Not up the standards of the director, Aunque Estes Lejos is a passable divertiment, that wants to criticize stereotypes in Cuban films but ends up falling into their trap. The ending feels contrived as if they were striving to be clever or original, being neither.
Juan Carlos Tabio's best solo efforts are still "Se Permuta" and "Plaff". In this film as with many Cuban film, it is obvious the presence of Spanish investors, who always want co- productions that show the "local flavor" of Cuba: Ex: The dancing mulatas, music, heat, etc. This is a film about film-making that tries to criticize that problem, but ends up being superficial, if still mildly enjoyable.
Still it is far better that most of the usual Cuban-Spanish co-productions.
