Elektra is not my favourite Strauss opera, that's Der Rosenkavalier, but it has a compelling story and magnificent music so I highly appreciate it. Having watched and being hugely impressed with the 1981 production, I viewed this 1994 production and I found it every bit as impressive, if not more so. The costumes and sets are highly atmospheric, and the video directing is excellent. The music is powerfully performed by the always reliable orchestra, and James Levine once again shows a passionate conducting job. The performances are superb. James King has been better vocally, but he is good here. Donald McIntyre is wonderful as Orest, Deborah Voight is a richly sung and vividly acted Chrysothemis and Brigitte Fassbaender shows herself to be a powerful singing actress. Top honours go to Hildegard Brehrens, who is magnificent in the title role, she sings brilliantly throughout and the whole performances is deeply felt. All in all, superb. 10/10 Bethany Cox
