Sundance documentaries are alive and well. And it looks like there’s some acquisition action this year, too. Which Sundance documentaries have the best shot at landing in Oscar contention this year? It helps to get bought early or to have an international footprint.
A rickety theatrical market for non-fiction features and a dwindling number of active documentary buyers meant that many Sundance 2023 films did not get picked up for distribution, or met serious delays before companies came through. As the top American film festival for docs, Sundance usually supplies as many as four out of the final five Oscar nominees each year.
And usually, by late summer, Oscar promotion is well underway. But last year, “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,” which was rumored to be an HBO Documentary Films pickup for months, wasn’t announced until August 29, when other Sundance grads had been campaigning all summer.

Exclusive: Nelvana, an international producer, distributor and licensor of children’s animated and live-action content, is teaming with Andrews McMeel Entertainment to develop a series of CG animated features based on Trapped in a Video Game, the series of bestselling books by Dustin Brady.
A five-book set published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, which launched in 2018, Trapped in a Video Game illustrates that getting sucked into one is not as much fun as you might think. Sure, there are jetpacks, hover tanks, and infinite lives, but what happens when the game starts to turn on you? In the books, 12-year-old Jesse Rigsby finds out just how dangerous video games — and the people making those games — can be. Expect the films to deliver the same action, plot twists and humor.

When American soul and R&b icon Luther Vandross sang, he didn’t just produce beautiful musical sounds. He caressed and coddled each note with his famously velvety tenor voice, considering where to linger, when to whisper, or to gradually crescendo with an impeccable and ever-influential technique. In other words, he didn’t only sing, but created something ethereal, something that both pushed the form and felt like it gently poured straight out of his soul.
Considering the stamp he put on the American music industry, it feels strange that there hasn’t yet been a definitive documentary about Vandross’ unsung legacy until Dawn Porter’s “Luther: Never Too Much,” which had its world premiere recently at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. But that delay is perhaps fortuitous — after experiencing Porter’s loving portrait of the virtuosic musician, producer, and songwriter, you can’t imagine Vandross’ story being told by anyone else.

Charlize Theron’s 2002 critically panned thriller, Trapped, finds new popularity on Netflix’s Top 10
Sometimes, movies that fail to make a splash when they’re initially released find a new audience later in life. It isn’t unheard of that a movie that flopped and exhibited a low critical response can gain a cult following or even newfound popularity. John Carpenter’s career is kind of filled with movies like this. The early 2000s had seen a slew of mid-budget thrillers in an era before mega-budget franchises took over cinemas. One of those films is a 2002 psychological thriller titled Trapped.
Trapped would seemingly get lost in a sea of movies like Along Came a Spider or Enough, as well as similar crime-thriller genre movies made popular by Ashley Judd with films like Double Jeopardy, High Crimes and Twisted. According to ScreenRant, the Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon film has found new popularity when it cracked Netflix’s Top 10 Movies along with new movies like The Equalizer 3,...

Famed musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber revealed that he believe that “poltergeists” have haunted him in both his home and theaters where his shows have been performed.
A poltergeist is often recognized as a spirit that physically affects its surroundings and is translated from German into “noisy ghost.”
Lloyd Webber claimed that he had a London home on Easton Square “which had a poltergeist,” he told The Telegraph.
He also stated that the spirit would take script papers and rearrange them in different rooms where they didn’t belong.
The composer of The Phantom of the Opera had a priest come in to bless the house and cast the spirit out. Webber said that the spirit left him and his house alone after that.
This isn’t the only creepy occurrence in the Broadway world. According to Playbill, there are at least nine other theaters that have had paranormal activities associated with them.

“Crip Camp,” “Gunda” and “Time” are among the films that have made Doc NYC’s 2020 “Short List,” an annual attempt by the New York-based festival to identify the nonfiction films most likely to play a significant part in awards season.
Those three films were also included in the Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations for Best Documentary Feature, and on the International Documentary Association’s shortlist from which the Ida chooses nominees for the Ida Documentary Awards. They are the only three movies to land on all three lists.
Nine additional films on the Doc NYC list were also singled out either by the Ida or Critics Choice: “Boys State,” “Collective,” “Dick Johnson Is Dead,” “The Fight,” “MLK/FBI,” “76 Days,” “The Social Dilemma,” “The Truffle Hunters” and “Welcome to Chechnya.”
Other films on the Doc NYC list, which is made up of 15 documentaries, are “I Am Greta,” “On the Record” and “A Thousand Cuts.

