Conceived as a sequel to Terra Nostra (1999), titled "Terra Nostra 2. However, Benedito Ruy Barbosa felt he could not give continuity to his characters from that series, creating a new one with the same themes and setting. The series is was still aired as "Terra Nostra 2" in some countries.
While filming the famous scene in which Camilli smashes Toni's sculpture of Maria, Ana Paula Arósio sprained her ankle and accidentally broke some of Reynaldo Gianecchini's teeth. He returned to filming only three days later.
