Los Angeles – Raquel Welch never let anyone define who she was, despite being touted as a sex symbol in her early career. She defined sexy in films such as “One Million Years B.C.,” “Fantastic Voyage” and the 1970s Three Musketeers series. The movie star and entrepreneur died at age 82 at her home in Los Angeles.
She was born in Chicago as Jo Raquel Tejada (her father was Bolivian). Her films included “Fantastic Voyage,” “100 Rifles,” “Myra Breckinridge,” “Bedazzled,” “Tortilla Soup” and “Legally Blonde.” Her fans included painter Salvador Dali: He painted this abstract portrait of her in 1965.

We have some sad news to share today, as Hollywood has lost one of its most legendary icons: Raquel Welch has passed away at the age of 82. Deadline reports that Welch’s passing was confirmed by her reps at Media 4 Management, who simply said that she had died after a brief illness.
Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, but her family moved to San Diego, California when little Raquel was just two years old. She knew as a youngster that she wanted to get into the entertainment industry, and studied ballet for several years while entertaining – and winning – beauty contests. She attended San Diego State College on a theater arts scholarship, but despite doing some stage acting and landing a job as a weather presenter on the local news, it took a while for her to break through into films. With twelve features to his name, two of those winning him Best Director Academy Awards (Brokeback Mountain; Life of Pi), Ang Lee has become one of the most notable auteurs to achieve success within the studio system. While his 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility began a successful career in English language filmmaking, the Taiwanese director had already received two Oscar nods for Best Foreign Language film. Those include 1993’s The Wedding Banquet, premiering in Berlin, and 1994’s Eat Drink Man Woman, now available for the first time on Blu-ray, though it hasn’t enjoyed the same lasting reputation. After the film, Lee wouldn’t return to working in Mandarin until six years later (2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), so it represents a certain jumping off point for the director.

Matthew Fox (World War Z, Alex Cross, “Lost”) joins with Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln, No Country For Old Men, The Fugitive, Hope Springs), newcomer Eriko Hatsune and award-winning Japanese star Toshiyuki Nishida to bring to life the American occupation of Japan in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender. As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture – and psychological warfare – General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher (Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the...

"Let's show them some good old-fashioned American swagger." While I like to imagine this is what Tommy Lee Jones says to himself before he steps onto any movie set ever, it's actually a line he delivers as General Douglas MacArthur in the World War II historical drama Emperor. We got a first look at the feature helmed by Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring) in a short but strong clip last fall, as Emperor was set to make its screen at the Gala Presentation of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Now as this ambitious post-war movie gears up for its spring release, we've got a full trailer that's got plenty of salty American swagger, plus loads of intrigue. Check it out below, thanks to Yahoo: Penned by Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup) and David Klass (Walking Tall), Emperor centers on General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), an American soldier tasked...

The movies built around the New Testament Gospel have always tried to explore new sides of Jesus and his teachings. There have been quite a few that have garnered controversy such as “The Passion of the Christ” or “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Even though the story is more than two thousand years old, there are other figures that have not had as much attention.
It seems that Pontius Pilate will now have the spotlight with Brad Pitt rumored to be in the running to portray him. Unlike the typical Biblical epic, the story will center on Pilate’s journey to political power and infamy. From his childhood as the son of a Roman Knight to a soldier himself, he then becomes a political star and is given a governorship. Another major point is his mishandling of the religious struggles of Judea, which will culminate with the crucifixion of Jesus.

A few months ago Warner Bros. announced they would be making a Biblical epic called Pontius Pilate, and picked up a script from screenwriter Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup, Woman On Top and Emperor). It's being reported that Brad Pitt is looking to take on the lead role in the film and play the man who sent Jesus Christ to his death. I like Pitt as an actor, but it's hard for me to see him in a role like this. If he ends up taking the role, it will be interesting to see how he approaches it.
Deadline got a hold of the script, explained the story, and talked about the script saying "the evolution of Lucius Pontius Pilate from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier whose warrior exploits make him a general and puts him on a political track under the Roman Emperor Tiberius.

Brad Pitt is reportedly circling the title role in Pontius Pilate, a new interpretation of sorts on the man that ordered the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A biopic is in the works at Warner Bros who acquired the script from Tortilla Soup writer Vera Blasi.
The 49-year-old actor is not committed, but is reportedly close to signing on for the title role in a big budget Biblical epic.
Instead of a straight-ahead biblical story, the script describes the titular character as a ‘proud, capable Roman soldier’ whose ‘arrogance and inability to grasp the devoutness of the citizenry and its hatred for the Roman occupiers and their pagan gods leads him to make catastrophic decisions’ to allow Jesus to be crucified.

