For a long time Naomi Watts seemed destined to be known as Nicole Kidman‘s less successful close friend. Born in the United Kingdom but raised in Australia, Watts struggled for many years to find her footing as an actress. While her friend rose to fame, Watts just couldn’t seem to catch a break.

She did work some what steadily, but it wasn’t until she signed on for the lead in a television pilot by David Lynch that Watts found fame and acclaim. “Mulholland Drive” never made it as a television series but the pilot was released as a feature film, becoming an either love it or hate it classic. The film was named Best Picture by both the New York and National Society of Film Critics Awards, and Watts won the Best Actress Award from the National Society. Shockingly Watts was cast on the basis of a photo that the director saw.

“Directing this video and putting it together and writing it was the most wonderful experience. And that is because of all the people that I got to make it with, and that includes Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles who were amazing cameos,” she said. “That includes my amazing cinematographer/Dp Rodrigo Prieto, who goes out of his way to work with female directors. He’s a genius, and I can’t believe I got to work with him.

“Pedro Páramo” is not the kind of movie you’d expect to be the directorial debut of the cinematographer who shot “Barbie” — unless you know that that cinematographer, Rodrigo Prieto, also shot “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Silence,” “Babel,” “21 Grams” and many other films that studiously avoid hot pink in any and all forms.

Rodrigo has been one of the most prolific and adventurous cinematographers of recent years, and if he’s drawing inspiration from any of the directors he worked for, it’s probably Iñárritu. “Pedro Páramo,” which had its world premiere on Saturday at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, carries echoes of “Bardo” in the fact that it is simultaneously personal and mystical.

Naomi Watts has appeared opposite some of the greatest stars in cinema — Sean Penn, Viggo Mortensen, Leonardo DiCaprio, even King Kong. But none of those leading men prepared her for Bing, the 145-pound Great Dane she co-stars with in “The Friend,” a drama about heartbreak, art and a very big dog that screens at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.

And getting comfortable with Bing was a six-week process that involved more than handing out a few treats. Bill Berloni, the veteran animal trainer whose job it was to prepare Bing for his close-up, insisted on having Watts meet two times a day for 20 minutes each with the dog, so she could learn how to control the lumbering giant on the streets of New York City, where “The Friend” was shot.

“Initially, I thought, is this necessary?” Watts admits. “I’m an animal lover. I’m not put off by a little fur and slobber.

The International Cinematographers Guild (Icg) will recognize two acclaimed professionals at award ceremonies later this year. Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will receive the Distinguished Filmmaker Award. M. David Mullen will receive the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Mentor Award.

Prieto has worked on blockbuster films and critically-acclaimed independents. His credits range from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Prieto first found success with director Alejandro González Iñárritu in 2000s films like “Babel,” “21 Grams,” and “Amores Perros.” He has shown versatility across genres with work on movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Argo,” and “8 Mile.”

Prieto is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Paramo.” He also received a 2024 MTV Video Music Award nomination for his cinematography on a Taylor Swift music video. The Icg says Prieto represents excellence in his field.

The International Cinematographers Guild will hand its Distinguished Filmmaker Award to Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto at this year’s Emerging Cinematographer Awards.

Born and raised in Mexico, Prieto was at the center of the early 2000’s renaissance of Mexican cinema, working on now-celebrated features like Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros with Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Tom Cruise will be starring in the new film from director Alejandro Iñárritu for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, with this being Iñárritu’s first English language movie since The Revenant, which hit theatres back in 2015. Now Deadline has revealed the names of six of Cruise’s co-stars, breaking the news that he has been joined in the cast by John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name), with Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) in final negotiations to join in as well. Details on the characters they’ll be playing are being kept under wraps.

This will be Cruise’s first time working with all of these actors except for Plemons. Cruise and Plemons were in the 2017 film American Made together.

Exclusive: Danny Huston (The Dead Don’t Hurt) has signed on to star alongside Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser and Kevin Durand in the untitled Naked Gun reboot from Paramount Pictures.

Details as to the film’s plot, as well as Huston’s role in it, are under wraps. But Neeson will play Detective Frank Drebin, as previously announced, with Hauser as his partner Ed. It’s not yet clear who Anderson will be playing, though it’s understood that Durand will be taking on one of the film’s villain roles.

The feature film will world premiere on September 20 in a gala screening attended by the director and the cast, led by French actress Noémie Merlant in the titular role.

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.

The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.

“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” pits the incendiary author Truman Capote against a “gaggle” of New York socialites, but there is one “swan” that is truly at the heart of the roost, namely, Babe Paley, played by Naomi Watts. Donoghue died Dec. 28 in Los Angeles, his son Alex Donoghue announced.

After a starry awards gala kicked off the Palm Springs Film Festival, several of this year’s awards contenders and friends reconnected at Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch & Creative Impact Awards Presented by Directv, Friday at the Parker Palm Springs hotel.

