After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.
Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

10. Idle Hands (1999)
As we all know, idle hands are the devil’s toy. This movie takes the biblical proverb’s meaning quite literally: one fine morning, the laziest teenager in the US realizes that his right hand has become all too independent.
Soon, he finds out that it has a murderous intent for anyone in its reach, and he must find a way to stop it.
You can watch Idle Hands on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. Scary Movie (2000)
Just as the title implies, Scary Movie is a parody on one of the most popular horror genres back in the day: slashers. A group of teenagers who accidentally killed a man a year ago finds themselves stalked and methodically exterminated by a mumbling killer in a Scream mask. Why the Scream mask, you may ask? Because why not.
You can watch Scary Movie on Max, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.

The late 1990s and early 2000s were a weird era for films. There is definitely an influence from Y2K, and it seemed like there was an attitude that anything goes from some and a tightening of the belt from others. The world was in an odd place, and this influenced everything in culture like music, television, and films. 2002 gave us a wide variety of horror, like Queen of the Damned, Fear Dot Com, Cabin Fever, Bubba Ho-Tep, Dog Soldiers, and Bloody Mallory. This was the end of an era and the start of another for David Arquette it seemed. A time when he tested the “leading man” waters. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go as planned as box office bomb after box office bomb came. Films like Ravenous, Ready to Rumble, 3000 Miles to Graceland, See Spot Run, and The Grey Zone all featured Arquette in some form but...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

The Bubba Ho-Tep episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Sometimes you find out that your favorite movies were adaptations of novels. While everyone knows when they are getting a Stephen King adaptation, a lot of the time you won’t know that a movie is based on an existing story until you get hit with it in the credits. Bubba Ho-Tep (watch it Here) is one of those properties. All of the advertising and certainly the feeling of the movie is that it’s a Bruce Campbell and Don Coscarelli movie, but the short story was written by Joe R. Landsdale. Gary Kent, an actor, director and, most notably, stuntman whose career is thought to have been an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, died Thursday at an assisted care facility in Austin, Texas. He was 89.
Born on June 7, 1933, in Walla Walla, Washington, Kent’s early film credits include 1959’s Battle Flame, and roles in other low-budget films of the 1960s including The Black Klansman (1966) and biker film The Savage Seven (1968). In 1969, he served as a stunt double for Bruce Dern in the now-cult-classic Richard Rush-directed exploitation film Psych-Out.
Among his other credits were such drive-in movie favorites as Peter Bogdanovich’s first film Targets (1968), featuring Boris Karloff, 1970’s Hell’s Bloody Devils and, the following year, The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant and Angels’ Wild Women.
Though he had numerous small acting parts through the era, his most endurable contributions to Hollywood would come as a...

Gary Kent, the iconic B-movie stunt performer, actor and director who worked with Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Rush and Monte Hellman and served as an inspiration for Brad Pitt’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has died. He was 89.
Kent died Thursday evening at an assisted care facility in Austin, his son Chris Kent told The Hollywood Reporter.
Kent suffered two of his most painful injuries as a stunt performer in Rush films. He sliced up his arm on broken glass during a barfight fracas in Hells Angels on Wheels (1967) and was run over by an out-of-control motorcycle in The Savage Seven (1968), where he shared scenes with Penny Marshall.
His half-century stunt career came to an end on the set of Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) when he tumbled down a hill and damaged his leg, but he kept at it as a stunt coordinator, working as recently...

Greetings, friends. If you're someone who returns to this sporadic column seeking Blu-ray info, I want to thank you. You're swell! And as always, I will continue to bring you the latest in Blu-rays. This week has one of the best movies of 2021: Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." But wait, there's more! There's a 4K release of Hype Williams' amazing cult classic "Belly," Disney's recent animated flick "Strange World," Elvis fighting a mummy in "Bubba Ho-Tep," and of course, the "Black Panther" sequel "Wakanda Forever." That's a fine line-up if you ask me.
The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg has been talking about making a movie about his childhood for decades, and he finally got around to it with "The Fabelmans." But this isn't hagiography, or Spielberg talking about what a talented kid he was (even though he was). Instead, this is Spielberg grappling with what is arguably the most persistent...

