Pyaar Ka Saaya review :
Two films inspired from the same Hollywood source Ghost (1990) released back to back at the same main theatre Minerva (Mumbai) in December 1991and met with somewhat similar fate at the ticket counters. Maa performed better than Pyaar Ka Saaya but still both couldn't qualify as a hit of that year.
Pyaar Ka Saaya was almost a frame by frame remake of Ghost with even the iconic clay moulding scene replicated for the Hindi audience. Produced by B Subhash, it had Rahul Roy and Sheeba as the newly wedded couple whose life is destroyed after Rahul is stabbed to death by a goon. Amrita Singh played Whoopi Goldberg's role of a medium who can communicate with the dead. Her brilliant performance earned her a Filmfare award nomination that year. Rahul and Sheeba sizzled together in Nadeem Shravan's melodious songs. Even Avtaar Gill left a mark in one scene he got. Since it was a cut copy paste job of Ghost, the critics trashed the film and even the audience gave it a thanda response.
I prefer Pyaar Ka Saaya than Maa as I had a crush on the sexy Sheeba at that time (my school days, tee hee!!) and saw the film multiple times on VHS just for her. Till date, I own a DVD of this B Subhash bomb (pun intended).
