Dharmatma was the first Indian film shot in Afghanistan.

Feroz Khan always had liked poetry. Once before Dharmatma, Indivar had recite a poetry to Feroz Khan, which started as tere chehra mein woh jadoo hai....Feroz Khan thought this poetry can be developed into an beautiful song so they worked on it and got the song. That is how the song was created. Later it was used for Dharmatma. .

Raj Kapoor had recorded the song "Main Shayar To Nahin" at a studio in Lower Parel, right after which he threw a party to celebrate the start of his new movie. Among the invitees were Shammi Kapoor and Feroz Khan, who had just returned from shooting International Crook in Canada. Shammi Kapoor had put on allot of weight and grew his trademark beard. Feroz Khan was about to start filming Dharmatma. Feroz Khan bluntly told Shammi Kapoor that he looked like he could play his father in Dharmatma. The remark led to a heated exchange of abuses followed by full blown fisticuffs. Soon enough, Randhir was pulling Shammi Kapoor away while Sanjay Khan was doing the same to Feroz. It took a while to separate them. They were put in their respective cars. However , it turned out they both drove to Haji Ali where they proceeded to drink more and cry on each others shoulders.

Danny Denzongpa was offered the role of Gabbar Singh in 1974. Due his dates being blocked for the Dharmatma schedule in Afghanistan, he had to pass on the offer.

Feroz Khan first wanted Zeenat Aman for Rekha's role. When he approached her she declined saying she did not want any supporting roles . This angered Feroz. One night when Feroz was high on drinks, he phoned Zeenat and gave her a verbal thrashing A few years later when he wanted her for Qurbani, he had to get a mutual friend to speak to her and convince her to do the film .
