This is one of the shorts made by Jean Gremillon after he gave up directing feature films. This one and its follow-up "Haute- Lisse" are about craft industry art. Both are in color ,which was very new to Jean Gremillon whose fiction filmography featured black and white works only. But as "La Maison Aux Images" and "Haute-Lisse " are about art works ,it would have been unthinkable no to use the color. The former deals with intaglio engraving,hand-cutting,metal engraving,dry-point engraving,etching,embossing,line-engraving ,you name it ...all in a workshop in Montmartre ,that's where the artists are !The latter deals with the tapestries of the Manufacture Des Gobelins which Louis the Fourteenth and Colbert made famous:in every history book in France, you have this tapestry which shows the king visiting the place.
Grémillon would die in 1959;he was only 58.
