With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”
And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

Warning: contains spoilers for Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 (and – curveball – The Shield pilot).
The act of compiling a list of moments such as these – trawling through memories, devouring fan-sites, gorging on clips – really hammers home the joy of being a Game of Thrones fan. Whatever you thought of the latter seasons, or how the show ended, it’s impossible to recall certain moments from the fierce and frantic, frenetic, kinetic, splenetic, sprawling, sword-and-sorrow-soaked timeline without some part of you screaming: ‘Again! Again!’
The selection criteria here isn’t random, but neither is it scientific. The final results and rankings lay no claim to definitiveness. How could they? Whittling this list down to a mere 100 moments would’ve been tough. This is where you come in. If you feel that your favourite scene or iconic moment is conspicuous by its absence, then fly to the comments section and help us...

“Death is like going on a trip, darling, only one doesn’t come back.”
Mario Bava’s final horror film Shock (1977) will be available on Blu-ray January 18th from Arrow Video
In a career spanning four decades and encompassing virtually every genre under the sun, Mario Bava inspired multiple generations of filmmakers, from Dario Argento to Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Best remembered for his gothic horror movies, for his final feature, Shock, he eschewed the grand guignol excesses of Black Sabbath or Blood and Black Lace for a more intimate portrait of mental breakdown in which true horror comes from within.
Dora moves back into her old family home with her husband, Bruno, and Marco, her young son from her previous marriage. But domestic bliss proves elusive as numerous strange and disturbing occurrences transpire, while Dora is haunted by a series of nightmares and hallucinations, many of them involving her dead former husband.

Professional athletes, having trained with laser-like focus on a single pursuit for most of their lives, are not always the most interesting people. Tennis provides a few exceptions. John McEnroe, Serena Williams, and Andre Agassi all sport personalities as explosive off court as they are (or were) on it. Roger Federer is known for being a gentleman. Gael Monfils, a Frenchman, has a certain je ne sais quoi. Most everyone else makes the commentators sing for their supper.
Naomi Osaka can be soft-spoken, though not when it comes to her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The 23-year-old has four Grand Slam titles to her name and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world in women’s singles. Being a little camera-shy has no bearing on her tennis, but it doesn’t make for great movie-making.

Naomi Osaka’s first Grand Slam victory was so dramatic as to feel like the scripted climax to a movie. In 2018, the rising tennis phenom faced Serena Williams, one of the greatest to have ever played the sport and one of her longtime idols, and won in straight sets. But when Osaka lifted her trophy, she was blinking back tears borne of a bittersweet frustration rather than the happiness she might have envisioned.
In that crucial second set, the chair umpire cautioned Williams three times for various nitpicked offenses. When Williams vociferously defended her honor by calling him “a thief,” he penalized her by forcing her to forfeit a game in Osaka’s favor. By the time Osaka was serving for the match, the buzzing tension hanging over the stadium was palpable through the millions of television screens showing the final around the world, and made plain on Osaka’s face.

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Samoa Joe returned last week to become William Regal’s enforcer. I had an enforcer once…Timmy The Crippled Cub Scout. Timmy took a bullet for me…after getting smashed with a hammer, hit by a truck, smacked by an elephant, shot out of a cannon and set on fire…by me, after I found out that the little bastard was lying about being crippled just so he could get free money out of me! That little son of a bitch! Anyway, my son is fine now…asleep in his grave. Well, this took a dark turn. I made that all up, by the way…I think I did. Okay. I have to get back to being in prison for murder. Excuse me… Jack-Knife: Hey muthafugga! Y’all gettin’ ovah heeyah so we can shiv this white boy?...

“Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer” begins with workers marking off patches of green grass with orange paint. The beeps of a bulldozer sounded as excavation at the Oaklawn cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma, got underway last summer. Forensic anthropologist had turned up data that suggested there might be a mass grave at the site. Director Dawn Porter’s insightful, chilling, often elegant documentary about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 and the other virulent outbursts of anti-Black violence that preceded it — making 1919 one of the deadliest for Black Americans at the hands of white mobs — premieres June 18 on National Geographic and Hulu.
“Rise Again” is a hard but welcome addition to a growing collection of movies and television series — fiction and nonfiction — that insists viewers reckon with the nation’s violent, anti-Black past, a past that has carried over into our present. That it begins streaming on Juneteenth — a complicated,...