Brad Pitt is in talks to join Warner Bros' "Pontius Pilate," a new film about the life of the Roman general who authorized the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The script is written by Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup) and has been compared to "Braveheart" and "Gladiator." The new movie follows Lucius Pontius Pilate from growing up as the sensitive son of a Roman Knight to becoming a ruthless warrior who becomes a general under the Roman Emperor Tiberius. The Emperor eventually places Pilate in charge or Judea, during a time when Jerusalem was dealing with religious tensions. Pilate gets in over his head, and lets his arrogance and inability to control the citizens lead him to make catastrophic decisions. In need of public approval, he is asked to decide the fate of a 33-year-old rabbi accused by religious elders of claiming he is King of the Jews.

First announced last year , Warner Bros. has plans to bring to the screen the life story of Pontius Pilate, the 1st century Roman prefect who authorized the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Today, Deadline reports that Brad Pitt is eyeing the leading role. The screenplay, from Woman on Top and Tortilla Soup screenwriter Vera Blasi, is said to offer a human look at the religious figure and, according to Blasi, is primarily based in historical fact, detailing Pilate's life up until the fateful order. Blasi also supplied the screenplay for the upcoming historical drama Emperor , set to be directed by Peter Webber. Pitt most recently appeared in Killing Them Softly and can soon be seen on the big screen in Marc Forster's World War Z . (Photo Credit: Ivan Nikolov /...

Whenever we get a film about the last days of Jesus Christ, it’s usually told pretty straightforwardly, or simply from his point of view. One of the characters that is usually not explored in much detail is Pontius Pilate, the man responsible for ordering Jesus’ crucifixion, but apparently that is about to change.
Warner Bros. recently purchased the rights to a script entitled Pontius Pilate, which will “follow Pilate’s journey as a soldier who gains power under the Roman Emperor Tiberius, but screws up along the way and finds himself desperate for public approval when the time comes to make the choice as to the fate of Jesus of Nazareth.”

You know who got a bum rap in The Bible? Pontius Pilate. Guy was just doing his job when Joshua of Nazareth (Aka Jesus Christ) showed up on his doorstep. Granted, he did send the man to die a horrifyingly painful death, but he washed his hands and gave the crowd the chance to free the man who claimed to be the Son of God. At least he’s not Judas. He’s definitely vilified though, and a new project at Warners seeks to complicate the character a bit more. According to Deadline Hollywood, the studio has secured a script called Pontius Pilate from Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup, Woman On Top). It seems like studios are finding their religion lately. A flood of projects led by Darren Aronofsky’s Noah is coming down the pipe, as the Deadline article smartly points out. The real question is whether the religious community will rally around them or condemn them...

Warner Bros. has just picked up a script to a new biblical film called Pontius Pilate, from screenwriter Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup, Woman On Top and Emperor), based on the man who sent Jesus Christ to his death. This sounds like it will be an incredible film project, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
According to Deadline who has read the script, the story follows "the evolution of Lucius Pontius Pilate from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier whose warrior exploits make him a general and puts him on a political track under the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Promised a military governorship in Egypt, Pilate is instead assigned by Tiberius to become the prefect of Judea, at a time when Jerusalem was a cauldron of religious tensions between various factions of the Jewish faith. Warner Bros is on board for a new project about Pontius Pilate, which, if done correctly, should offer viewers a more in depth picture of the historical figure some consider to be among the most reviled in the New Testament. Penned by Tortilla Soup scribe Vera Blasi, the script tells the story of Pilate.s rise through the military ranks, his promising political career and ultimately his thankless appointment to the religious hotbed of Judea. Blasi told Deadline she estimates about eighty percent of the story arc was pulled from either The Bible or historical records, while the other twenty percent was made up to fill in the gaps. Raised Catholic, she spent years researching not only her main character.s life but also the other pertinent figures who played a central role in how Pilate ended up in Judea and why he chose to let Christ be nailed to...

Have you been dreaming about a movie that will follow the life and political intrigue of Pontius Pilate, the man who reluctantly sent Jesus Christ to the crucifix? Well, today is your lucky day! It seems the minds over at Warner Bros. think a movie about him is a better idea than making "The Dark Tower" or "The Imitation Game" which they let go in the past week. Oh, Hollywood! WB has gone ahead and picked up "Pontius Pilate" written by Vera Blasi, who also penned early aughts indies "Woman On Top" and "Tortilla Soup" as well as the upcoming "Emperor" with Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones. So what has the studio all hot and bothered? Well, according to Deadline, the story has a kind of "Braveheart" or "Gladiator" epic-sized scope and tell the story of Pontius' rise from battlefield warrior to cog in the political machine, who is...

Warner Bros. has plans to bring to the screen the life story of Pontius Pilate , the 1st century Roman prefect who authorized the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Deadline reports.

We got our first look at Tommy Lee Jones in Peter Webber’s upcoming historical drama, Emperor, back in May, which was swiftly followed by the first sales posters for the film, ahead of going on the market at Cannes.
With the announcement that the film will make its world premiere at Tiff, we’ve now got our first good look at Jones’ co-stars, Matthew Fox (Lost, Alex Cross) and Eriko Hatsune (Norwegian Wood).
“Nearly seven decades after the end of World War II, it is difficult to fully grasp just how devastating was the effect of Emperor Hirohito’s surrender to Allied forces in August 1945, along with his accompanying surrender of any claim of divinity. The events of that summer, galvanized by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, signalled much more than mere military defeat for Japan: it called into question the country’s most entrenched beliefs.