Despite taking place in 1964, One Night in Miami felt eerily similar to present day, according to Aldis Hodge. In Regina King’s feature directorial debut, Hodge plays NFL legend Jim Brown who’s introduced in the film during a return trip to his hometown of St. Simons Island, Georgia. Upon his arrival, Jim visits the plantation-like estate of his neighbor, Mr. Carlton (Beau Bridges), who seemingly welcomes Brown onto his porch for a glass of lemonade and some small talk. Even though he was proud to say that he was from the same island as the great Jim Brown, Carlton quickly bowled ...

The 19th season premiere delivered 8 million total viewers and a 1.2 rating -- off almost 30% vs. last fall's premiere.
As you will probably recall, the 18th cycle pivoted to at-home live performances because of production shutdowns due to Covid-19.
Despite the big erosion, the series still managed to win the night.
The Weakest Link benefited from the increased lead-in, rising 33% in the demo to 4.3 million viewers and a 0.8 rating in the demo.
Over on ABC, Dancing With the Stars had 6.1 million viewers and a 1.0 rating, which is on par with its season average.
Emergency Call inched up a tenth to 3 million viewers and 0.5 rating.
Both ABC series are likely to be adjusted downwards when the finals are released later today due to NFL preemption.

There is a basic challenge that Hansal Mehta throws, while narrating the story of Big Bull Harshad Mehta. Instead of letting his story unfold through the mind games of his protagonist, which would have made the series lucid and enjoyable for all, he often tends to immerse the narrative in a mire of heavy stock market lingo and logistics.
Watch Scam 1992 – The Harshad Mehta Story official trailer

Perhaps Hansal Mehta was deliberately being uncompromising, to underline the fact that his 10-part web series is a rare Bollywood effort that truly tick-marks all criteria of the genre that Hollywood defines as the financial thriller. Yet, from Wall Street to Margin Call to Equity to The Wolf Of Wall Street -- you could even include Money Monster by a stretch -- we have seen enough instances where crime drama woven around money does not necessarily let money...

Back in the 1990s, CBS did very well with a docu-series called Rescue 911, hosted by William Shatner, which follows calls to 911 and emergencies. A revival of that series didn't come to fruition but now, ABC is trying their own show on a similar concept. How will this new docu-series perform in the ratings? Will Emergency Call be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
An unscripted TV series, Emergency Call documents the first few crucial minutes of emergencies as told through the lens of America's 911 call takers. An estimated 240 million calls are made every year to 911 call centers across the country. Hosted by actor Luke Wilson, the program follows the dramatic moments leading up to the arrival of help rather than the events after the firefighters, police, or emergency medical services teams arrive.

Four Friends. One Phone Call. 60 Seconds. Stay Alive. Check out the trailer:
Four Friends. One Phone Call. 60 Seconds to Stay Alive. In the fall of 1987, a group of small-town friends must survive the night in the home of a sinister couple after a tragic accident occurs in The Call. Needing only to make a single phone call, the request seems horribly ordinary until they realize that this call could change their life…or end it. This simple task quickly spirals into terror as their worst nightmares become reality as they enter the realm of The Call.
This spine-tingling tale stars horror icons Lin Shaye and Tobin Bell, along with Chester Rushing (Stranger Things), Erin Sanders (Big Time Rush) and Judd Lormand (Seal Team). The Call opens exclusively in theaters and drive-ins nationwide October 2 from Cinedigm (Nasdaq: Cidm).
Shaye is best known for her role of Elise Rainier from the worldwide box office hit franchise Insidious.

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last thing they texted to the last thing they binge-watched. This week, singer JoJo takes our call.
Few people have been topping the charts and breaking records since the casual young age of 13, but JoJo is one of them. From her breakout hit "Leave (Get Out)" that we all dramatically sang along to on windows-down car rides to her comeback album Mad Love in 2016, she never ceases to bring us some perfect, relatable bops. So it's no surprise that her latest album, Good to Know, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard R&b albums chart.
Now, she's released a deluxe edition of the album, with new songs and collabs featuring fellow badass women Demi Lovato and Tinashe. In celebration of the album release, we...

