Los Angeles-born filmmaker of Hungarian ancestry Nimród Antal made a name for himself on the international circuit with a debut that turned into a minor cult film, Kontroll. He then returned back over the pond to work on horror Vacancy, sci-fi thriller Predators, music movie Metallica Through the Never and managed to direct an episode of M. Night Shyamalan´s TV adaptation of the mystery trilogy Wayward Pines. On his recent visit to Hungary, he finished his latest feature, The Whiskey Bandit, combining the allure of Eastern European social drama with high-paced Hollywoodsy action and gloss. It's based on the real events and personality of Attila Ambrus, born in Transylvania. In the 90s, Ambrus worked as a professional goaltender (and the team´s janitor) while moonlighting as...

"Viszkis was one of the most famous bank robbers in Hungary. He drank whiskey before every robbing. This is his story." An official trailer has debuted for a film titled The Whiskey Robber, also known as The Whiskey Bandit or A Viszkis in Hungarian. This is the latest feature film from Hungarian-American filmmaker Nimród Antal, of Kontroll, Vacancy, Armored, and Predators in the past. The Whiskey Robber tells the true story of a Hungarian man named Attila Ambrus, also known as "Viszkis", who robbed 29 financial institutions in Budapest between 1993 and 1999. The only clue left behind at the crime scenes was the distinct aroma of whiskey. This looks like a fascinating, thrilling story of a man who just wanted to be happy and realized the only way to feel that was to collect money - mainly by robbing banks. Check this out. Here's an international trailer for Nimród Antal's The Whiskey Robber,...

It was back in 2003 that Hungarian director Nimrod Antal burst on to the international scene with his debut feature, Kontroll. A smart, slick title that was not at all what we'd been taught to expect from Eastern European cinema, Kontroll triggered a bit of a frenzy around Antal and Hollywood came calling. But while he tended to over deliver in the small to mid budget projects he was handed - Vacancy, Armored, Predators, Metallica Through The Never - the personality that caught so much attention in Antal's debut never quite came through in his Us efforts. Which means there is a certain amount of anticipation to see what Antal can do back in his native Hungary now that he has returned there for a...

It was all the way back in 2003 that young Hungarian director Nimrod Antal burst on to the scene with Kontroll, a super stylish action-comedy-thriller hybrid revolving around subway workers in Budapest. The film marked Antal as a director to watch and, sure enough, Hollywood was watching and he's been working in English on this side of the ocean ever since with his Us career hitting its peak with the one two punch of the Robert Rodriguez produced Predators and 3D concert film Metallica Through The Never. But now he's headed home. Antal's next film will be his first Hungarian effort since Kontroll, a large scaled biopic of Attila Ambrus - a Hungarian born in Romania who requested asylum in Hungary in 1988 and launched...

It wasn't so long ago that Hungary felt as though it was a nation about to explode on the international film scene with directors such as Gyorgy Palfi (Taxidermia), Nimrod Antal (Kontroll) and Aron Gauder (The District) all appearing on the scene within a few years of one another and wowing on both the cult and arthouse festival circuits. What could go wrong? Well, the economy, for one thing with Hungary hit so hard by the global economic crisis that their national film fund - the principal financier on all Hungarian films - completely shut down for several years with the entire national industry essentially put on hold for the duration. But Hungary's back now and, oh yes, still finding the balance between art, genre...

Since they originally formed back in 1981, Metallica has gone from being an underground heavy metal band to one of the most successful musical acts in the world. The group’s nine studio albums have sold over one-hundred million copies worldwide, they have been nominated for and won dozens of awards, and their songs get more playtime on rock radio than any other band. While the band has already graced the silver screen in the documentary Some Kind of Monster (2004), they’ve returned now with Metallica: Through the Never, a unique hybrid film that blends a fictional narrative with real footage from a set of concerts the band held in summer 2012. Metallica: Through the Never is a solid film, albeit with some notable flaws, but it is definitely worth checking out for fans of Metallica or heavy metal music in general.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Metallica have unveiled two behind-the-scenes clips from their upcoming film Through the Never.
The mini-documentaries were filmed back in 2010 for the project, which is said to have been financed by the band themselves at around $20 million.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, before a release in IMAX 3D on September 27 in the Us, and arriving in regular cinemas on October 4. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
The Nimród Antal (Predators, Kontroll) written and directed film combines documentary footage of the band's concerts with a fictional narrative.
Dane DeHaan stars as a roadie who is sent out on an errand for the band, leading to far more than he bargained for.
The actor is best known for his starring role in Chronicle. He will next be seen in Kill Your Darlings and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

On March 1st 1989 Metallica played at the Brendan Byrne Arena In New Jersey for their Damaged Justice tour. I was 16 years old and it happened to be my first concert of any kind. It was a lasting impression and one I looked back on fondly as Metallica presented their upcoming 3D IMAX concert/movie, Through The Never, in Hall H. The panel consisted of director Nimrod Antal (Predators) and star Dane Dehann (Chronicle) as well as all 4 members of the band. James Hetfield , Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo took the stage to a raucous ovation, one worthy of the greatest metal band in history.
I have sat through many panels over the years but this was by far the loudest. They jumped right into things by debuting the poster and the violent post apocalyptic trailer that shook the walls of Hall H. The footage showed Dehaan stuck in...

