Despite Gamera being a turtle, none of the Heisei trilogy films make overt references to turtles. Director Kaneko would later confirm turtles do not exist in the Heisei Gamera universe.
Made it onto Kinema Junpo's best Japanese films of the year list. With this, all three of Kaneko's Gamera films made it on to the best of the year list for their respective years.
To scale the size of rain with the monsters, special effects director Higuchi used sand to simulate it.
According to director Kaneko he had to be cautious with the final act set in Kyoto. There are nationalist groups in Japan that take offense at disrespecting Kyoto. It was the historic capital of Japan and disrespecting it is seen as disrespecting the whole of Japan. This is also why Kaiju films rarely take place in the city of Kyoto.
The film had a rather long production time for a Japanese film, well over a year. For comparison the Godzilla films of the time were generally only given a few months. Director Kaneko credits the films quality to this, stating that if there is a choice between time or money, having more time is beneficial to the filmmaker.
