The fantastic Wong Tao takes a hissy fit and slaps some water after his wife cuts off his hair, in a bid to save her mothers life after she is bribed by villain, Lung Fei. Yes, this is the kung-fu version of Samson and Delilah!
Apart from the Biblical-borrowing, Assault Of The Final Rival is a typical 70's kung-fu flick full of revenge, fights, and over-the-top bad guys that do what they do out of sheer jealously. The film is thickened out with more-than-usual melodrama with his guilty wife giving birth to their son, then leaving making for a slower middle section. The English dub of this version is bloody dreadful, offering some laughs and plenty of cringe-worthy moments.
The fights are fun when they come about - not amazing, but not dreadful either, with the final fight being the best. While there are definitely better Wong Tao movies out there, Assault Of Final Rival is still worthy of a watch at least once for fans of his work...
Overall: A slow burner with nothing overly spectacular on offer!