Before the presentation, the honorees posed on the red carpet and stopped for questions with Variety’s senior culture & events editor Marc Malkin. Anna Kendrick, a new member of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch, recalled the first time she yelled action on set for her film “Woman of the Hour.”

Ava DuVernay’s latest film, Origin, followed its Sept. 6 world premiere at the Venice Film Festival — where DuVernay became the first African American filmmaker to have a film play in competition, and where Neon acquired its U.S. distribution rights — with its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Roy Thomson Hall on Monday.

As with much of DuVernay’s work, including but not limited to the narrative feature Selma (2014), the documentary feature 13th (2016) and the limited series When They See Us (2019), Origin is a project about race — or, as its protagonist Isabel Wilkerson (played by the gifted actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who was Oscar-nominated for 2021’s King Richard) sees it, caste.

The scale and ambition of Origin, though, is arguably greater than any of DuVernay’s earlier efforts: it explores the story behind — and the history/continent-hopping story recounted within — Wilkerson’s 2020 bestselling book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent.

The movie begins with a gunshot but no one knows where it has gone. There are three characters in the room where the gun has been fired and they are linked to each other. This is the whole premise of the story. 21 Grams deals with the issue of death and is the second in the series of films the first being Amores Perros and the last one being Babel. They don’t deal with death directly they go about it in several circuitous ways. In this one, the whole film is written in a non-linear format. It is one of the few films that made this writing form very fashionable. There have been many films that have now used it to bring more powerful stories but none of them have come close. A brand new “The Boys” spinoff series, the second season of “Wheel of Time” and football highlight a robust lineup of new movies and shows coming to Amazon Prime Video in September. “Gen V,” a spinoff of “The Boys” set at a college, premieres on Sept. 29, while new episodes of “The Wheel of Time” Season 2 are rolling out all month long after the season premiere on Sept. 1.

Thursday Night Football is streaming starting Sept. 14, and a whole host of library movies worth checking out – from “Four Weddings and a Funeral” to “Dracula” to “10 Things I Hate About You” – are now streaming.

There’s also the premiere of the original film “Cassandro” starring Gael Garcia Bernal as a gay wrestler, and the acclaimed drama “A Thousand and One” comes to Prime Video on Sept. 19.

It’s a deceptively big month on Prime Video in September! To kick things off, The Wheel of Time will be back for a second season on the service, while a live-action The Boys spinoff series called Gen V will be capping off the original series content later in the month.

But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. There is no shortage this September of new (and old) things to watch on Prime Video! The Amazon streamer is adding over 300 new TV series and films to its library this month, from highly anticipated season premieres to classic movies.

Pamela Blair, who originated the role of Valerie Clarke in the Broadway musical A Chorus Line and appeared in several soap operas, has died. She was 73.

The actress died Sunday at her home in Mesa, Arizona, The Washington Post reported. Blair had a lengthy battle with complications related to Clippers disease, a nervous system disorder, her friend Scott Withers told the newspaper.

Born on Dec. 5, 1949, in Bennington, Vermont, Blair, who had a passion for the arts from a young age, moved to New York as a teenager to pursue a career in acting and dancing. She studied drama at the Hb Studio and attended the National Ballet Academy, where she met choreographer Michael Bennett, who would becoming a frequent collaborator.

Pamela Blair, who originated the role of the surgically enhanced Valerie Clark in the Broadway smash A Chorus Line, died Sunday at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, following a lengthy illness. She was 73.

Her death was reported by friends on social media, including her A Chorus Line co-star Baayork Lee. “I am very sad to say my Sagittarian sister Pam Blair has gone to play with her [A Chorus Line] colleagues among the clouds,” wrote Lee in a Facebook post. Sharing a Dec. 5 birthday, the two actors “always wrote to one another no matter where we were on that day,” Lee said, recalling how Blair ” brought the house down every night” with the showstopping performance of “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three.”

“A Cielo Abierto,” the latest film from Oscar-nominated Mexican screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (“Babel”), is being brought onto Berlin’s European Film Market by Film Factory Entertainment.

Produced by Argentina’s K&s Films, whose credits include “Wild Tales,” “The Clan” and “The Summit” — the last by “Argentina, 1985” director Santiago Mitre — “A Cielo Abierto” is directed by Mariana Arriaga and Santiago Arriaga, Guillermo Arriaga’s daughter and son, making their feature film debut.

“A Cielo Abierto” turns on two teen brothers who take a road trip to the Mexico-u.S. border to track down the man responsible for the car accident that caused their father’s death.

Joined by their beautiful newly-met stepsister, their trip becomes a “tense revenge journey to adulthood,” the synopsis runs.

During the journey, the trio, from Mexico’s upper-middle class, will also encounter “violence, tenderness, a wild inclement landscape, instinct, animals and seriousness,” Guillermo Arriaga said.

Nine years ago, the director Alejandro González Iñárritu spent eight months in the Canadian wilderness with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. It was minus 40 degrees, the sort of cold that cuts to the bone; the sort of cold that makes it hard to open your eyes, as DiCaprio once described it.
