GLOBAL EFFECT is a terrorist thriller in which a jumble of assorted figures must join forces to do battle against a ruthless gang of terrorist murderers who plan to unleash a horrific virus on Africa. It's credited as a US film but was obviously shot in South Africa with African surroundings and a South African supporting cast.
It's also a cheesy, dumb film with a silly storyline and performances and characters that are difficult to take seriously. Director Terry Cunningham throws in a number of violent scenes in a bid to make this edgy, adult entertainment, but they just feel ridiculous and his slow motion moments of filming are truly rubbish. I notice that he never improved as director, instead going on to make that awful JACK HUNTER trilogy of TV films which were of the same calibre as this.
The film's lead is Madchen Amick, formerly of TWIN PEAKS, appearing in her 'lost in the wilderness' period before she found a new resurgence in American TV. Beefy Daniel Bernhardt (JOHN WICK) is the chief villain, and there's a surprisingly non-villainous performance from the always-enjoyable Arnold Vosloo too. Watch out for a minor turn from Hakeem Kae-Kazim, these days starring in BLACK SAILS.
