This movie had been in development for fifteen years, with Universal Pictures intending to distribute and Liam Neeson set to star. In the end, the project was dropped after Universal became nervous about the religious themes.

When Sharon is tending to Fr. Gutierrez's wounds, she mentions that crucifixes are used to ward off vampires. Antonio Banderas, who played Fr. Gutierrez played the Vampire Armand in Interview with the Vampire. Ironically, the vampires in Anne Rice's vampire chronicles are not affected by crucifixes.
