Immediately before the war begins, British, French and American troops were said to be pouring into Lower Saxony. The defense of Lower Saxony was entirely the responsibility of West German, British and Dutch forces until the reunification of Germany. French forces were concentrated in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, and American forces in Bavaria and Hesse.
In some battle scenes, a small metallic extension can be seen attached to the barrels of Soviet soldiers' rifles. This device narrows the muzzle of the gun, allowing the mechanism to fully cycle with the lower gas pressure provided by blank cartridges. In other words, the soldiers are firing blanks, and the footage is from a Warsaw Pact training maneuver.
