Will Friedle was originally attached to play Mike, but he had to drop out due to another commitment (Friedle had been cast on The Random Years (2002) that same time). The pilot was initially shot with Josh Radnor who was unknown at the time, but the network decided to replace him with better-known actor Eddie Kaye Thomas.
During production of the show, Jamie Kennedy played a joke on Sean McGuire where Kennedy messed up a scene which underwent many takes. The joke was shown in the eighth episode of the first season of The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (2002).
