There’s a frustrating character type that pops up on TV from time to time: bad friends. While friendships filled with strife and conflict certainly exist, some writers rely on “good” friends betraying each other’s trust to create drama, leaving both an icky feeling in viewers’ minds and a lack of resonance between the characters and their audience. Of late, “Friends From College,” “Flaked,” and “I’m Dying Up Here” have all offered up toxic friendships meant to be seen as traditional, and now, despite the best efforts of a game cast, “Ill Behaviour” has joined the club.
Written by “Peep Show” co-creator Sam Bain, “Ill Behaviour” was originally released in the U.K. as three episodes, an hour each, but Showtime has divvied them up into six half-hour entries to better fit both the minimum episode count and genre/length associations in America. The edits don’t seem to disrupt the flow,...

Keira Knightley and a number of famous faces were out on Monday to trade in support of Bgc Charity Day. Bgc set up its charity day to commemorate the 658 colleagues and 61 Eurobroker employees who were tragically killed on September 11 by distributing 100 percent of their global revenues to Relief Fund and other charities around the world. Keira attended the event on behalf of the Sma Trust, a charity dedicated to finding a cure and treatments for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Past Bgc Charity Days have seen the likes of Prince Harry and Prince William, Margot Robbie, and Jake Gyllenhaal reach for the phone to show their support. Full Lineup Announcements
– “3-D Auteurs,” a 19-day, 34-film festival spotlighting stereoscopic movies by some of history’s most distinguished directors, will run at Film Forum November 11 – 29. The festival spans 3-D’s earliest days (including some turn-of-the-century films by pioneer Georges Méliès) to the present, and represents virtually every genre, including Westerns, Film Noir, and Science Fiction. Hollywood’s first big 3-D craze (sometimes called 3-D’s “golden era”), intended to offset the threat of television, came in the early 1950s, with such movies as Hitchcock’s “Dial M For Murder,” André De Toth’s “House of Wax” and Jack Arnold’s “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (all included in the series).
Hollywood produced roughly 50 movies in the process from 1952 to 1954, before fizzling out and being overtaken by...

Need to catch up? Check out last week’s Outlander recap here.
Even before the Starz adaptation’s first “och” was uttered, readers of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels knew that Jamie’s rape at the end of Season 1 would be a hard to witness, highly upsetting and barely survivable event for them — let alone Mr. and Mrs. Fraser. In a similar vein, ardent fans have been aware for some time now that a painful swath of Book 2 was barreling its way down the cobblestone path.

It’d be simplistic though not inaccurate to say that whereas TV’s DC Comics-based series are very much about heroes doing super things, Netflix’s ever-unspooling slate of Marvel dramas — including Jessica Jones, which releases its 13-episode Season 1 on Friday — tend to focus on what these extraordinary individuals are up to between the saving of lives and fighting of crime.

Tired of having too much TV to choose between? Dizzy from the metric tons of content Netflix constantly drops onto your screen? Too bad! “Jessica Jones,” the newest addition to both the Netflix oeuvre and the Marvel Universe canon, will kick down your door tomorrow, Nov. 20. Created by screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and based on the notorious Marvel Comics character of the same name, the series stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica, disgraced superhero and current alcoholic-detective. As fans of “Breaking Bad,” “Veronica Mars,” and especially “Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23” know, Ritter’s singular gifts are perfectly suited for a sassy superhero drama that—if rumors are to be believed—marks Netflix’s darkest original series to date. Don’t miss Ritter, Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, and David Tennant as the show’s big bad. It’s sure to be a kickass weekend. Inspired by this post?...

Superhero stories began as adolescent male power fantasies, where the meekest among us were revealed to have hidden strength that they could use to solve any problem they wanted. Over time, the genre has layered complications on top of that — the angst of Spider-Man, the oppressed minority metaphors of the X-Men — but more often than not, these stories present superherodom as the best possible life. Not "Jessica Jones," though. Her story isn't a power fantasy, but a nightmare. It's a superhero saga as rape survivor tale, where it doesn't matter how strong you are — or even that you can fly like Superman himself — because there will always be someone who can find a way to hurt you and make you feel like less than nothing. The series, which debuts Friday on Netflix (I've seen the first seven episodes), is based on "Alias," a 2001 comic(*) by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos,...

Marvel’s foray into television is set to continue. With Agents of Shield returning for its third season earlier this year, and Agent Carter renewed for a second season, the comics conglomerate saw heir deal with Netflix begin to bear fruit earlier this year with the release of Daredevil. The company is not sitting back, however, as both series will have a companion in November in the form of Jessica Jones.