Photo: ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’/Netflix Another Bo Burnham comedy special is just what the doctor ordered. Once he dropped the plan to release his one-man at-home show, comedy fans everywhere saw an extra sprinkle of sunlight in the air. Even though we knew nothing about the contents of the show until it arrived, you could expect there to be equal parts jokes, satire, criticism of sociological and cultural agendas, and of course, his patented existentialism. ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’ became available for streaming on Netflix on May 30th, 2021, and it is named incredibly appropriately: both for the setting of the show and its theme. Made over the course of the year-long lockdown and quarantine that was 2020 and early 2021, Bo wrote, directed, edited, and starred in the entire show, by himself, in his home. No audience, no camera crew, no editing house; there was nothing except for Bo and his genius mind.

Photo: 'Dallas Buyers Club'/Focus Features "It's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates.” These are the words of Mathew McConaughey during his Oscar acceptance speech in 2014 for his performance as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. How fitting for him to focus on the nature of gratitude in his speech when the Jean-Marc Vallée directed film he stars in champions themes such as generosity and integrity in the face of adversity. With Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner playing supporting roles, the film illustrates the gripping realities of the AIDS epidemic and the damning effect that a corrupt, money-hungry government can leave on entire communities. Taking home two Academy Awards, the film is a gritty dissection based on a true story of Texan pride that’s been riddled and bruised with stinging visceral pains. NBCUniversal parent Comcast Tuesday went live with Comcast Rise, a program to help minority-owned small businesses hit by Covid-19 that offers grants, equipment, internet access, commercial production, free ads and marketing advice. It’s part of a broader $100 million initiative the conglom announced in June.
Comcast began testing the ‘Comcastrise.com’ portal last week and will start publicizing it today, asking for businesses to apply for help in four areas: marketing consulting, access to television inventory, creative production and technology upgrades. It will announce a group of winners each quarter. Businesses not chosen can re-apply. Winners of the first round will be announced Nov 28, Maria Weaver, CMO of Comcast Advertising, told Deadline. The goal is to touch “thousands of businesses,” she said.

It’s official! Disney has bought Fox, meaning that the X-Men and Fantastic Four will likely be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before long. While some fans are worried about what might happen with the current X-Universe, as it’s being called, it’s fair to say that just about everyone is pleased that Marvel’s First Family are returning home.
Fox has had three attempts in the past to nail a Fantastic Four movie, but have fluffed it every time. While there’s not much to defend in 2015’s effort, 2005’s outing and 2007’s Rise of the Silver Surfer did have some redeeming qualities. Sure, they were dumb and corny, but they did introduce Marvel fans to Chris Evans, who later swapped Human Torch for Captain America.
But could the McU pair Evans up with one of his old Ff cast members? That’s what Michael Chiklis is hoping for.

But could the McU pair Evans up with one of his old Ff cast members? That’s what Michael Chiklis is hoping for.

Get ready for a new show to sing along to! NBC released the first trailer for its upcoming musical drama, Rise.
The new show, which premieres in March, comes from the producer of Broadway’s hit Hamilton as well as the producer of standout NBC dramas Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.
And though it will likely spark Glee comparisons as it follows a dedicated teacher (How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor) taking over the school’s theater department, the trailer definitely has the darker real-life elements of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.
The show also stars Rosie Perez and Moana newcomer Auli’I Cravalho, 17, as it follows teens dealing with the pressures of school, their extracurriculars, underage drinking, and caring for sick parents.
Rise premieres on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 p.m. Et on NBC.

After being temporarily suspended from Twitter, Rose McGowan called on supporters to boycott the social-media site — and several people answered. The actress accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her 20 years ago, and her ban was apparently the result of tweeting a private phone number. Before going radio silent, a number of others announced their intentions.

Despite their wealth and social status. Thomas and Martha Wayne were victims of random violence in a city filled with such acts on an hourly basis. The robbery and dual murders could have happened to anyone which makes Bruce Wayne a sympathetic character – he could be us. His training to become Batman resonates because any of us could dedicate ourselves both mentally and physical to perfection in order to prevent others from becoming victims.

