We can’t be the only ones who never expected to type the words Bob The Builder and Jennifer Lopez in the same sentence, but here we are.

Background first. Bob The Builder began life as an animated television series, created by Keith Chapman in 1990 – Chapman went on to create the hugely successful Paw Patrol. Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey voiced the titular character for a whopping eighteen series between 1999 and 2011. It followed the jovial Bob and his anthropomorphic building manchines as they solved construction problems around the villiage.

Can We Fix It?, the show’s earworm of a theme song written by Paul K. Joyce, even made its way to the top of the charts, beating Westlife’s What Makes A Man to Christmas number one in 2000.

Exclusive: Sources are telling us that Amazon MGM Studios has won the bidding war for Mattel’s animated feature Bob the Builder which had Netflix, DreamWorks Animation and others vying for the project. Not all deals are complete, I understand.

Bob the Builder is being produced by Jennifer Lopez‘s Nuyorican Productions and ShadowMachine (who were behind Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and it stars Twisters actor Anthony Ramos in the title role. It was Ramos’ idea to deliver a Bob the Builder set in Puerto Rico, in a story that’s about the resilience of the Latino culture. He is a producer on the film. Bob’s motto in Spanish: “Si se puede” aka “Yes we can.” Felipe Vargas is adapting. Tbd on whether the movie is for Prime or the big screen.

Lopez isn’t currently in talks for a voiceover role in Bob the Builder, I understand.

Michelle Mendelovitz has stepped down from her role leading Mattel TV Studios, TheWrap has learned.

Mendelovitz, who joined the toy manufacturer in November 2023, served as head of Mattel TV Studios for just nine months before departing the role. A representative for Mattel did not provide further comment regarding her departure.

During her time leading Mattel’s TV Studios, Mendelovitz was responsible for overseeing the development, production and distribution of Mattel’s slate of TV content across broadcast and streaming globally. She reported to Mattel’s chief franchise officer, Josh Silverman.

Mattel TV Studios recently brought on board Sidney Clifton, Amy Suh and Cory Bennett Lewis as the creative head for animation, the creative head of live action and the head of production, respectively. The trio previously reported to Mendelovitz, whose role is expected to be filled.

Mattel’s next feature film based on a doll will be a live-action, theatrical Monster High movie written and produced by Akiva Goldsman and distributed by Universal Pictures. The gist of the Monster High fashion-doll line is that they are the children of iconic monsters, like Frankie Stein (the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride), Draculaura (the daughter of Dracula), and Clawdeen Wolf (the daughter of a werewolf mom and a human dad).

Goldsman’s banner Weed Road will produce the film. Goldsman, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of “A Beautiful Mind,” is also a producer on Mattel Films’ upcoming Major Matt Mason movie starring Tom Hanks. The announcement of that toy adaptation, which is set up at Paramount Pictures, preceded “Barbie.”

Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur De Koos will oversee the Monster High movie for Mattel; Greg Lessans has oversight for Weed Road.

Oscar-winning writer-producer Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road are partnering with Mattel, Inc. and Universal Pictures to develop a live-action theatrical Monsters High film, based on the multimedia franchise of the same name.

We’re told that Goldsman is only producing, not writing, so the assignment remains open for now.

Following the huge success of his Prime Video rom-coms The Idea of You and Red, White & Royal Blue, Nicholas Galitzine is staying in business with Amazon MGM, as he’s been tapped to star as He-Man in the live-action Masters of the Universe flick from the studio and Mattel Films.

While long-awaited, details as to the film’s plot are under wraps. Based on the iconic franchise from Mattel, it’ll be directed by Travis Knight, who is working from a script by Chris Butler. David Callaham, Aaron Nee and Adam Nee worked on an earlier draft.

Now, Bob the Builder is apparently set to endure the toy company Mattel's next on-screen existential crisis, as star Anthony Ramos says that the movie will follow a version of Bob who has "kind of lost his sense of what it is, to build," per Total Film.

"In the Heights" and "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" star Ramos spoke to Total Film for the magazine's latest print issue, in which he tried to explain the weirdly emotionally complex plot of the upcoming "Bob the Builder" film. The movie was previously described by The Guardian as being about Bob traveling to Puerto Rico, where he "takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build.

Jacob Scipio is headed back to the “Bad Boys” universe.

Scipio, who most recently starred opposite Pedro Pascal and Nicolas Cage in the meta adventure “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” will reprise his role as Armando Aretas – the estranged son of Will Smith’s Miami-Dade police detective character Mike Lowery.

Scipio appeared in 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life,” the action film led by Smith and Martin Lawrence. Further plot details are currently under wraps.

The fourth film also features Paola Núnez, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig and “Euphoria’s” Eric Dane. The original “Bad Boys” earned $141 million at the global box office, while the 2003 sequel “Bad Boys II” totaled $273 million. “Bad Boys for Life” outgrossed its predecessors with a combined $426.5 million. ITV has announced the planned closure of its children’s channel Citv.

The channel was launched in 2006 after the success of the Children’s ITV programming block, which launched on ITV in 1983 to provide dedicated late-afternoon programming for children aged between five and 13.