To continue with the fast paced array of news and incidents that sparked the Berlinale for us this year, we had our habitual meeting with Barcelona based Anna Soler-Pont, the woman behind Pontas Literary and Film Agency whose blog of her Berlinale experiences is also enlightening and inspires great interest in films based on novels.
We met Anna Soler-Pont years ago when we were thinking of creating a new database on Books-To-Film. Anna Soler-Pont understood the need and created her own business based on this idea. She is an agent for fiction writers selling international publishing rights Plus she packages, writes scripts and finds production financing for the films. She represents only 89 to 100 authors.
Her current project, now finding financing, is Traces of Sandalwood, based on the novel Rastes de sandal (Traces of Sandalwood) by Asha Miro and Anna Soler-Pont. It takes place in Mumbai, India and in Barcelona and spans the 1980s to today, interweaving the stories of Muna and Sita, two Indian orphan sisters with very different fates, although their paths cross and eventually come together in the end. It's mainly in English and Catalan. The co-writer with Anna is Coral Cruz, a script editor fluent in Catalan, Spanish and English. The director is Maria Ripoll (Tortilla Soup), born in Barcelona and educated at UCLA Film School. The stars Nandita Das is a famous Indian star. Christina Brondo (Her film, Penumbra, was acquired by IFC), the Spanish star knows India well and can easily pass for the Indian sister of Naina Daz. Ajay Jethi, the Indian male lead speaks Catalan.

Earlier this month, Matthew Fox (Lost) was cast in the upcoming political thriller Emperor. Set at the end of World War II, Fox will play Gen. Bonner Fellers, one of General Douglas MacArthur's leading Japanese experts during a time when MacArthur was temporarily in charge as the de facto ruler of Japan as supreme commander of the occupying forces. Fellers struggles with the decision whether Emperor Hirohito should be tried and hanged as a war criminal, while also searching for his lost love, a Japanese exchange student he had met years before in the U.S.
With Fox set for the lead role, it was only a matter of time before an actor was cast to play Gen. MacArthur, and, according to ComingSoon, director Peter Webber (Hannibal Rising, Girl With a Pearl Earring) has decided on Tommy Lee Jones for the role. Sometimes, when Hollywood remakes a world cinema hit, it really can improve on it. Not always, but here are the occasions when that's pretty much what happened...
Impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery? Then why do most Hollywood remakes of world cinema feel more like how men describe a swift kick in the family jewels? Something which had previously given you great pleasure gets twisted to such a degree that only pain remains.
It isn't always such a total disaster, though. Every now and then one of those Hollywood remakes defies all the odds and actually works. Here are a few examples of world cinema remakes that weren't a total disgrace.
The Magnificent Seven vs Seven Samurai
Yul Brynner in a black cowboy hat is badass no matter how you cut it. Those cold android eyes peering out from under the brim of that slate hat in Westworld cemented that as fact.

A true tomboy, Constance never considered motherhood her calling. “I just didn’t grow up with that same desire to be a mom that many girls and women have,” she explains to Conceive magazine. What’s more, according to her, for good reason!
“To be honest, I’ve always been a little afraid of kids. I secretly thought they didn’t like me.”

She might not get the chance to shine as Pope Joan, but it looks like Run Lola Run star Franka Potente is getting a different dramatic chance to shine. Variety reports that she is going to headline a new lost-at-sea film called Wave -- joining the likes of Dougray Scott and Marianne Faithful.
Based on Louise Longo's Let Me Survive, the film will focus on an English family -- mom (Potente) plus husband and 5-year-old daughter -- who set out for a three-week cruise on the Bay of Biscay. But a storm rushes in as they're just 40 miles from the Spanish coast, and the family decide that they'd be safer in the life raft, waiting to be rescued. Franka Potente, who kicked major ass in Run Lola Run and starred opposite Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity, has signed on to star in Wave, a lost-at-sea tragedy being directed by Maria Ripoll (Tortilla Soup). Based on true events, Wave recounts the story of an English family of three adrift at sea without water or food for two weeks. Only the mother (Potente) survives. But she’s then alleged to have killed her husband. Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible II, Hitman) is also in talks to join the film. Wave was written by Marie-Laure Bertehlin and Greg Latter, it’s based on the Louise Longo’s novel Let Me Survive. Jean Luc Van Damme (Goodbye Bafana) is producing for Banana Films in Belgium. The flick looks to be among the first films to use the new water tank at Spain’s Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante. Filming begins in February.

Obradors leads opposite Snipes in 'Nine Lives'
Jacqueline Obradors has nabbed the lead female role opposite Wesley Snipes in Nine Lives for Millennium Films. Shooting is scheduled to start April 13 in Bulgaria with David Carson at the helm. Obradors will be seen on screens nationwide Friday starring opposite Vin Diesel in New Line Cinema's A Man Apart.
