CBS has set a date to take viewers Beyond the Gates.
The network will premiere its new daytime drama — the first such show to focus on a Black family in more than 35 years — on Feb. 24. Beyond the Gates began production in Atlanta earlier this month.
The soap opera, which CBS picked up to series in April, is set in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States. The show centers on the Duprees, “a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty,” the show’s description reads. “But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered.”

In light of the news that All My Children is potentially being rebooted as a holiday movie on Lifetime, SoapHub reached out to a few of your favorite Passions alums to see their thoughts about the potential to bring their show back.
History
Passions debuted on NBC on July 5, 1999, and was the brainchild of James E. Reilly, who had previously written for Days of our Lives. Known for its unique mix of supernatural elements and traditional soap opera drama, Passions centered around the residents of Harmony, a fictional New England town. Storylines featured family rivalries, forbidden romances, and other soap staples, but it was the supernatural twists that set Passions apart. Characters like the witch Tabitha Lennox and her doll-turned-son Timmy added an eccentric flair, captivating audiences with spells, curses, and strange occurrences.
Despite its unique approach, Passions struggled with ratings, but its devoted fanbase kept it going for almost a decade.

Anticipation is high for the first new soap opera to debut since Passions premiered on NBC in 1999. Originally titled The Gates, the show’s name changed to Beyond the Gates. It is the first soap to feature an all-Black cast since Generations debuted in 1989. As fans clamor for more information about the show, which is set to debut in 2025, its creator Michele Val Jean shared a cryptic nugget indicating exciting things to come.
A Picture That Spoke a Thousand Words
On X, formerly Twitter, Val Jean posted two side-by-side pics with the caption, “Just gonna leave this here #beyondthegates.” The images are most likely from the control room for when shooting commences and are chock full of monitors, a video switcher, an intercom panel, and many more pieces of equipment. The monitors display color bars with the text of the show’s title, Beyond the Gates, emblazoned in the center.

The Chicago Med cast re-introduced Nurse Jackie during the show’s latest episode. It was also a hint that she would be around for a while.
We first met Nurse Jackie Nelson at the end of Chicago Med Season 9. Jackie popped up during the 12th episode to help Maggie Lockwood in the Ed.
It was an emotional story arc for Jackie, with Maggie worrying that Jackie was overworking herself. But there were other reasons to be concerned because Jackie was harming herself.
The writing presented a situation where viewers worried Jackie might have been hurt by someone else, but Maggie later found Jackie in the bathroom in distress. That’s when Maggie discovered the real story.
Dr. Daniel Charles was forced to put Jackie on a 72-hour psych hold when the nurse would address the problem. That may have been the help Jackie needed.

The primetime broadcast season makes a comeback this fall with new and returning series — some of which feature soap alums. For example, CBS is rolling out shows where everyone from leads to supporting characters to guest stars once caused a splash in the daytime realm on shows like Days of Our Lives, Passions, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, All My Children, and As the World Turns.
6 Daytime Alums on CBS Primetime #1 Shemar Moore, S.W.A.T.
Soap Character: Malcolm Winters
Soap Opera: The Young and the Restless
Only former Shemar Moore could lead a show that gets canceled and then uncanceled. Ultimately, CBS couldn’t eliminate an intense cop drama that consistently brought viewers to its Friday night lineup. So Moore will be back playing Hondo, the leader of the 20-squad, for a 22-episode eighth season.

CBS’ new daytime drama series “Beyond The Gates” has cast soap alums Karla Mosley and Daphnee Duplaix as “Dani Dupree” and “Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson,” respectively, daughters of the Dupree family matriarch, “Anita,” played by “As The World Turns” alum Tamara Tunie (ex-Jessica Griffin).
A former model turned “momager” who gave up her career for love, Dani (Mosley) is the Dupree family’s wild child, who’s also free-spirited, headstrong and uninhibited. Dropping out of school to pursue a high-flying modeling career, she has always marched to the beat of her own drum. Meanwhile, Nicole (Duplaix) exudes warmth, empathy and compassion. Although her seemingly perfect life includes being married to a surgeon husband, not everything is as it appears on the outside… inside.

Since CBS announced the creation of a new daytime drama featuring the Duprees, a wealthy Black family living their best life in a luxury gated community, fans have been waiting for the casting news. That time is now, and here’s what we know about Beyond The Gates.
Title and Time
Until now, the project that CBS Studios is producing in conjunction with the NAACP has been known as The Gates. However, with this casting windfall comes news that the title has changed. From here on out, the first soap created in 25 years will be known as Beyond The Gates.
What’s even better news is that Beyond The Gates (Btg) will be the first Black one-hour daytime drama to air on television. In fact, Generations, NBC’s groundbreaking African-American soap that aired in the early ’90s, was a 30-minute show.