With not long to go until its release on Friday the 20th of November, here's the first full trailer for Marvel's Jessica Jones...
After a stream of intriguing and well-put-together teaser clips, Marvel Studios and Netflix have finally let us have a proper full-length trailer for Jessica Jones, their latest collaboration.
Set in the same corner of New York's Hell's Kitchen as Daredevil (quite possibly the same building, even), Jessica Jones sees Breaking Bad and Don't Trust The B- In Apartment 23 alum Krysten Ritter step into the title role as Marvel's latest super-powered protagonist. This one comes with a twist, though - Jessica has hung up her superhero costume and decided to carve out a career as a private detective instead.
The reasons for this decision will surely be unfurled over the course of the 13-episode season, which lands in its entirety on Netflix on Friday the 20th of November.

Those of you unable to wait ’til next year for the second season of Daredevil should be pleased to know that there’s more Marvel goodness coming to keep you happy for the rest of 2015. The House of Ideas announced that the next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will make its debut on the small screen later this fall with the first season of Jessica Jones arriving on Netflix this November, according to the latest trailer.
The show is based on the critically-acclaimed, albeit short-lived, comic book series Alias (not to be confused with the Jennifer Garner-starring TV series of the same name). The word from Atlantis is that series 2 is much darker and less silly than the first. Here’s our spoiler-free look at episode 1…
When Atlantis came out of the gates last autumn, it was a light, comic Boys’ Own adventure. Its three male leads - the dishy heroic one, the chubby cowardly one, and the nerdy maths one - faced CGI monsters with a mixture of acrobatics, bickering and slapstick. Forays into the darker world of witchcraft and fate were countered by musical comedy stings and pratfalls. Swords were swung. Mythical creatures were battled. Jokes were cracked. Balconies were vaulted off. And a lukewarm average of 5.4 million UK viewers watched it all.
Hoping to increase that number and earn a third series renewal, Atlantis’ creators (Merlin producers Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps, and Misfits’ writer Howard Overman) are reported to have overhauled the second series, making it meaner, moodier, better-paced,...

Rosamund Pike, the star of the highly anticipated film, Gone Girl, is about to get a lot of attention for her standout role as Amy Elliott Dunne, a disillusioned housewife who suddenly disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary. The part is one intense (and showy) role, and will surely stick with audiences well after the end credits stop rolling.
With all the buzz coming her way, it’s a good time to get to know the 35-year-old English actress making a big splash Stateside.
She’s a Bond Girl
While this is definitely her biggest role, it’s hardly her first. The actress’ first big screen part was Miranda Frost, a villainous Bond Girl in Pierce Brosnan’s final James Bond film Die Another Day. She was the 68th actress to be featured as a woman who finds herself entangled with the famed British spy.

The actress’ first big screen part was Miranda Frost, a villainous Bond Girl in Pierce Brosnan’s final James Bond film Die Another Day. She was the 68th actress to be featured as a woman who finds herself entangled with the famed British spy.

