In a preview from his conversation with Willie Geist for Sunday Today, Chris Pine looked back at how much his role as Anne Hathaway’s love interest in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement impacted his career.

Pine recalled the exact moment he got the life-changing call saying he had been cast as Nicholas Devereaux. He was on the freeway, driving his 1972 BMW that he owned since he was 16, at a time in his life when he had only booked small TV roles.

“I got a call from my agent saying I booked the job, and I pulled over to the side of the freeway, and they said, ‘You’re getting paid $65,000,'” said the actor. “It was like they had just told me I’d make $15 million.”

Pine shared that getting the call was “absolutely earth-shattering” as he was severely struggling financially. “I had an overdraft on my bank account.

Chris Pine has been making us swoon since he first burst onto the scene in the 2006 romantic comedy "Just My Luck," but his very first TV appearance actually happened when he was just 3 years old. In case you weren't aware, Chris's dad is none other than Robert Pine - the actor who famously played Sgt. Joseph Getraer on NBC's "CHiPs" in the late '70s and early '80s - and in 1983, Chris joined his dad on the show as a boy named Christopher. The two teamed up for an adorable duet of "Hurry, Hurry Climb the Ladder" and melted hearts everywhere.

Ukrainian industry players gathered in Cannes are determined to show they can provide a variety of new content, as well as stories that look beyond the current Russian invasion.

“I have been repeating this since 2014 — it’s a trap to be only associated with war,” says producer Julia Sinkevych, now behind Marysia Nikitiuk’s upcoming feature “Lucky Girl.”

Presented at the Cannes Market as part of the Ukrainian Features Preview, it shows a successful TV star who has everything, until she is diagnosed with cancer.

Blood doesn’t mean anything once fame and fortune enter the fray because outside interests will begin to whisper and divide until the world discovers two halves aren’t quite as good as the whole. That’s not saying Noel’s High Flying Birds or Liam’s Beady Eye are bad. They’ve both created some good music post-break-up, but neither reached the heights Oasis had. The former’s music and latter’s voice built something that could only exist with the two brothers working together. After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

The Cannes Film Marché has unveiled the full lineup of its Ukraine in Focus program which will provide Ukrainian filmmakers and producers with networking, pitching and co-financing opportunities over two days during the Cannes Film Festival, on May 21 and 22.

Under the program, key market initiatives such as Goes to Cannes, Cannes Docs Showcase and the Producers Network will be skewed towards projects and executives from Ukraine in order to support the country which was invaded by Russia on Feb. 24 and has been at war since then. Deadline first reported the news that Cannes was planning a focus on Ukraine program.

The Producers’ Network, organized in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute, will include six producers, including Denis Ivanov from Arthouse Traffic, Darya Bassel from Moon Man, Natalia Libet from Digital Religion, Sashko Chubko from Pronto Film, Olga Beskhmelnytsina from Esse Production House and Vladimir Yatsenko from ForeFilms.

April is here and that means there’s a whole slew of new releases headed to Hulu to meet your streaming needs.

In the realm of original films, Hulu has the queer rom-com “Crush,” starring Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho, which debuts April 29. Meanwhile, new library arrivals this month include the Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sci-fi mind-bender “Looper,” both “Shrek” and “Shrek 2,” and all four films in “The Twilight Saga.”

April is also a big month for new TV shows on Hulu. Andrew Garfield’s hot streak continues with the FX drama “Under the Banner of Heaven,” which debuts exclusively on Hulu April 28. For reality TV fans, “The Kardashians” premieres on April 14. Hulu also has two franchise spinoff kids shows returning with Season 7 of “Madagascar: A Little Wild” on April 4 and Season 2 of “The Croods: Family Tree” on April 5.

Lucky Girl, the film she is producing, was in the final touches of post-production when the Russian invasion stopped the Ukrainian creative industry in its tracks and Sinkevych initially thought she wouldn’t be able to make the trip to Series Mania when she was handed the presidency in what was a beautiful show of solidarity.

“This is a different life,” Sinkevych told Deadline during this week’s event.

South Korean indie studio More In Group is using Hong Kong FilMart to launch its new feature film project “19 39.”

Director Park Jae-ho is setting a quick turnaround for the comedy-drama movie which has not yet been filmed, but which he plans to release in summer this year.

The story, written by Kim Min-Jung transports five 39-year-old women back to their childhoods, to experience high school and first love. Their happy memories contrast with present day reality as women on the cusp of middle age. The clash forces them to reflect on the true meaning of love and friendship.

(A similar theme is explored in current Jtbc-Netflix series “Thirty Nine” with three women all age 39 who juggle work, life and relationships. It was also previously explored in 2011 hit film “Sunny”.)

The Co-Founder of the Ukrainian Film Academy has been named Jury President for this year’s Series Mania.

Julia Sinkevych will judge the annual event’s International Competition, joining a jury featuring German actor Christian Berkel, Israeli actress Shira Haas (Unorthodox), Turkish creator and director Berkun Oya (Bir Baskadir) and French singer-songwriter and model Yseult.

French writer/director Marc Dugain has been appointed Vice-President as Sinkevych’s presence at the Lille event next month is uncertain.

The tireless Sinkevych is the Co-Founder of the Ukrainian Film Academy and a member of the European Film Academy.

From 2010 to 2020, she worked as General Producer of Odessa International Film Festival, one of the biggest audience film festivals in Eastern Europe.

