Director René Clément brings an entertainingly eccentric David Goodis crime story to the screen in high style. A big score is being prepped by an odd gang, played by a terrific lineup of talent: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray, Lea Massari and the elusive Tisa Farrow. Only partly an action thriller, this one is weird but good — lovers of hardboiled crime stories can’t go wrong. Studiocanal has restored the original version, a full forty minutes longer than what was briefly shown here.

On 14 April 1940, W. Ray Johnston, the President of Monogram Pictures Corporation, was resting at the Baker Hotel in Dallas, Texas. On the following day he was to meet with Mpc’s company shareholders in the hotel’s ballroom. The New York Herald Tribune would report that Monogram, later lovingly christened the most famous of Hollywood’s “Poverty Row” studios, was to announce their ambitious 1940-1941 program of fifty films: twenty-six features and twenty-four westerns. One of the films announced for imminent production was The Ape, an adaptation of the Adam Hull Shirk 1927 stage play.
Johnston announced that big screen’s preeminent boogeyman, Boris Karloff, was to star in their horror new vehicle. Karloff would be cast as an obsessed scientist driven to madness and murder in pursuit of an otherwise noble goal. For Karloff’s fans, there was something familiar with this scenario.

The death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput is still under investigation, with new developments cropping up every day. Meanwhile, several filmmakers have announced projects based on the life and death of the late actor.
The situation reminds us of the fact that Bollywood is always quick to capture a slice of reality for its fiction screen.
Looking at the real life deaths and/or crime for screenplays is not a new trend, with films like "Talvar", "Black Friday", "No One Killed Jessica", and "Main Aur Charles" being but a few cases in point. But the race to get the titles registered for an incident that is still under investigation is unprecedented.
This year, the death of Bollywood star Sushant and its twists and turns has not only gripped the attention of the people, but filmmakers as well. Another high profile incident that the makers are looking with keen interest is...

Quentin Tarantino appeared on The Ringer’s “Rewatchables” podcast at the start of 2020 and revealed that Chris Pine is “hands down my favorite” actor of his generation. It turns out the “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill” director’s love for Pine extends to Pine’s family tree. Pine’s grandmother is Anne Gwynne, the American actress who starred in dozens of films throughout the 1940s. Gwynne’s credits include Westerns such as “Men of Texas” and “Ride ‘Em Cowboy,” plus a string of horror movies like “Black Friday” and “House of Frankenstein.” Tarantino happens to be a Gwynne super-fan.
“I’ve been to the Academy Awards a couple of times and I always take my mom and we have a great old time and laugh a bunch and she holds all the Power Bars,” Pine said on the first episode of J. Claude Deering’s new podcast, adding that he...

It’s officially “Autumn Sweater” season — both the garment and the 1997 Yo La Tengo song. So to celebrate, Boston’s Palehound unveiled a pitch-perfect cover of the shaker-laden track.

Palehound’s Ellen Kempner has spent the past four years building up one of the most distinct styles in indie rock. Her songs often present a low-key front, but there’s a lot going on underneath her dreamy guitar parts and soft-edged vocals. Listen closely to “Cinnamon,” from 2015’s Dry Food, or “Turning 21,” from 2017’s A Place I’ll Always Go and you’ll register vivid hues of desire and loss just under the surface.
“Aaron,” from Palehound’s just-announced album Black Friday (out June 7th), is another understated stunner.

After enjoying the $20.4M No. one box office opening of The Upside starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, STXfilms is putting two more Kevin Hart comedy projects into its development pipeline. This comes after Deadline exclusively reported last week on Hart’s next film, Fatherhood which he will do for Sony after he completes his reprisal role in Sony’s sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Stx Entertainment announced that it will partner with HartBeat Productions to produce two new comedy projects with an eye for Hart to star in both. This comes after Stx approached Hart and Hartbeat Productions’ President of Film/TV John Cheng with two separate pitches, the first titled Black Friday which is described as “a body switching comedy based on a story by Doan La.” The second is an untitled, international romantic comedy which is currently looking for a writer.

Kevin Hart is partnering with STXfilms to produce on a pair of comedy movies through his HartBeat Productions with an eye to star in both projects, Variety has learned exclusively.
The announcement comes on the heels of Hart’s solid box office performance in “The Upside,” in which he co-stars with Bryan Cranston. Stx’s comedic drama, co-produced with Lantern Entertainment, topped expectations by opening in first place at the North American box office and has generated $47 million in its first 11 days of release.
“Stx came in to make ‘The Upside’ the success it is. Their strategy, execution and collaborative approach are perfectly aligned with HartBeat Productions’ values,” said Hart. “It was an easy ‘yes’ when they pitched us two new ideas to produce together.”

