Christopher Hitchens about...

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.
Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

While the splashy - and usually braindead - antics of filmmakers such as Michael Bay or Jerry Bruckheimer may garner a lion’s share of the media’s admittedly short attention span, there are dozens of other more quiet and intelligent films that are also deserving of our collective interest.
Case in point: Exam (review here) (available on Video on Demand from IFC starting July 23rd, 2010). Directed by veteran screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine and budgeted at approximately six hundred thousand dollars, this “job interview from Hell” story offers the discerning and patient viewer a compelling platform from which it addresses a myriad of issues - ambition, drive, morality, ethics, and the lengths that some people will go to get ahead - as well as an eye-catching and inventive storytelling paradigm.

#1: RZA talks “Iron Fist”
We already knew that multi-talented artist RZA was writing and directing a martial arts genre mash-up titled Iron Fist. Admittedly around these parts we’re pretty big fans of RZA and excited to see what he’s got to offer but if this recent interview with La Times is any indication, there’s good reason for it too. In the mix is Tarantino who appears to be a great influence to the musician turned director, Eli Roth who, love him or hate him, knows what he’s doing, and Jim Jarmusch. Can’t wait until we finally have some footage.
#2: ”Damn Nation” adaptation in the works
Comic book adaptation aren’t going away. Thankfully for us the studios are starting to dig through some of the fringe titles. The newest kid on the block is Andrew Cosby’s “Damn Nation,” which takes place in...

With HeyUGuys recently posting the Top films of the Decade as voted by you the reader, I thought I would look back into noughties myself and do my own top 10 films of the last decade as I was a bit disappointed with a majority of the top 10 choices like Kill Bill, There will be Blood and Donnie Darko.
Searching for my Decadian film winners was a great experience, going through vast amount of films from the last 10 years (which has flown by) and picking my personal 10 favourite films. It was a difficult challenge choosing them and also coming up with my 10 runner up movies from each year as there were so many quality films to pick from and I had to make some difficult choices in letting some stunning films miss out like Children of Men, District 9, Hurt Locker, Let the Right one in, The Departed etc. And so here are my choices,...

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.
Originally published, 10/25/2002
What were the chances?
The Ring at first seemed like one of the least promising projects of the Halloween film season: A U.S. remake of a Japanese cult classic that hasn’t been given a chance to prove itself Stateside, directed by a filmmaker whose résumé is made up of comedies. Yet The Ring stacks up as the most satisfying studio horror film of the fall season. Unlike, for handy example, Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon, Gore Verbinski’s movie honors its predecessor and recaptures what made it so effective while also giving the material its own stylistic identity, and adding new material that doesn’t compromise the whole or feel gratuitous.
The U.S. Ring has as spare a mood as the original,...
