What does an abundantly talented woman have to do to get an Oscar around here? Annette Bening is 0-5 when it comes to winning an Academy Award in the acting categories. If it were up to her fans, there would a law in place that would put an end to this insanity. By 1969, the Beach Boys were in a rough place commercially. The brilliant Pet Sounds, years away from gaining the cult following it would eventually accrue, was a commercial dud. Radio had moved on to heavier rock and soul. The Summer of Love and Monterey Pop came and went without the participation of the band who gave the world “Good Vibrations.” Woodstock was happening as these thirtysomethings were figuring out the next move.
Their dilemma was embodied in the single they put out that year: the A side, a Brian Wilson song called “Break Away,...

The good thing about “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road,” a documentary that premiered on Tuesday at the Tribeca Film Festival, is that it effectively makes the case for the startling musical genius of Brian Wilson, using celebrity testimony and musical examples to paint a clear portrait of the troubled songwriter, producer and singer as a protean pop creator.
And the frustrating thing about “Long Promised Road” is that it makes that case and then keeps making it for an hour and a half, to the point where the film is apt to become wearying to all but the most diehard fans of Wilson and the Beach Boys.
Directed by Brent Wilson (no relation to Brian) and written by Brent Wilson and Jason Fine, the film is ostensibly built around a road trip in which Rolling Stone writer Fine drives Wilson around Southern California in a car that is apparently equipped with multiple cameras.

Without Brian Wilson, the world would be devoid of West Coast anthems like “California Girls,” “Good Vibrations” and “Surfin’ U.S.A.”
The musician and record producer, who founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, is the subject of a new documentary, “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road.”
Directed by Brent Wilson, who has no relation to the singer, the film is premiering at this year’s Tribeca Festival on June 15. “Long Promised Road” features guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and Nick Jonas and gives the Beach Boys icon an opportunity to reflect on his life and music.
In an exclusive clip of “Long Promised Road,” Wilson discusses his songwriting process with Rolling Stone’s editor Jason Fine, his longtime friend, on their way into the recording studio.

Exclusive: The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off in earnest this week and one of the indisputable highlights of this New York-centric fest as far as I am concerned is a documentary having its sold-out world premiere June 15 and chronicling a certain Southern California musical legend. Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road from director Brent Wilson (no relation) is not the first feature film to center on The Beach Boys icon responsible for a host of immortal hits from “Good Vibrations” to “In My Room” to “God Only Knows” and countless others, but taking a new look at Wilson, who has had more than his share of ups and downs including well-documented battles with mental illness over the course of a 60-year career at the top, this film somehow gets right to the core of what makes him tick without much verbal input from the man himself.

When Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998, his sons Jonah and Justyn became heirs to their father’s estate. That meant joining with surviving Beach Boys founders Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Al Jardine to vote on key business decisions, from archival releases to commercials. The top 11 couples will hit the floor on Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars,” but the most anticipated routine of the night — or at least the most pimped — is arguably Derek Hough‘s.
The new judge and his girlfriend Hayley Erbert, a former troupe member, will perform a paso doble to “Uccen” by Taalbi Brothers. “I certainly don’t wanna disappoint. I’m gonna bring my all,” Hough teased of the performance three weeks ago. “My M.O. is entertaining and bringing joy to people, and that’s it. I’m so happy I’m able to do that on this show.”
The six-time champ left “Dancing” after finishing in sixth place with Marilu Henner on Season 23 in 2016.
Meanwhile, the top 11 will each tackle an unlearned dance. No new dances this week, but after their season debuts last week, jazz and contemporary are sticking around.

After seven long weeks our favorite contestant on season 3 of “The Masked Singer” is back. The White Tiger took to the stage again on the two-hour episode of the show on April 1. He, along with Kangaroo and Turtle, made the top 3 in Group A on February 12. Since then, they’ve been waiting in the wings. They finally get to face-off against the top trios from both Group B and Group C.
Each of these Super 9 is fighting for a slot in the quarterfinals. They will have to face down the four judges and then win enough votes from the studio audience to stay in the competition.
The White Tiger makes up for his shaky vocals by putting on a great show. He first rocked the house with his cover of “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. Then he made the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch hit “Good Vibrations” his own.

The third season of “The Masked Singer” introduced a new twist of separating its 18 contestants into three groups of six. Initially the groups performed for the audience and judges, with three being eliminated from each. Group A booted the likes of Lil Wayne (Robot), Drew Carey (Llama) and Chaka Khan (Miss Monster).