On Friday (10 March), the broadcaster announced that the Citv channel is set to close in the early autumn, after the launch of a new “dedicated destination for kids” on its streaming service Itvx.

The new service, Itvx Kids, is due to launch in July 2023. It will be rolled out during the UK school summer holiday period, with a range of titles aimed at both school-age and preschool children.

Itvx launched in December last year to replace the ITV Hub brand as the online home of all ITV content, as the broadcaster attempts to compete with streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon.

Under his Keith Chapman Productions banner, Chapman and Snipple will create character-driven animated IP for the upper pre-school market.

The veteran UK kids TV exec is already developing Paco & the Pirate League for the partnership, a 2D animation following the adventures of the world’s greatest football player, Paco, a 10-year-old cabin boy living on the Golden Boot pirate ship. Chapman described Paco & the Pirate League as “the show I wish I could have watched as a kid kicking my first football around.”

The exec has created some of the biggest animated hits of the past generation including CBeebies’ Bob the Builder and Nickelodeon’s international smash Paw Patrol, which has spawned 10 series and two features.

Chinese video streaming firm iQiyi has teamed with Canada’s Wildbrain to jointly produce kids’ animation series “Jonny Jetboy.” The series was hatched by Keith Chapman, creator of “Paw Patrol” and “Bob The Builder” and will run to an initial forty 11-minute episodes.

The story follows Jonny Jones, the youngest member of a family of heroes as he learns to become a superhero like his JetForce family. They are committed to protecting the high-tech city Calamity Canyon, from its many villains. Jonny wields a JetGlove and is the fastest member of the force, but often he struggles to control his special powers.

The deal marks first global partnership for original China IP struck by WildBrain’s dedicated Shanghai team. Now under way, production is taking place at China’s WingSing Animation Studio with WildBrain acting as supervisor. Delivery is scheduled for 2023.

The Canadian company is also handling global distribution and licensing outside of Greater China.

Vincent Marzello, an actor who has appeared in the James Bond films “Never Say Never Again” and “The Spy Who Loved Me,” as well as lent his voice to the animated series “Bob the Builder,” has died. He was 68.

Marzello was treated for cancer in 2009 and was then diagnosed with early onset dementia following his treatment. His wife, “Notting Hill” actress Lorelei King, shared the news on Twitter on Tuesday.

“The love of my life, my darling husband Vincent Marzello, died this morning. To those who knew him, I am sorry to post the news rather than contact you personally, but I am overwhelmed. My heart is broken,” King said.

After a few TV roles, Marzello’s first film part was an unnamed role in “The Spy Who Loved Me” in 1977, followed by another role in the original “Superman” film.

Marzello’s wife, “Notting Hill” actor Lorelei King, tweeted the news.

William Dufris, who voiced the title character in the U.S. and Canadian version of the children’s series Bob the Builder for its first nine seasons, has died of cancer. He was 62. Pocket Universe Productions, which Dufris co-founded, confirmed the news on social media Tuesday but did not give details.

Marc DeBevoise, CBS Interactive’s CEO and president, and Julie McNamara, executive vice president of original content for the CBS All Access streaming service, shared details about a variety of upcoming CBS All Access projects during their TCA executive session in Pasadena Sunday afternoon.

“Tooning” is an animated political comedy series executive produced by Stephen Colbert, and will feature brief daily segments and a full weekly episode that mocks the news and will include interviews with real guests. CBS All Access announced plans to debut three new editions of popular children’s animated series — “Lassie,” “George of the Jungle” and “Mr. Magoo.”

The three new shows, which come from DreamWorks Animation’s Classic Media, will all debut commercial-free on Jan. 17.

The announcement was made by Marc DeBevoise, chief digital officer of ViacomCBS and President and CEO of CBS Interactive, during CBS All Access’ presentation at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Pasadena on Sunday.

“We’ve seen a tremendous response from our subscribers in just the few months since CBS All Access began offering children’s programming,” DeBevoise said. “Bringing new editions of legendary classics like ‘Lassie,’ ‘George of the Jungle’ and ‘Mr. Magoo’ to the service is a fantastic benchmark for CBS All Access, and we look forward to continuing to expand our offering for families.

CBS has today begun to roll-out a raft of kids’ content on its digital streaming service CBS All Access.

This comes after the company revealed in August that it had licensed series including new seasons of Dhx Media’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, produced with Sony Pictures Animation, and Boat Rocker’s new Danger Mouse, produced with BBC Children’s Productions.

Other titles include the original Danger Mouse series from Boat Rocker Studios and titles from Dhx Media such as the classic Inspector Gadget, The Adventures of Paddington Bear, Madeline and Heathcliff.

Elsewhere, Bob the Builder, Sonic the Hedgehog, Adventures of Super Mario Bros., Archie’s Weird Mysteries, Polly Pocket, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? and Strawberry Shortcake Berry Bitty Adventures will also be available.

Separately, it will start rolling out select titles from its library of Nickelodeon programming from January.

Exclusive: Island Of Misfits has put in development Farmer Mars (working title), a new animated series from Paw Patrol and Bob the Builder creator Keith Chapman.

