"Soulless Pain". "So Plain". "Slow Pang". "So Racist".
The words described above cannot even give the description of what I called so far the most ignorant film out there and to me this was one of the WORST films of 2004. In other words, the WORST film of all time. The film is called "Soul Plane". But the comedy is so drab and so tedious, and utterly disturbingly insensitive,it may give the option to invent a more fitting title besides to main title that is being issued.
"Soul Plane",which never quite takes off and is in content to taxi circles for 86 minutes, continues a horrendous year for comedies featuring predominantly African-American casts. Combine this dud with a string of failed hits which includes "My Baby's Daddy","Barbershop 2","You Got Served","Love Don't Cost A Thing","Breakin All The Rules", "Johnson Family Vacation",which gives the audience a grand total of some unfunny minutes and two of those minutes come from "Soul Plane" Let's face it,and some may agree with me on this...When will we see a decent black movie with a decent script and a star that doesn't make an total ass of himself during the first 15 minutes of the picture, not to mention a decent storyline where something is being positive here giving blacks a positive message when they leave the theatre? When will we see this? The last decent black movie that I liked was years ago....
Has African-American movies made a declined where the majority of the film has to be ghettoized all the time? "Soul Plane" is one of them and this is why movies nowadays have been going downhill since mainly the comedies that featured African-American actors making idiots of themselves. "Soul Plane" is sort of like the black version of the "Airport" and "Airplane" movies, but there is not a single funny moment in this neither. I was so p***ed that I almost had to cough up extra for the relatives that I brought along to see this piece of racist garbage at the nearby theatre, and to me it was stupid as hell and ridicious. I'll never stoop that low for a sorry movie ever again.
As for some of the scenes in this, well a ribald scene making fun of airport security, featuring Mo'Nique(from the TV-series The Parkers)as a smack-trash talking security guard, who uses her metal detector for other things, doesn't bring the laughs, and neither does the rest of the cast which includes Kevin Hart,Brian Hooks,John Witherspoon,Method Man,Missy Pyle,Tom Arnold, comedian D.L. Hughley, and not to mention half, that's right, half of the comedians from the BET-TV series "Comicview" which includes former guest host of Comicview,Sammora.
The story centers on Nashawn(Kevin Hart),who gets stuck in an airplane bathroom, successfully sues the airline for $100 million, and uses the dough to start his own airline---a black owned airline to give blacks a more comfortable travel choice, but as the movie insists needs airplanes with dance clubs with all the trimmings including R&B singers,extra-wide toilet seats and chrome rims on the landing gear. Let's face it,what it would be like if there was a black owned airline? If may not be like this, but totally different without being so damn ghetto all the time. As for the movie,it may just be a politically correct,as Mel Brooks once said and proved time and time again, that is if the material is funny enough.....well,it wasn't funny for me.
Caricatures of stereotyping of minorities aren't funny in and of themselves, but can be twisted and riffed into guiltily funny gags, that aren't hilarious, but also extremely racist. And without the inventive spin,we all get tons of things which includes a pot-smoking ex-con pilot played by the ghetto of the ghettoest:Snoop Dogg. There are other examples of stereotyping as well, including one scene where the Latino character, who is female, has her legs up in the cockpit of the plane in a sexual position and speaks broken English throughout the rest of the picture. And this is one example of the coalition of ignorance throughout and it is just as prudish and stupidical as it gets. The other character is where the overweight black male character is being tauted as gay and everyone on the plane gives him a hard time. This movie contains a lot of base minority stereotyping and to me is was just that disgusting. I basically walked out of the theatre during the last 15 minutes. I can't believe this was that awful!
Please, don't spend your money at the theatre to see this piece of racist garbage, and when it comes out on video, don't rent it neither. The worst picture of 2004.