Oldham College is leading the way on national digital developments with involvement at two prestigious events in London recently - one at the House of Commons with the Skills Minister - and the TeenTech Awards with celebrities including Stephen Fry and James May.
Both unique opportunities reflect Oldham College’s expertise in digital and creative industries, which will be showcased later this year with the opening of the UK’s first ever Digital Career College.
On Tuesday 24 June, Oldham College Principal Alun Francis was invited to the House of Commons for a meeting hosted by Lord Baker in association with the Career Colleges Trust. Career Colleges were launched by Lord Baker last year as a new innovation in employer-led education, combining academic and vocational studies within a specific industry specialism. Educational and industry leaders discussed the future of vocational education with Luke Johnson, Chair of the Career Colleges Trust and Guest of Honour, Matthew Hancock MP, Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise. Employers were called upon to make pledges, setting out how they could potentially help a Career College and what they could add.
Alun was joined by members of the Employers Advisory Board created to work on the development of the Digital Career College - Lawrence Jones, the CEO of UK Fast, one of the city’s fastest growing technology companies and Gail Jones, their Commercial Director and Liane Grimshaw, a consultant with 20 years’ experience in the creative and digital industries who is currently setting up SupaReal, a new digital marketing agency.
Oldham College Principal Alun Francis said: “This important initiative is a new relationship between education advisors and employers so that we bring the best education expertise and they bring their knowledge of the working environment and the skills they need. We are very pleased at the quality of employer partners on board and feel that we are the platform to provide a different kind of career choice for young people in Oldham.”
On Wednesday 25 June, Oldham College I.T. student Holly King, who is part of a new Young Digital TaskForce* was Master of Ceremonies for the TeenTech Awards at The Royal Society. Initiated by Ed Miliband, the Young Digital TaskForce was recently set up to help shape the UK’s digital future. Maggie Philbin, broadcaster and TaskForce lead, who is keen for students to be involved in influencing national digital policy, said: “The views of young people are crucial to finding a solution to the technology and digital skills gap.” Maggie was so impressed by Holly’s input at the inaugural TaskForce meeting, that she personally invited her to Mc the award ceremony.
The TeenTech Awards, which included a visit from their patron Hrh Duke of York, involved students from across the UK showcasing their ideas for how to make life better simpler or easier. Their projects were judged by a range of well-known people within the science and technology communities. Holly enjoyed the privilege of introducing and sharing stage space with celebrities including Stephen Fry, James May, Maggie Philbin as well as various BBC presenters.
Oldham College’s pioneering facility, the new Digital Career College, will ensure students are both academically and practically prepared for work within technically and creatively driven industries. Alun Francis said: “We want to ensure that students learn what they need to progress whether that’s on to work, an Apprenticeship, or to university. Our curriculum is organised around different growth sectors of the economy and the pathways which students need to follow to work in these sectors.”
In his recent speech on Apprenticeships at the annual conference of the Association of Employment and Learning Providers, Matthew Hancock talked about how young people should all go on either to university or into an Apprenticeship after leaving school or college. He said: “It’s a huge opportunity, for Britain to become that high skilled economy we all crave and Apprenticeships that are the envy of the world; and for millions of future Apprentices, to know that Apprenticeships will deliver, higher quality across the board, skills relevant to the future, and give everyone in our country the opportunity to reach their potential.”
Oldham College is passionate about providing employment, training and educational opportunities for its communities and aims to help every student reach their full potential. The College offers a learning environment with industry standard facilities and has close links with many local, regional and national employers. These relationships enrich and broaden the courses the College offers as well as preparing students for progression into employment and higher education. For more information please visit Here

Last night, for the first time in several months, Matthew McConaughey wasn't at home watching his favorite show on TV: HBO's True Detective, in which he stars as the brilliant but deeply troubled homicide cop Rustin "Rust" Cohle. "I'm doing what the public's doing," he says. "I received all eight episodes, but I said, 'You know what? I'm gonna check them out each Sunday night and then sit on each episode for a week.' I've found myself going back and watching each one of them about three times during...

Six prizes were handed out at the BAFTA La Jaguar Britannia Awards last night, and luckily only one resulted in death.
While accepting the Charlie Chaplin Britannia for Excellence in Comedy at L.A.’s Beverly Hilton Hotel, Sacha Baron Cohen was given a vintage cane by Grace Cullington, the oldest living actress who worked with the honor’s namesake, and he proceeded to re-create the tramp’s signature penguin waddle around the wheelchair-bound octogenarian. Saturday night's BAFTA La Jaguar Britannia Awards were a veritable who's who of Hollywood's A-list. Stars like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Salma Hayek, Sean Penn, and Benedict Cumberbatch all descended on the Beverly Hills Hotel for the event, which celebrates individuals and companies that are dedicated to advancing the entertainment arts. George, who was also on hand for the screening of his latest project August: Osage County earlier in the day, mingled inside with Julia, Salma, and Sean before accepting his Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film, while Benedict took the stage as the recipient of the British artist of the year honor. Other award winners included director Kathryn Bigelow, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Mandela star Idris Elba, who received the Britannia humanitarian award for his work with The Prince's Trust - the charity was founded by Prince Charles and helps disadvantaged youth in the UK. Well, that was all a bit of a damp squib. The 'Next Time' teaser at the end of last week's Downton suggested that this week's episode was going to be a ripsnorter. A possible death, a last-minute trip to America, the return of the dastardly Green. Everything was finally coming together.
On paper, it sounded exciting. In reality, Downton's fourth series continues to dawdle and meander at the pace of one Lady Mary's dehydrated pigs.
First things first, Dame Maggie Smith isn't going anywhere. The Dowager had a nasty bout of flu, Violet went a bit cuckoo with fever and the hair and make-up team got to have a giggle, dressing her up like Worzel Gummidge on a bad day. But after a few rounds of gin rummy and some mopping of the brow with a damp flannel from Isobel (Penelope Wilton), she's back on her feet again.
Just in case you weren't sure,...