Like a bag of candy that looks good, tastes great, and somehow also improves your mental health, Joe R. Lansdale writes words good. He spins tales that captivate and surprise, whatever their length and form, so it's no wonder that his works served as the source material for great genre screen adaptations, from Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) to Coscarell's Incident On and Off a Mountain Road (2005) to Jim Mickle's Cold in July (2014) to the wonderful series Hap and Leonard. A stack of his books sits proudly in my closet. If you have not yet made your acquaintance with...

Bruce Campbell may be done with Ash Williams and the Evil Dead franchise, but that doesn’t mean he’s leaving the world of horror. Aside from Ash, Campbell has also appeared in great B-movies like Maniac Cop, Congo and the excellent Bubba Ho-Tep. Now, it appears that his next major project will be Bruce vs. Frankenstein, a sequel to 2007 horror-comedy My Name is Bruce.
In that movie, Campbell played a fictionalized version of himself and poked fun at his public image. His indelible association with Ash Williams came back to bite him in the ass when a group of teenagers kidnap him to help them defeat a real-life monster. It was a fun romp, but it looks like this sequel will go way beyond the original movie.

Of all the actors in the world who’d volunteer to take on the role of the Man Of Steel, probably not many think that Bruce Campbell would throw his hat into the ring. Bruce Campbell’s movie characters Ash Williams and Elvis Presley will come face to face in a awesomely crazy new crossover comic book series called Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep!
I love that comics will have fun telling wild crossover stories like this, but it also makes me sad that no one will ever try to bring it to life in movie form.
In Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep, “Ash embarks on a soul-searching road trip to Texas on a hunch that Elvis Presley may still be alive and kicking (and supposedly vanquished a mummy)! What follows is a series of universe-spanning events that involve an Elvis jumpsuit with special time-travel abilities, a trip to 70’s Vegas, plus the reveal of an evil new Book of the Dead, the Necronomicon Ho-Tep.”

Unfortunately, the blaze destroyed a horror landmark as the structures were used in Don Coscarelli‘s Bubba Ho-Tep (2002), which starred Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley and Ossie Davis as a man claiming to be President John […]...

Horror is often considered a young person’s genre. From about the 1950s onward, the target audience for most theatrical horror releases has been young people—teenagers on dates at the drive-in gave way to gorehounds in the ’80s, to the kids who flocked to any and every PG-13 horror movie to receive a wide release in the 2000s. It’s not just the audience that’s primarily made of young people, either; teenagers became the most common protagonists in horror movies, particularly with the rise of the slasher film. So inextricably linked were the two that Roger Ebert began referring to the genre as the “Dead Teenager Movie,” because audiences were more or less paying to see people their own age screw around, have a good time, and get hacked up by a guy in a mask. These were movies as much for teenagers as they were about teenagers.

Though he was just 25 years old when Phantasm hit theaters, many don't know that the cult 1979 horror film was actually director Don Coscarelli's third movie. In fact, at the age of 19, he became the youngest director ever to have a film distributed by a major studio (a statistic that's often been alleged but which I cannot independently confirm) when Universal acquired his teen drama Jim, the World's Greatest for distribution. That film, which was financed by Coscarelli's father -- who put up the money for production after having "a good year in the stock market," in Coscarelli's words -- landed the teenage filmmaker and his co-director Craig Mitchell an office on the studio's lot to finish the movie. It was an unusually auspicious Big Hollywood start to a career that ended up taking a less-mainstream turn as the years went on. "I've been working my way downward ever since,...

