Cain from Nowhere

The best of this low-budget film is summed up in admirably succint style by Guy Bellinger on the imdb page .The second part is too over the top and shows a tendency to dwell on the sordid side of life.

Gérard Blain remains one of the great lost actors of the French cinema,and he was about to become an unsung but excellent director ;his first effort which should be praised by the LGBT community, depicts a gay relationship with a great modesty :"les amis" (1971)).

He was ideally cast as Cain , the tormented soul , and mainly in the first part, he's brillant ,but sadly unsupported by a non existent directing and ,with one exception,a faceless mediocre cast .

There are hints at great directors :it was the first time Blain had played opposite his ex-wife Bernadette Laffont since Chabrol's "le beau Serge" ;and the mother's whip will remind the cine buff of Duvivier' s "voici le temps des assassins" ,Blain's first important part.

The second part and the final scene are downright disappointing ;one expected more.