Yahoo! Movies has launched a trailer for the upcoming feature Metallica: Through the Never, featuring a filmed performance by the metal legends... but make no mistake, this isn't your usual concert documentary; instead, Metallica's music accompanies a sweeping apocalyptic fantasy adventure focusing on the wild escapades of a young roadie named Trip (Dane DeHaan of The Place Beyond the Pines, Kill Your Darlings and Amazing Spider-Man 2) on an urgent mission for the band during a sold-out concert. Written and directed by Nimród Antal (Predators, Kontroll), produced by Charlotte Huggins (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and shot in 3D with some scenes employing up to 24 cameras at once, Through the Never follows Trip as he tries to recover a mysterious item needed for the show; along the way, he gets into a car crash, finds himself in the midst of a clash between protesters and riot police, and...

I'm not sure what's going on in this image, but it's our first look at Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) in the new film Metallica: Through the Never. The movie was directed by Nimrod Antal, and in it DeHaan plays a road crew member of the band who is sent out on a mission that turns his life upside down. It looks like things get insanely out of hand. This image has a post-apocalyptic feel to it.

Towards the beginning of the year, we learned that specialty film distributor Picturehouse was making a comeback with Metallica Through the Never, a new feature film getting an IMAX release. Now we have a first look at the hybrid concert film and narrative which features Chronicle star Dane DeHaan (who will also be seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), and it looks interesting to say the lest. The film is said to follow DeHaan as one of Metallica's crew members sent out on sort of mission during one of Metallica's sold out shows. And the story is supposed to take off from there and get crazy as only Metallica fans would expect. Here's a first look at Nimrod Antal's Metallica Through the Never sent to us from Picturehouse: Starring Metallica, a cast of thousands of their fans and breakout star Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2...

Metallica's 3D film will not only be a documentary, but part-drama as well. Dane DeHaan ("Lawless," "Chronicle") will be co-starring beside the metal band in "Metallica Through the Never," due August 9, as "a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down." As previously reported, Nimród Antal ("Kontroll") is at the helm of the film, which is named for one of the legendary crew's songs (below). The concert footage was shot in August...

Continuing their downward trajectory from badass metal gods, to aging hard rock clowns, Metallica are now doing something that puts them in the same category as Justin Bieber and Katy Perry: they're making a 3D movie. The project was first announced last fall before their dreadful Lulu album with Lou Reed dropped. But it seems there is no bad idea that can keep these guys down, and now their project has a director.
"Predators" helmer Nimrod Antal is now on board to shoot the movie, which will blend the traditional concert stuff with a narrative of some kind. Considering the band already chronicled their internal strife with "Some Kind Of Monster," who knows what they'll cover here. Or maybe they'll do some kind of fictional story tied into their own music. Guess we'll have to wait and see, but not for long as this one is gearing up. A...

"I've been a fan of Nimróds since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away. I've watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years." Who knew Lars Ulrich was a cinephile? Certainly his statement above, especially the first sentence echoes my own reaction to Kontroll playing the Midnight Madness sidebar at Tiff. Many of us knew right away that not only was Kontroll the most interesting bit of filmmaking of the 10 Mm entries in that quite strong year (including GitS: Innocence, Calvaire, The Machinist, Zebraman, Saw) but it was also Hungarian director Nimród Antal's splashy calling card energetically lobbed toward Hollywood. After a solid and idiosyncratic Studio debut with the thriller Vacancy, Antal has sort of become...

Metal juggernauts Metallica have been quietly planning a mysterious 3D feature film project and now the group has found the director for the task: Hungarian filmmaker Nimród Antal.
Described as a “marriage of narrative and concert,” the film will include all five Metallica band members with Antal aiming for a summer 2013 release. The group has been hush of any more details, but considering their ’04 documentary “Some Kind of Monster,” which showcased the members in group therapy – it’s bound to be interesting.
Antal, while born in Los Angeles, headed back to his heritage in Hungary in 1991 – attending film school there and completing his award-winning debut film “Kontroll” in 1997. In 2005, Antal moved back to California and has been working in Hollywood ever since. His directing credits include ‘07’s “Vacancy” with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale. His most recent effort, “Predators,” was a (financially successful) reboot of the Schwarzenegger classic that starred Adrian Brody.