If you weren’t aware of manufacturer Anda Seat‘s prior history with developing car seats for racing enthusiasts, it becomes more clear when you first feast your eyes on one of their high-end gaming chairs. While the company has been around since 2007, they’ve spent close to a decade tinkering and fine-tuning their design process in order to move into the world gaming. Having hit North America last year, their catalog of products is filled with a bevy of sleek (and sometimes colorful) chairs, all with names that would slide right into your favorite fantasy series.
I’ve spent the last month and change with one particular chair — the Anda Seat Dark Wizard, which caters to big and tall gaming enthusiasts such as myself. I’m happy to say that Anda Seat delivers on their promise of high-quality products that both look and feel the part.
For those worrying that setup would be difficult,...

Alec Baldwin did not appear as Donald Trump in this week’s “SNL” cold open after the news about how he may or may not have punched someone over a parking spot, but the show still mentioned him during a parody of Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show with “SNL” regular Kate McKinnon as the much-boycotted host.
Appearing on this fake version of “Ingraham Angle” were Cecily Strong as Judge Jeanine Pirro and Kenan Thompson as David Clarke.
Throughout the sketch, the three characters would try to drum up fear about the immigrant caravan in Mexico slowly making its way to the southern United States border by showing alleged footage of the caravan that actually was something else entirely. Like a mob of Black Friday shoppers, zombies from the movie “World War Z” and a mass of crabs scrambling around on a beach.
McKinnon’s Ingraham also paused frequently to thank her few remaining sponsors,...

With “Narcos” and “McMafia” riding high, a new Indian production company from renowned investigative journalist and crime writer Hussain Zaidi is looking to bring the next wave of true-crime-inspired TV drama to international screens. Zaidi has teamed with Mumbai-based distributor GoQuest Media to launch Golden Pen, a new banner that will work up crime series for the global market.
Zaidi is a renowned writer on crime and notably the Mumbai mafia. His work has been cited by “McMafia” writer Misha Glenny, and his book “Black Friday” was adapted for the big screen.
Golden Pen’s founders told Variety they founded the shingle to create crime thrillers with an Indian dimension, but intended for the world. “It was driven by trends in the entertainment industry in terms of what type of content [is in demand], and where content is travelling,” said Vivek Lath, managing director, GoQuest. “The indications were clear; there was a large...

CHENNAI, India -- Director Anurag Kashyap's first two films -- Paanch (Five) and Black Friday -- ran into massive problems with the Indian movie censors. The first was denied a certificate on six grounds, including abusive language and glorification of violence. His second feature made in early 2000 on the police investigations after the Mumbai serial blasts of 1993 was not permitted to screen for a couple of years because of the sensitive nature of its subject. When Black Friday finally opened last year, it got rave reviews.
Scripting his latest movie, No Smoking, Kashyap must have realized that open confrontation with the authorities does not quite pay. So he plays around with words and actions, and presents what seems like a strong indictment of cigarette smoking. But scratch this layer, and what unfolds is quite another thing. No Smoking is experimental in its color tones and editing, but the picture is unlikely to get into the commercial circuit. It will possibly fare very well in festivals and should attract critical attention.
Kashyap, who is better known in Indian cinema circles as a writer (he penned the dialogues for Deepa Mehta's Water among others), portrays K (model-turned-actor John Abraham) as an arrogant, insensitive executive, whose chain smoking habit irks his pretty wife, Anjali, (Ayesha Takia). When she can take it no more, she enlists the help of a detoxification center, run by an autocratic guru, Shri Shri Prakash Guru Ghantal Baba Bangali Sealdah Wale (Paresh Rawal).
What begins as an anti-smoking program soon slips into another level where we see a clash between K and Baba Bangali, both despots with different styles. The Baba, for instance, employs a host of women in his office whose freedom he curbs by asking them to wear veils, although they are not Muslims. While he tries to de-poison K through arm-twisting , and politico-religious methods, K loathes the idea of giving up his right to puff into people's faces.
Abraham gives a solid performance as a conceited man helplessly caught in the web of the guru, essayed with verve by Rawal. These characterizations reflect the state of autocracy and fanaticism -- driven by money, politics and religion -- that prevails in some sections of Indian society. No Smoking ultimately is less about nicotine and more about manipulating the human being.
However, the film fails to entertain in the conventional sense of the term, and often feels like a documentary. The games that K and Baba play to outwit each other may tire audiences. Sometimes, sadistic violence is used to arm twist K. But why must K submit to this? There is no clear explanation.

IFFLA leads off with 'Water'
NEW DELHI -- The fourth annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles will take place April 19-23 at ArcLight Cinemas, opening with Canada-based Indian director Deepa Mehta's Water. Water ran into trouble when its India shooting schedule was disrupted by protestors in 2000, which lead to the production moving to Sri Lanka. The story revolves around the plight of widows in the holy city of Benaras. The film has not yet been released in India, though it was screened at the Kerala Film Festival in South India early this year. Last year, Indian director Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday won the IFFLA jury prize. The film was banned in India due to its controversial portrayal of the 1993 serial bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai and sparked bloody riots. In an interview Saturday, IFFLA organizer Christina Marouda said IFFLA "believes in these filmmakers, and we are dedicated to providing a platform for these films which, if it weren't for festivals like ours, would not have an outlet to be seen and appreciated. Such filmmakers need support and we are dedicated to supporting them."...
