Alex Randal (Stephen Moyer), a young reporter on the make, decides, without knowing anything about the situation, to go to Beirut on October 23, 1983, when he hears a radio report about suicide trucks exploding on both an American base and a French base, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of soldiers. Seduced by a gifted and enigmatic photographer, Julia Muller (Anne Parillaud), Randal finds a capitol torn by civil war, where political, financial and strategic interests intertwine.

Watchable, conventional, intelligent thriller

A Newsday reporter finds love and adventure in 1980's besieged Beirut.

The film is set in Beirut in the 80s, immediately following the bombing of the US marine base and the French paras. An ambitious young journalist is stuck in Paris doing a boring job trailing celebrities round nightclubs, and sees his chance to get in on the action. Within hours he lands in a totally convincing Beirut, where he is bottom dog in the press pack. He meets a beautiful French photographer (as you do), who feeds him an amazing scoop. His first story hits the front page, but 24 hours later, it turns out to be a dud, and to have cost dozens of lives. Less trustful, he tracks the French beauty to her den, gets another scoop (which he checks more carefully) but before he can release it, realises it will probably cost his life and hers too, so he gives the story to the man whose job he stole and flies off into the sunset. Breakneck speed, cynical intelligent script, and excellent acting and setting make the whole thing plausible and enjoyable. Why can&#39;t it get a distributor in the UK?

Deadlines

The start of the movie is a bit unclear, but the war situation that follows is clear enough. The fact that everybody acts according to his or her own personal agenda gives an interesting story: trust no one, not even the ones you can trust. Shows the absurdity of the press shooting pictures of soldiers shooting people.

I absolutely LOVED this film. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The story and direction are excellent. Michael Lerner is a true talent! It is very interesting to learn about what happened in Beirut at this time, and also what it is like for reporters who dive into the action. The story is fascinating and very apropos to recent world events in the Middle East. The acting(especially Anne Parillaud) and editing(the fabulous Suzanne Neff) superb. The locations are fantastic. It is very hard to believe that this wasn&#39;t shot in war torn Beirut. The cast too were very believable-wonderful character actors from all over the world. I highly recommend seeing this film.