First Light is an organisation that importantly encourages young filmmakers under the age of 25, and helps to develop their talents.
Their annual awards ceremony returned to London this week, when the winners of the 2013 First Light Awards were announced. The young filmmakers were given the opportunity to walk the red carpet in style at the Leicester Square Odeon, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Olivia Williams, Rafe Spall, Jason Maza, and Joely Richardson.
All of the above were on hand to present awards at the ceremony; a perfect example of how our current industry should be (and, clearly, are) helping to nurture the talents for the generations to come.
Because, let’s face it, if you’re presented with an award from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg for Best Comedy, or the Best Drama from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joely Richardson, then you know you’re doing something right.

Review Louisa Mellor 4 Mar 2013 - 22:00
New ITV crime drama Broadchurch comes from Torchwood’s Chris Chibnall, and stars a Who’s Who of Who. Here’s Louisa’s review…
This review contains spoilers.
Everything about ITV’s new crime drama Broadchurch, from its intensely likeable cast to Chris Chibnall’s beautifully precise script and James Strong’s assured direction, tells us we’re in safe hands. Over the next seven weeks, episode one promises, this story is going to be pieced together like a well-tailored suit. Trust us, Broadchurch says, we know what we’re doing.
What they’re doing may not be new - murder in a close-knit community, a battling pair of Detective Inspectors, a steadily turning wheel of suspects, and a policeman with his own demons are all convention staples in modern crime drama – but it’s carried off here with such assurance and poise the...

Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou, who has two children with his boyfriend, says that Rupert Everett is a bit out of touch. “Rupert is a bit of a gay dinosaur. The problem with sniping gorgeously from the sidelines is that, er, one can end up sidelined." Jeez, if he'd called him fat too, he would have managed the trifecta of gay insults.
Chick-Fil-a is still anti-gay, and still supporting anti-gay groups. So I hope you got your fill of hate chicken (my day job coworkers call it that) during the 24 hours when we thought they had changed.
Grindr decided to engage on the Paris Hilton AIDS comments. It's not a way we would do it around here.

With Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists marketed under a variety of different names outside the UK, James looks at a few other alternate movie titles…
Sailing across screens this week we’ve got The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists, which promises viewers a rip-roaring comic caper brought to stop-motion plasticine life by Aardman Animations.
It’s got inept buccaneers, a delightfully daft plot, Brian Blessed providing the voice of the Pirate King and a swordfighting Queen Victoria with a steampunk skirt. With a great big Wallace & Gromit smile I eagerly embrace this eccentric concoction and skip to the cinema guaranteed to have a cracking time.
It’s only in the United Kingdom, though, that audiences will be taking theatre seats to see The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists. Elsewhere around the globe, cinemagoers will be acquainting themselves with The Pirates! Band Of Misfits. That’s the case...

The shortlist for Britain's National Television Awards is out, and it will pit Downton Abbey against Doctor Who for the top prize, though Downton inexplicably received no nominations for the cast. They face off against Merlin and Waterloo Road. Interestingly, John Barrowman and Eve Myles both got nominations for what to me at least was a very forgettable Torchwood.

More Toronto coverage
Toronto -- The Toronto International Film Festival dropped the puck on its 35th edition Thursday night with "Score: A Hockey Musical," a homegrown movie that puts Canada's national game to music.
"The Mighty Ducks" worked for Disney, so Toronto organizers this year opted for high-schticking over high art, with Michael McGowan's campy tale about hockey players spontaneously bursting into song as they fight and fall in love.
McGowan led his cast up the opening-night red carpet outside Roy Thomson Hall, including Olivia Newton-John, who plays a hockey mom in "Score" and showed up in a leopard-skin gown, Nelly Furtado and newcomer Noah Reid, who plays a gifted hockey player who finds stardom on the ice has a price -- the need to drop the gloves to get to the top.
Being Canadian, "Score" takes a sideswipe at violence by urging pacifism, on and off the ice.

A renowned Scottish actor and director, he regularly commentated on state occasions for BBC television
Tom Fleming, who has died of cancer aged 82, was an outstanding figure in the Scottish theatre of the second half of the 20th century, the first television "face" of Jesus of Nazareth in a 1953 mini-series, and well known as a BBC television and radio commentator at many royal and ceremonial occasions since he first broadcast, for the BBC, during the Queen's coronation in 1953.
He was a Baptist lay preacher, a deeply private man of great moral integrity and stature. This much was clear not only on stage but also as he spoke in his flawless, rich and velvety baritone voice at the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Queen Mother. So assiduous was he in his properly felt sense of duty that he declined the invitation to appear in a play by Mikhail Bulgakov...
