Although Dave's wife is Asian (Filipina specifically), none of the various Asian actresses that have appeared in sketches are his wife.
No. Dave's son is played by child actor Amir Ali Said. According to Neal Brennan on the DVD commentary, he was cast because they liked the way he said "He's hi-LAR-ious".
Yes. Dave's grandfather was born blind. He was born in 1911 in a white hospital to a white woman. His birth father is unknown. According to Dave on the DVD commentary, "My grandfather looked like a white person. He probably was a white person...His dad was either black or white. Nobody knows. He could be white." He was adopted by a black family and he could not see himself so according to Dave "as far as he knows he's a black dude that grew up in the streets of D.C." On the day of the assassination of Martin Luther King, some black people started riots. According to Dave, on that day his grandfather is on a bus and hears a group of black youths threatening a white man. His grandfather thought how silly the white man was to be in a black neighborhood while blacks were rioting. He did not realize that the white man was him. As his grandfather explained to the youths that he was black, one can imagine the confused looks on their faces.
Neal Brennan was the co-creator, co-writer and co-producer of the show with Dave. He can sometimes been seen in sketches. For example, he is the man whose head explodes in the Clayton Bigsby sketch. Dave and Neal had been long-time friends and writing partners. But Dave's sudden departure during the third season has put an end to their partnership. In an interview with Maxim, when asked if he would work with Dave again, Neal said "Theres no chance."
"Rooster" from the album Speakerboxxx.
A rearranged version of "Simon Says" by Pharoah Monch. "Simon Says" features a sample of the score from "Godzilla". This sample was not cleared and as a result the album is no longer available. The notes were rearranged by the show to avoid the same clearance problem.
"Hip Hop" by Dead Prez from their album "Let's Get Free". The group perform the song in "Dave Chappelle's Block Party".
"Sadeness (Part I)" by Enigma. It was a huge worldwide hit in 1990.
"Music Jump-Off" was a special episode that aired during the second season. Dave speaks to students at his old high school, Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Past musical guest performances and sketches featuring musicians were shown. Many of them were deleted scenes that had never aired before. It was not included on the DVD due to music clearance issues but it can be seen in reruns.
Charlie Murphy confirmed that both stories he told about Rick James and Prince are true stories. As seen in the sketch, Rick James confirmed most of the basic details of the incidents in the sketch about him. Prince has also said in an interview that the story about beating Eddie Murphy's entourage in basketball is true.
