Ralphie's apartment was actually a loft in Downtown Los Angeles.
The film was partly filmed in Los Angeles, while most exterior and other interior shots were filmed on location in New York City.
The film was intended to have a theatrical release, but no distributors picked it up for distribution before it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006. The film then went straight to video and made its debut the next year.
Jane Lynch, who plays Darren's mom who thinks he's gay, is herself gay in real life.
He doesn't mention it in the film, but Darren is from North Carolina; it's indicated by the license plate on the taxi that was parked in his family's driveway as he is about to return to New York.