I can’t say that a 3D movie created by Metallica is something I expect to be “good,” but I won’t let that discount some legitimate curiosity on my own part. First announced in October, the only solid news has been the band’s desire to create a “Metallica-style feature,” one which could only be made by a filmmaker “with the stones” for such a project.
Nimród Antal is the man with those stones. Collider has provided the big update on this film, which, according to Antal, will “harness the powerful and almighty energy of Metallica’s live shows, [and] inject a narrative into it.”
Here’s what the band’s drummer, Lars Ulrich, had to say:
“I’ve been a fan of Nimród‘s since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away. I’ve watched with excitement his career in Hollywood...

Of all the films making their way to theaters by way of the ’80s, Predators is perhaps the most confusing. A pseudo-sequel to the 1987 schlock nonsense Predator, the films are only loosely related, and unnecessarily so. Moreover, the movie has no plot by design, and its curious delusions of grandeur render it impotent in all areas that might be put forward as the excuses for its existence.
A random assortment of killers wake in freefall, and find themselves armed, but unsure where they might be. After first getting past the initial mistrust of each other, they reluctantly band together, and soon learn that they are being hunted. Apparently abducted and thrown into the jungle in order to serve as worthy prey, the group must find a way to stay alive long enough to elude the aliens who have the upper hand in just about every conceivable way.

Nimród Antal and Robert Rodriguez have resurrected a dying bread. For almost 23 years now the Predators have slowly been fading away from an onslaught of mediocrity to down right awfulness– yes, I’m looking at you AvP’s. A once great monster got turned into a goofy one. Now it’s back and in full swing.
Predators may not be as wonderful as the original testosterone-filled spectacle, but it’s not too far behind in terms of delivering on the B-movie goods. It’s extremely self-aware and does nearly everything you’d expect and want from a picture like this: well done action, a compelling ensemble, and plenty of standout cheesy (in a good way) one-liners.
In the promising opening we’re immediately brought to Royce (Adrien Brody) who’s in a free fall and has no clue why or where he is. The same goes for the others that...

Robert Rodriguez and Nimród Antal's remake of the 1987 Arnie-starring gorefest has had hype and glowing reviews, but can it match the original's trashy cool?
The basics
On an unknown, heavily forested planet surrounded by oodles of what look like giant moons (suggesting that someone has been watching a little too much Avatar), a body drops from the sky, complete with parachute and assorted weaponry. It belongs to an extremely buff Adrien Brody, who's playing a special ops guy who apparently has no idea where he is or why he has just been booted out of a spaceship on to an alien planet. Swiftly afterwards, various other highly dangerous soldiers, criminals and assorted weirdos begin falling from the clouds. Turns out that they have all been transported there to act as "game" for the Predators of the much-loved 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Chaos inevitably ensues.
The stakes

Director: Nimród Antal Writers: Michael Finch, Alex Litvak, Jim Thomas (characters), John Thomas (characters) Starring: Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Louis Ozawa Changchien In 1987, Predator introduced an invisibility-cloaked extra-terrestrial warrior who wreaked havoc in a Central American jungle. Looking to reboot the Predator franchise in 1994, Twentieth Century Fox enlisted Robert Rodriguez (fresh off his directorial debut El Mariachi) to pen a new Predator script. Fifteen years later, Rodriguez received a phone call from Fox saying they just found his script and wanted to make his movie. Predators is that movie (though with a revised script and Rodriguez deferred the directing duties to Nimród Antal). In the jarring and disorienting opening, we are dropped – quite literally – into the jungle alongside Royce (Adrien Brody), a heavily-armed lone soldier sporting a very large gun. Royce promptly gathers a merry albeit untrustworthy band of outsiders (which,...

“I woke up in freefall,” Adrien Brody gripes as Predators opens. He’s not lying: Our introduction to this world comes as his does, when he opens his eyes to find himself plummeting from space toward the surface of an alien planet, the parachute on his back not yet open, with no certain indication that it will open. (It does, of course, or else he wouldn’t be around to complain later about this appalling treatment.) It’s sort of an astonishing moment, not quite like anything we’ve seen before onscreen, and for just that moment, I had hope: Was, perhaps, Hungarian-American filmmaker Nimród Antal about to give us a film to match the verve and audacity of his 2003 debut, Kontroll, which is -- no kidding -- an action movie about gangs of ticket takers on the Budapest subway? Alas, it was not to be: Almost immediately after Brody’s landing planetside,...