She is also a producer and is currently working on feature films Lucky Girl by Marysia Nikitiuk and Lesia by Nana Janelidze. Past credits include Vitaly Mansky’s Close Relations and Nadia Parfan’s Heatsingers.

Ukrainian film producer and co-founder of the Ukrainian Film Academy Julia Sinkevych (“Heat Singers”) has been selected as jury president for this year’s Series Mania Festival and its international competition.

“She has always been committed to supporting Ukrainian artists and the culture of her country from Kyiv, where she lives,” the festival said in a statement. “As her presence in Lille is not certain at this point in time, renowned French writer and director Marc Dugain, has been appointed as vice-president of this year’s jury.”

“Los Espookys” co-creator Julio Torres has signed a two-year first-look deal with HBO and HBO Max.

Torres has two new projects already in development under the pact, “Little Films” (working title) and “Lucky,” the former of which he’s set to star in and is produced by Emma Stone.

In “Little Films,” which has a production commitment at HBO, the former “Saturday Night Live” writer stars as himself. The potential show follows this version of Torres as he tells the tale of when he lost a golden oyster. The people he encounters as he searches for it and the musings he has along the way become points of departure for little films, as Julio navigates weaving in and out of these introspective, often eerie comedic stories.

Former Saturday Night Live writer Julio Torres, co-creator and star of HBO’s Los Espookys, has signed a first-look deal with HBO and HBO Max. Under the two-year pact, he has two half-hour comedies in the works: Little Films (working title), written, executive produced and headlined by Torres, which has received a series order by HBO; and Lucky, co-written and executive produced by Torres, which is in development at HBO.

The deal expands on Torres’ existing relationship with HBO stemming from the Spanish-language comedy Los Espookys, which also streams on HBO Max. The series, which has been renewed for a second season, was created by and stars Torres, Fred Armisen and Ana Fabrega who also.

“Saturday Night Live” writer and stand-up comic Julio Torres, who also created and stars in “Los Espookys,” has signed a two-year, first-look deal with HBO.

A half-hour series, which has the working title of “Little Films,” and a production commitment, will be produced by Emma Stone and husband Dave McCary, who’ll also direct, the cabler said Thursday. The pair, who first met on a 2016 “SNL” sketch written by Torres, previously produced his A24 directorial debut through their Fruit Tree banner. “Untitled Julio Torres Project,” in which the comedian stars alongside Tilda Swinton, RZA, and Isabella Rossellini, is in post-production.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.

Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

A new documentary will chronicle the wrongful rape conviction of Anthony Broadwater.

From Red Badge Films and Red Hawk Films, “Unlucky” will follow the story about the Syracuse man who spent more than 16 years in prison, and another 20 being labeled as a registered sex offender, before being exonerated of the 1981 rape of best-selling author Alice Sebold.

Sebold wrote about the rape in her 1999 novel “Lucky,” based on her sexual assault as a freshman at Syracuse University. In the book, she details her experiences in overcoming trauma by helping convict the man she believed attacked her.

Broadwater was absolved of his rape conviction last week. A film adaptation of “Lucky” played a part in proving his innocence once Timothy Mucciante, an executive producer on the movie, left the project after raising concerns about discrepancies between the book and the screenplay.

Alice Sebold has apologized to Anthony Broadwater after he was wrongfully convicted of raping her in 1981. The Lovely Bones author, who wrote about her sexual assault in the book Lucky, issued a public statement to Medium on Tuesday, Nov. 30, a week after a New York State Supreme Court Justice exonerated the 61-year-old. Broadwater served 16 years in prison and was released in 1998. Following his release, he was placed on New York's sex offender registry. Alice Sebold, the author of bestselling book “The Lovely Bones” and memoir “Lucky,” has apologized to Anthony Broadwater, the man she misidentified as her rapist 40 years ago.

In a Medium post, she wrote, “First, I want to say that I am truly sorry to Anthony Broadwater and I deeply regret what you have been through. I am sorry most of all for the fact that the life you could have led was unjustly robbed from you, and I know that no apology can change what happened to you and never will.”

Broadwater was exonerated of his rape conviction last week after an executive producer on the movie adaptation of “Lucky” left the project when he began to raise concerns about the events surrounding the trial.

Sebold wrote that “As a traumatized 18-year-old rape victim, I chose to put my faith in the American legal system. My goal in 1982 was justice — not to perpetuate injustice.

Author Alice Sebold publicly apologized Tuesday to the man who was exonerated last week in the 1981 rape that was the basis for her memoir Lucky and said she was struggling with the role she played “within a system that sent an innocent man to jail.”

Anthony Broadwater, 61, was convicted in 1982 of raping Sebold when she was a student at Syracuse University. He served 16 years in prison. His conviction was overturned Nov. 22 after prosecutors reexamined the case and determined there were serious flaws in his arrest and trial.

“Lucky,” the film project adapted from Alice Sebold’s 1999 memoir toplined by “You” star Victoria Pedretti, has been abandoned, Variety has learned.

The movie was dropped after losing its financing months ago, according to a source close to the production. Pedretti is also no longer involved.

In “Lucky,” Sebold depicts being viciously beaten and raped by a stranger during her freshman year at Syracuse University in 1981, and explores how this trauma shaped the rest of her life. On Wednesday, a New York Times article detailed how executive producer Timothy Mucciante raised concerns about the events in the book and left the project.
