Daniel Stern, who played Marv in the first two films, was approached to reprise his role in this one. Stern quickly declined, calling it "an insult, total garbage." On the other hand, Joe Pesci wasn't offered to reprise his role as Harry. Instead, Harry's name was only mentioned.
Although this movie takes place in Chicago, Illinois, it was actually filmed in Capetown, South Africa.
Macaulay Culkin, the original Kevin, was less than impressed by this film. He reviewed it on RedLetterMedia's YouTube show Plinketto #7 (2018). It was not the Best of the Worst as it lost to Quigley (2003).
The producers had hoped that this movie would lead to a Home Alone television series, and several of the main cast members had clauses in their contracts that would have brought them back for such a series. However, this movie failed to perform up to expectations in the ratings, premiering to only 12.6 million viewers, in addition to receiving negative reviews from fans and critics, and the series never went ahead.
This movie is widely considered by many Home Alone fans to be the worst film in the franchise.