Deadpool's opening weekend proves that people will turn out R-rated comic book movies. But they have been doing since the 1970s...
Deadpool – an X-Men spin-off for Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Merc With The Mouth’ - is in cinemas now, and in spite of its R-rated tag, it's shattered the box office ceiling for February releases with a stunning $260m global opening weekend. Maybe this is the point where Hollywood realises that if it makes the right R-rated movie - Deadpool, rather than Jonah Hex - people will turn up.
That R stands for Restricted, meaning that under-17s in America will havehad to be accompanied by an adult if they wanted to see Deadpool in cinemas this weekend. It’s a 15-certificate film to me and other denizens of the British Isles, meaning that no under-15s this side of the pond will be permitted to see it in cinemas.

Gotham, Season 2, Episode 4, “Strike Force”
Written by Danny Cannon
Directed by Tj Scott
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
Gotham enters a new arc as Theo Galavan begins to implement phase two of his plan to seize control of the City. The first part of his plan was to bestow chaos by unleashing the Maniax and his next move involves making himself appear as a hero to win the hearts and minds of the citizens. The extent of this plan was accomplished with the surprising twist in last week’s “The Last Laugh”, which also disposed of one of the show’s most interesting villains. This turn has reaped rewards for Galavan, as well as created a new shift in the direction of the season.
Galavan’s staged heroism has won him a candidacy for the Mayor’s office which will give passage for the next phase of his evil plan.

Josh Trank's reboot of the Fantastic Four takes a few gambles, but not all of them pay off...
There's a long-standing snarky line amongst comic book movie fans that Pixar's The Incredibles is the honorary best screen adaptation of the Fantastic Four. Writer-director Brad Bird may have invented his Parrs from a radicalised version of Marvel Comics' beloved First Family, but the gag is that they've been in three real movies of their own, none of which are seen to have got the characters quite right.
The first, 1994's The Fantastic Four, was an unreleased Roger Corman production that was famously churned out on a low budget in order to meet a contractual deadline on their option for the property. The second and third, starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis, were produced by 20th Century Fox a decade ago and made over $600m between them.

Jurassic World is fine. Massive blockbuster earnings aside, it’s neither contrived enough to feel like another lesser sequel nor original enough to stray too far from Spielberg’s 1993 original. That uneasy cradle — between ingenuity and brand loyalty — is where tentpole franchises and their music have come to rest. With Furious 7, Atlantic Records threw dub step and electro-house music onto another collection of so-so promotional hip-hop. Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson only squeak out brief homages to John Barry rather than admit how indebted to Roger Moore Bond Kingsman: The Secret Service really is. Even Danny Elfman and Brian Tyler never stray far from Alan Silvestri’s original “Transformers meets Mission Impossible” theme in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Blockbuster movie composition is, like the studio system in 2015, sturdy, safe and kinda boring. Michael Giacchino’s score for Jurassic World is the latest to fit the mold. Like the movie itself,...

It's offical. The Thing got an upgrade for the reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise, and he’s (thankfully) a lot less orange this time around.
Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, The Adventures of Tintin) takes over the role of Ben Grimm – a.k.a. The Thing – from “The Shield”’s Michael Chiklis for August’s larger-than-life, universe-jumping retelling of the Fantastic Four. Joining Bell are Whiplash’s Miles Teller as Mister Fantastic, Kate Mara ("House of Cards") as Invisible Woman, and Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as the Human Torch.
After the 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Rise of the Silver Surfer failed to win over its core audience, fans were skeptical of another big screen adaptation of their beloved Stan Lee-penned comic book.
However, with Chronicle’s upstart young director Josh Trank and its stacked cast, this summer’s Fantastic Fourcontinues to prove the naysayers wrong. After its...

Ever think that Taylor Swift looks at Nashville‘s Maddie Conrad and thinks, “You lucky twerp?”
After all, while a pre-teen Tay-Tay had to hoof it all over Music City, begging label execs to listen to her demo, Rayna’s older daughter spends most of this week’s episode being pursued by an aggressive studio head with a penchant for expensive welcome gifts.
Don’t worry, Taylor: By the end of the episode, Rayna puts the kibosh on her kid’s career (for now) and inadvertently brings about the downfall of her biggest enemy — and, might I add, she does...

Hurricane Beverly blows into Nashville this week, and the damage she leaves in her wake is considerable, irrevocable and really, really annoying.
Even Gunnar at his Season 1-iest could not evoke as much of my ire as Scarlett’s mom does when she shows up and acts exactly as you’d expect of someone who once literally drove her daughter mad.
On the plus side, even Deacon’s irritating sister — and the setback in his illness in which she becomes involved — can’t push him into the pit of despair I feared he’d call home once his diagnosis set in.