The origin of the drama Buoyancy can be traced back to when Australian filmmaker Rodd Rathjen came across an article a few years ago about Cambodian workers and their life on a Thai fishing trawler. He became riveted by the unbelievable story and upon more research, he said in a statement: “The scale of modern slavery and exploitation in Thailand is vast and hard to grasp.”
Written and directed by Rathjen, Buoyancy follows a spirited Cambodian teenager Chakra (Sarm Heng) who works the rice fields with his family but is looking for independence. He seeks the help of a local broker who said that they can get him paid work in a Thai factory. He heads to Thailand in hopes to find his fortuitous independence but when he gets there, he and his newfound friend Kea (Mony Ros), discover they’ve been duped. ABC has called in Luke Wilson to save its fall season.
The Disney-owned network has announced a new unscripted series titled “Emergency Call,” which will be hosted and executive produced by Wilson, and will premiere Sept. 28 in the 10 p.m. time slot.
News of the pick up comes exactly a week after ABC unveiled a fall schedule packed with unscripted content. The network, like all its rivals, is having to hold the majority of its scripted regulars for midseason due to Covid-19 production difficulties. “Emergency Call” joins “Dancing With the Stars,” which just announced an eventful lineup for the new season, on Monday nights.

Luke Wilson is set to host and executive produce a new unscripted series about 9-1-1 operators at ABC, the network announced Thursday.
Titled “Emergency Call,” the hour-long documentary series will follow “the extreme, suspenseful and sometimes humorous stories that flood 911 call centers,” focusing on the moments before first responders arrive on the scene, according to ABC.
The series is set to premiere on Monday, Sept. 28.
“Since I was a kid, I have always been interested in people who help. People who save people,” Wilson said in a statement. “When you’re younger, you might be drawn toward superheroes or fictional characters, but as you get older you come to realize that people who help, real-life heroes, are just regular people who do extraordinary things. 911 call takers don’t just save people; they calm and console people until they are safe. They are the first link in the chain of first responders.

Hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the Korean film industry, which celebrated its centenary with Bong Joon-ho’s history-making Academy awards for “Parasite” earlier this year, has been in an unprecedented crisis since February.
Since the South Korean government adopted tough social-distancing measures in late February, when the coronavirus was at its peak, cinema business has been largely affected due to local audiences’ growing fear of physical contact with strangers, including theater staff and other audience members.
Major Korean films that were set for theatrical release in March and April had to push their schedules. Cinemas tried to fill up their screening slots with reruns, which have lower marketing costs. Films that delayed their release include “Time to Hunt,” which premiered in Berlinale right before the coronavirus crisis; Lee Chung-hyun’s feature debut “Call”; novelist-turned-director Son Won-pyung’s thriller “Intruder”; and mother-daughter drama “Innocence.”

Welcome to this week’s All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have more from Tony Khan’s weekly drug trip. Also, there are a shit-load of perverts who have been allegedly revealed, including Jim Cornette & Synn, Dave Lagana, Jordan Devlin & numerous others in Nxt UK and David Starr (along with Alberto Del Rio a few months back and Jay Lethal numerous times over the years). The stories are horrifying and include male and female victims. If you are reading this and have ever been abused, don’t hold that sh*t in. Say that sh*t so everybody can see it and it can’t be hidden anymore. Every time someone gets away with a crime, that leaves them available to hurt more people. Hell, if anyone ever felt like I had ever done anything to them, I’d want them...

On the first Crew Call podcast of the Emmy season we speak with Oscar nominated The Favorite screenwriter Tony McNamara about his new Hulu/Media Rights Capital series The Great which follows Elle Fanning as 18th Century Empress of Russia Catherine the Great as she carefully plots a coup d’etat to take down her boorish husband, Peter III (Nicholas Hoult), in a mission to enlighten the country with the mores that are liberating her European homeland. Similar to what he did with The Favorite, McNamara has reinvigorated period drama with a riveting sense of absurdist wit and edginess. We talk with McNamara, who also penned Disney’s upcoming 101 Dalmatians live action spinoff Cruella, about how The Great originated (it was well before The Favorite) and speaks to a number of today’s issues from Time’s Up and #MeToo to off-kilter despots.

Mubi also reveals ’Portrait Of A Lady On Fire’ has become its most-viewed film in the UK to date.
Corneliu Porumboiu’s The Whistlers topped UK streaming platform Curzon Home Cinema’s (Chc) most-watched films over the weekend, after bypassing a theatrical release due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The Romanian crime thriller, which debuted in competition at Cannes last year, was originally due to receive a UK day-and-date release on June 26 via Curzon. But ongoing cinema closures meant the film launched exclusively on Chc on May 8, seven weeks early, and performed strongly as audiences look to streaming platforms for new titles during lockdown.