The series, aimed at pre-school aged children 3-6, is based on an original concept by Chapman. Set on the planet Mars, it follows a young Earth boy named Rob who gets a job on a farm owned and operated by the upbeat yet absent-minded owner, Farmer Mars. NBCUniversal is rearranging the toys it uses in its kids-programming playground.

The company’s Universal Kids will place a bigger bet on its ties to DreamWorks Animation, which NBCU bought in August of 2016 for approximately $3.8 billion. The network will stop developing original shows that are not based on DreamWorks properties, according to a person familiar with the matter, though it will continue to acquire series made by third-party producers.

The move takes place amid declining ratings and an executive restructure that has the network’s operations reporting directly to Frances Berwick, the executive who oversees NBCU’s lifestyle-based cable networks, including Bravo and Oxygen. Deirdre Brennan, the former general manager of Universal Kids, left in February. Universal Kids has been the primary vehicle NBCU hoped to ride to get into the multi-billion dollar market for kids entertainment, jockeying with rivals like Walt Disney, Viacom’s Nickelodeon and WarnerMedia’s Cartoon Network.

A new trailer for the revamped series has been unveiled ahead of its premiere on Channel 5.

The new-look Bob was unveiled towards the end of 2014, and fans of the show - as well as original star Neil Morrissey - voiced their disapproval on Twitter.

The handyman and his friends, who made their first appearance on CBeebies, have been given a makeover and 'digified', losing their stop-motion look.

Channel 5 has signed an agreement with producer Hit Entertainment for 104 new 11-minute episodes, with Harry Potter star Lee Ingleby replacing Morrissey as Bob.

Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt and The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison are also lending their talents to the show.

Bob the Builder will return to screens later this year. Can he still fix it? We'll have to wait and see.

The show will return next year after Channel 5 signed an agreement with producer Hit Entertainment. The series is co-produced by the Canadian animation firm Mainframe.

Hit is creating 104 11-minute episodes with Our Zoo and Harry Potter actor Lee Ingleby taking over voice duties from Neil Morrissey.

Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt and The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison are also lending their talents to the show.

The reboot of Bob the Builder, with a new look and voice, has got a mixed response from fans online, and the former voice of Bob, Neil Morrissey, appears to agree with the critics.

Mattel has replaced Morrissey with Harry Potter actor Lee Ingleby for the new series, which also transports the popular children's character from Fixham to Spring City.

Retweeting two critics of the changes, Morrissey appeared to back the annoyed fans who believe that they shouldn't mess with the original.

Morrissey was involved in the children's series for 18 series and 118 episodes.

A new ultra-modern redesign for classic children's TV show character Bob the Builder has been unveiled.

Mattel announced that the character's new look will be part of an overhaul as a new series premieres globally next year.

Changes to the character will include Bob the Builder moving from Fixham to Spring City, with Harry Potter actor Lee Ingleby signing on to provide his voice.

The new voice cast will also include Joanne Froggatt, who is best known for playing Anna in the global hit series Downton Abbey. Froggatt will voice Wendy.

Mattel announced in a statement: "The new series retains the emotional warmth that has always given Bob the Builder a firm place in the hearts of young viewers."

This will be the most dramatic overhaul for the character since he first appeared 1998.

Amazon's Lovefilm has secured the rights to a collection of iconic children's TV series including Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam and Pingu.

The streaming service has signed deals with Hit Entertainment, Ludorum and DreamWorks Classics and has also retained the rights to classic characters such as He-Man, Noddy and Postman Pat.

Popular kids favourites such as Pingu, Where's Wally, Bob the Builder and Kipper and over 50 episodes of Thomas & Friends are included in the deal.

Computer animated series Chuggington is also part of the service.

"The addition of this new children's content enhances our already fantastic range of iconic characters and classic shows," said Lovefilm's content strategy director Chris Bird.

Bagpuss and Mr Benn are among the classic children's TV characters that appear on a new stamp set.

Characters from 12 shows feature in the new series, including Postman Pat, Paddington Bear and Bob the Builder.

The stamps are part of the Royal Mail's celebration of 60 years of children's television, and have been released today (January 7).

Old favourites such as Dougal from the The Magic Roundabout and Andy Pandy also appear, along with current stars Peppa Pig and Shaun the Sheep.

The lineup is completed by Ivor the Engine, Great Uncle Bulgaria from The Wombles, and Windy Miller from Camberwick Green.

"For over 60 years, Britain's children's TV characters have brought cheer to generations of viewers," said Royal Mail Stamps' Andrew Hammond.

"It feels appropriate to celebrate all of these unforgettable characters on a set of very special stamps."

Ludo Studio.s Daley Pearson seems to have an ongoing fascination with peculiar events and the supernatural.

Pearson created The Strange Calls, the ABC TV comedy starring Toby Truslove as a Gold Coast cop who investigates weird things that happen after dark; a Us remake is being developed by 20th TV for the ABC network.

Now Daley and his Ludo Studio partner Charlie Aspinwall are developing The Strange Chores, a 2D animated series for ABC3 about two 12-year-old boys, both troublemakers, who earn pocket money by doing bizarre chores for their mysterious neighbour.