In 1979, Don Coscarelli was 23 years old when he made a haunting, off-beat tale of two brothers facing off against an inter-dimensional threat known as The Tall Man, who Angus Scrimm (Coscarelli’s best friend) played with psychopathic intensity. “Phantasm” became a cult phenomenon, spawning four sequels; the purported finale, “Phantasm: Ravager” (Well Go USA), opens this week. But Scrimm’s no longer around to help promote it, and Coscarelli’s left on his own to contemplate a rocky career.
Whether or not it’s truly the last, “Ravager” does mark Scrimm’s final performance. The actor died in January at the age of 89, not long after production wrapped. When “Phantasm: Ravager” premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, alongside a new 4k restoration of the original film (aided by Jj Abrams’ production studio, Bad Robot), the screenings had the air of a wake.

Back in 1979, an up-and-coming filmmaker by the name of Don Coscarelli unleashed Phantasm, his terrifying and surreal exploration of fear, onto unsuspecting horror fans. Now, over 37 years later, we are about to celebrate the release of Phantasm: Ravager, the final installment of the iconic franchise that recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2016 Fantastic Fest. It’s a project that Phantasm fans have been waiting to see for a long time, and I have to say that by and large, longtime Phanatics should be absolutely pleased with how Ravager has turned out.
Co-writer/director David Hartman’s genuine passion for this franchise is engrained in every single moment of this sequel, which perfectly embodies the scrappy “can-do” attitude that has gotten the Phantasm series this far. The film is also a beautiful tribute to the legacy of the franchise’s villain, The Tall Man, portrayed by Angus Scrimm, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The terrifying Tall Man makes his creepy return in the trailer for long-awaited horror sequel Phantasm: Ravager...
One of horror cinema’s most unsung, yet influential franchises makes a return glistening with global devastation in Phantasm: Ravager. The trailer for the upcoming release of the belated fourth sequel of the Phantasm film franchise showcases an upgraded return for writer/director Don Coscarelli’s illusion-imbued cinematic shockfests.
The trailer for Phantasm: Ravager, the franchise’s first entry since 1998’s Phantasm IV: Oblivion, sticks to the tried and true, once again focusing on the series’ repertory ponytail-rocking protagonist in Reggie Bannister’s 'Reggie'. Apparently having spent the last 18 years wandering the Earth like Caine from Kung Fu, it seems that Reggie is ready for what is being billed as the final showdown between him and The Tall Man.

It is the most requested image in the National Archives, likely because of the tantalizing possibility and cheerful incongruity it summons. Elvis ‘The King’ Presley and Richard ‘Tricky Dick’ Nixon, two of the more confounding and eccentric figures of their respective time, standing there in the middle of the Oval Office shaking hands and looking mutually magnanimous. What had they discussed? How did these two men—singled out and scrutinized in differing ways by a public fascinated by them—approach one another? No official record of what went on during that meeting exists, but Liza Johnson’s enticing conjectural account of it is the centerpiece of Elvis & Nixon, a fascinatingly weird little movie that both teases and satisfies our pop curiosity.
The strength of Elvis & Nixon is rooted in a playful imagination that strives to work plausibly within the confines of what we know about these two men while also...

As with most things in life, the fault rests with Brian Salisbury. I’ve had Don Coscarelli‘s The Beastmaster on the brain since late January when Salisbury and Robert Cargill covered the movie on their Junkfood Cinema podcast, and the recent announcement of a beautiful new 4k restoration of Coscarelli’s most famous film, Phantasm, sealed the deal. It was time to re-watch some Coscarelli. My favorite of his films is also his most recent, John Dies at the End, but I decided to go back to the one I thoroughly enjoyed as a pre-teen thanks to its PG-rated sword, sorcery, and topless bathing action. Coscarelli is always a fun listen — we’ve previously covered his commentaries for Phantasm and Phantasm II — and he’s joined here by his frequent collaborator, Paul Pepperman. Keep reading to see what I heard on The Beastmaster commentary. The Beastmaster (1982) Commentator: Don Coscarelli (director, co-writer...
