Emmanuelle Devos initially turned down the role of Nora due to the passing of her sister Valentine in 1995, leading writer/director Arnaud Desplechin to consider Valeria Bruni Tedeschi for the part (and not Juliette Binoche as was erroneously reported in the French press at the time). In the end, he called Devos again two weeks before filming and she agreed to take the role.