Earlier this week, “The Gates” creator Michele Val Jean created a stir on social media when she posted a minor update on the upcoming CBS daytime drama series she executive produces and serves as showrunner.
“Today was a big day for #TheGates,” commented Val Jean in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Wish I could share more but I needed to at least mark it. If you know, you know.”
Although Val Jean didn’t elaborate further on her post, and her message could be referring to something completely unrelated, Soap Opera Network has learned that in recent weeks the series has formally assembled its writers’ room which is likely to include some familiar names to the genre.
In addition to a writers’ room, Soap Hub announced last month that veteran writer Robert Guza Jr. and veteran producer Julie Hanan Carruthers have signed on as executive producers, working alongside executive producers Sheila Duckworth,...

The year 2024 has been nerve-wracking for television fans. No shows are safe, and many reigning champs are seeing the end of their careers.
Did any of us really expect to see long-running success shows like Station 19 or Blue Bloods end?
But they are ending as networks try to tighten their production budgets. That means saying goodbye to some of our favorites to make room for the new and improved.
It can be tricky to get attached to a freshman season of any show. You can get attached to the characters, only to find out it was for naught when the season doesn't succeed.
Thankfully, that's not the case with Justin Hartley's new series, Tracker.

Actor Justin Hartley has become a huge primetime star with his iconic role in This Is Us as Kevin Pearson, not to mention his huge breakout hit this year, playing Colter Shaw on Tracker. Still, he recently had an interview where he talked about his “ridiculous” start on soap operas.
Justin Hartley’s – Early Daytime Drama Days
Before diving into the world of primetime, Hartley started in the land of daytime drama. From 2002-2006, he was in the soap opera (now canceled) called Passions where he played Nicholas Foxworth “Fox” Crane.
Not overly shocking, but the show took advantage of Justin’s chiseled features and ripped physique, showcasing him in plentiful scenes where Hartley walked around without a shirt on.
Justin reflected on his time with the soap, noting that the show had him shirtless around a hospital for three weeks. He adds that it was “ridiculous”, but he loved it.

Days Of Our Lives Stars To Compete On Popular Game Show
Long-time NBC soap Days Of Our Lives was moved to Peacock streaming in September 2022. The move came after the success of two seasons of the spinoff Beyond Salem aired exclusively on the streaming service. Many thought the move would be the end of the soap and the soap genre in general.
However, CBS recently announced they were creating a new soap opera, giving fans hope that the daytime drama genre isn’t quite dead yet. Additionally, Peacock renewed Days Of Our Lives for two more seasons. 2025 will mark the show’s 60th anniversary.

When William Stanford Davis auditioned for Friends, he thought he absolutely nailed his performance.
“I thought I killed it. Oh my God. I was waiting for casting to call and say, ‘We want to book him,’” he tells Rolling Stone. “I was at a friend’s office and they had my agent on speakerphone and asked about the job. And I’m getting ready to do a touchdown dance when the phone got silent. Like really, dead cold silent. And they said, ‘They think maybe Stan should go back to being a telemarketer.

More than a week since CBS shocked the entertainment industry with news that it is currently developing the first daytime drama series since the launch of “Passions” nearly 25 years ago, and the network’s first new soap opera since the launch of “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 1987, George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+, recently revealed how “The Gates” came to be and gave some insight on whether the show will be a 30-minute show or one-hour.
In a far-reaching interview with Vulture, Cheeks revealed that “The Gates” is real and that the show is being developed following conversations with Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS/NAACP Production Venture, which was established in 2020 to develop content for the CBS Television Network, as well as the ability to sell programming to third-party platforms across the media landscape with an emphasis...

In her first official statement since the news was announced, Val Jean took to X (formerly Twitter) and said, “I’m so profoundly touched by the overwhelmingly positive response to #TheGates. CBS is developing a soap opera about a wealthy family that could become the first daytime TV drama with a predominately Black cast in decades.
The project is titled The Gates, and it follows the lives of a wealthy Black family living in a posh, gated community.
The show will be produced by a CBS Studios/NAACP production venture in partnership with P&g Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. The Gates will be written by Emmy-winning daytime veteran Michele Val Jean (The Bold & the Beautiful), who will also serve as showrunner. Val Jean has also written more than 2,000 episodes of daytime TV.
The last Black daytime soap was NBC’s short-lived Generations, which launched in 1989 as a half-hour drama and was reportedly the first U.S. soap to center around a Black family from its inception. Also, Fox’s 2015 hit drama Empire was regarded by some as a soap opera,...

Airing just four episodes since premiering after the Super Bowl last month, CBS has given an early second season renewal to “Tracker,” which has emerged to become this season’s most-watched new series and the most-watched new series overall since the series debut of “Young Sheldon.”
When factoring in Nielsen’s Most Current Data (including Live+7), on average, 16 million viewers are tuning in for each episode, making “Tracker” the most-watched new drama since the 2014-2015 season debut of Fox’s “Empire” (17.33 million) and the most-watched new show since “Young Sheldon” (16.49 million) during the 2017-2018 broadcast television season. On streaming, the series was the no. 1 show on Paramount+ in February.
“‘Tracker’ kicked off our premiere week with a ratings bang and has kept the momentum going,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “We knew we had something special when we saw the very first cut of the series and the overwhelming audience response confirms it.
