After seeing the trailer and the title for “Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker,” we began to suspect that director J.J. Abrams might undo some of the plot points and themes established in “The Last Jedi.” One of those lingering questions was the revelation about Rey’s parents and where she comes from.
While Kylo Ren says in “Episode VIII” that Rey’s parents were “nobodies” and that she could sense she doesn’t come from some long lineage of Jedi blood, Abrams teased in a recent interview that might not be all there is.
“I will say that we knew going into this that this movie had to be a satisfying conclusion, and we’re well aware that that is one of the things that’s sort of been out there,” Abrams told ABC News. “I don’t want to say that what happens in ‘Episode VIII’–you know,...

From writer/director Shinichiro Watanabe ("Cowboy Bebop") Sneak Peek the animated 'neo-noir', cyberpunk anime short film "Blade Runner: Black Out 2022", that prequel's producer Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner: 2049":
"...set three years after the events of 'Blade Runner', the 'Tyrell Corporation' has developed the new 'Nexus-8' line of 'replicants', who now possess natural, open-ended lifespans equivalent to that of a regular human.
"This causes a massive backlash among the human populace, who begin hunting down and killing replicants, seeing them as a, now very credible, threat to humanity. One of these replicants, 'Trixie', is attacked by a group of thugs but is rescued by 'Iggy', who effortlessly disarms and kills the thugs.
"Iggy reveals to her that he used to be a soldier on a planet called 'Calantha', but deserted when he realized the enemy soldiers he had been fighting and killing were also replicants.

When it's time for our interview, Trixie Mattel swishes into Popsugar's La office like a fierce Spring breeze. It's a warm day, but she's in full drag; I've caught her at the perfect moment. It's early April, a few short weeks after her fantastic RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars 3 victory and mere days before she kicks off the tour for her second mini album, One Stone.
We proceed to the green room, where she changes immediately. It's a busy press day, so she's prepped multiple wigs and outfits to keep things fresh. She looks over her shoulder and says, "I sat through a 40-minute car ride while wearing a corset. Can you imagine?" She pops off her shoes, cracks open the Lacroix I've offered her, finishes up her outfit overhaul, and sits on the couch.

Above: Us one sheet for Trouble in Mind (1985). Art direction by Mike Kaplan, illustration by Ignacio Gomez.Alan Rudolph may not be one of the best known names in American independent film and that is a shame because his 22-feature filmography comprises a unique body of work of literate, off-kilter, romantic, humanistic cinema. New Yorkers have a chance to devour that work over the next few weeks at the Quad Cinema in their essential retrospective, "Alan Rudolph’s Everyday Lovers."Rudolph’s poster-ography is as erratic and full of gems as his filmic career. It starts out with a couple of genre horror films—with gaudy posters to match—before launching into the early masterpieces Welcome to L.A. and Remember My Name, both film which were released by Mike Kaplan’s Lagoon. Kaplan, who had previously worked with Stanley Kubrick, is a keen connoisseur and collector of posters himself,...

When Dermot Mulroney last visited the Sundance Film Festival 13 years ago, he was co-starring in an Alan Rudolph film titled Trixie, opposite Emily Watson and Nick Nolte. “I think it was a little less commercial then,” says Mulroney, who returns to Park City, Utah, next week with a trio of films. One other thing that’s also changed since 2000: the “Park City at Midnight” showcase, which specializes in some truly bizarre, outside-the-box filmmaking. (Think last year’s Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie.) When night falls at Sundance, the cool-crazies come out, and Mulroney arrives this year with a potential doozy.

My love of Emily Watson isn't so secret to those that know me. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who dug her in Trixie, and of course our precious website is named after her film, Punch-Drunk Love. She's one of cinema's great treasures, in my opinion, but I don't get to see her in action nearly often enough. So when she does do something it gets my full attention. Her latest flick,...

From the age of five she was determined to be a Hollywood star
It has become something of a rite of passage for any young actress fresh on the Hollywood scene to be pencilled in to play Janis Joplin. Brittany Murphy, who has died unexpectedly aged 32, was one of several performers over the years who were attached to one Joplin biopic or another.
In this case, it was Piece of My Heart, for which Murphy auditioned successfully in 1999, but which was never made. It certainly was not much of a stretch to imagine her evoking the gusto and vulnerability required for that part.
Murphy was no run-of-the-mill star. In her first substantial role, as a greenhorn mentored by the coolest girl in school in the 1995 hit Clueless, she proved herself an inventive exponent of comedy. She demonstrated her versatility in dramatically intense films such as Girl, Interrupted and 8 Mile. She...

Emily Watson's Gum Chewing Secret
Movie star Emily Watson had a hard time changing her English accent for a Chicago one in her upcoming film Trixie (2000) - until she discovered chewing gum. The actress who plays a bumbling detective in the new film, found that gum was the magic ingredient to help her along. She explains, "We sat for a couple of days working on the dialect and I'm thinking, 'Oh God I'm not gonna get this' and then I started chewing gum during the lessons and that really helped. It's a great release that suddenly makes you feel kind of blah." And the star of Angela's Ashes (1999) also had to abandon her pompous attitudes about being British. She explains, "There's something about being English and seeing yourself as an intelligent cultured person that makes it quite difficult to really go for that sound. It wasn't until I realized that I had to let go of the ideas of the person who I thought I was to crack the accent."...
