Spike TV (now Paramount Network) planned a second season in August 2004, but production stopped due to Krucfalusi's continued inability to meet his deadlines.
Billy West declined to reprise his role as Stimpy or provide any voice work for this series. West alleged that the portrayal of Ren and Stimpy as homosexuals in "Onward and Upward" served as, in West's phrasing, 'an advertisement for NAMBLA.'
Billy West said in an interview that he did not wish to voice Stimpy in the Adult Party Cartoon because he believed that the series was not funny and that voicing Stimpy in it would damage his career.
Due to the bad ratings and poor reception for fans and critics alike, the series was cancelled after 3 episodes aired. Spike TV pulled eight additional episodes, including reruns of the original Nickelodeon episodes, the unaired episode Man's Best Friend, and the unaired pilot Big House Blues, due to John K.'s departure from Spumco in 2005 before a lawsuit by Carbunkle animator Bob Jaques in 2008. Former Spumco animators Vincent Waller and Richard Pursel moved to Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants (1999) with Paul Tibbitt, Zeus Cervas and Casey Alexander. Series creators Stephen Hillenburg and Derek Drymon left after The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) before moving on other shows for Cartoon Network, including Camp Lazlo (2005) and Adventure Time (2010).
An episode titled "Mans best Friend" was originally set to air during the second season of the original Ren and Stimpy cartoon. However, it was considered too disturbing for Nickelodeon or MTV to air and was the ultimate reason John K was fired from the show. It remained unaired for a long time until 2003 when it aired on Spike TV as the unofficial pilot for this series, the episode even earned a TV-MA rating.
