Veteran film producer Evzen Kolar, whose credits include the 1997 Harvey Keitel drama “City of Industry,” has died in Los Angeles at age 67, his family announced Monday. The Czech-born filmmaker also produced the 1993 Leslie Nielsen-Rob Schneider comedy “Surf Ninjas” through his Kpi Entertainment production company and director Zalman King’s “Delta of Venus.” In addition, he produced John Avildsen’s 1999 Jean-Claude Van Damme action movie “Inferno” (a.k.a. “Desert Heat”), Bruce Beresford’s 2001 period drama “Bride of the Wind,” and John Irvin’s 2003 comedy “The Boys and Girls from County Clare” starring Colm Meaney, Bernard Hill and Andrea Corr.

Chicago – His films were more popular than his name, but director John G. Avildsen did put his mark on the last 30 years of 20th Century movies. Avildsen died last week at the age of 81. He is known best for the Oscar Best Picture-winning “Rocky” (1976), but also did the controversial “Joe” (1970), “Save the Tiger” (1973, Best Actor Oscar for Jack Lemmon), John Belushi’s last film “Neighbors” (1981), “The Karate Kid” (1984), “Lean on Me” (1989) and “8 Seconds” (1994). Patrick McDonald, Spike Walters and Jon Espino of HollywoodChicago.com offer three essays on their Avildsen favorites.

John G. Avildsen was born in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, and graduated from New York University. He started as an assistant director for Arthur Penn and Otto Preminger, before breaking out on his own in the low budget “Joe,” featuring Peter Boyle, in 1970. He scored his biggest success with “Rocky” in 1976 – winning the Oscar for Best Director – and revisited the franchise later with “Rocky V” (1990). He also directed both sequels to “Karate Kid” with “Part II” (1986) and “Part III” (1989). At his peak, he was the original director for “Serpico” (1973) and “Saturday Night Fever” (1977), but was let go from both films. His final film as director was “Inferno” (1999), featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Avildsen passed away in Los Angeles on June 16th, 2017, of complications due to pancreatic cancer. He was 81 years old.
Patrick McDonald, Spike Walters and Jon Lennon Espino of HollywoodChicago.com pay tribute to the director who was nicknamed “King of the Underdogs,” with the following film essays.

“Rocky” is a miracle of a film, considering both its eventual prize (Oscar Best Picture) and the way it made it to the screen the first place. A broke actor named Sylvester Stallones writes a desired boxing movie script that has one caveat… he must portray the title character. As a gambit, he proposes a budget of only one million dollars, and the film gets the green light. For all of the notion of Stallone as Rocky’s prime creator, it is actually director John Avildsen who delivered the on-screen goods – the famous running scene, the freeze frame on the top of Philadelphia’s “Rocky Steps,” boxing sequences that had never been seen before and the third use of the (just invented) Steadicam by a major motion picture.
Avildsen loved to tell the stories of having Stallone write additional dialogue because the budget was so tight they couldn’t afford to match Rocky’s boxing shorts with the on-set posters or send back his too-big ring entrance robe. And remember the classic song “Gonna Fly Now”? It was Avildsen who brought in composer Bill Conti from his previous directorial effort of the Burt Reynolds film, “W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings.” The underdog of underdog films was delivered to a Bicentennial audience, and the little-movie-that-could took home Oscars for Best Picture, Director and Editing, in addition to being the highest grossing film of 1976. No wonder Avildsen became the “Ka-Ching of the Underdogs.”
Gonna Fly Now: The portrayal of the character of Rocky by Stallone was never better in this film, with Six sequels now in the culture. Director Ryan Coogler of the latest Rocky adventure, the excellent “Creed,” seemed to use the John Avildsen template in approaching the sequencing of that story.
The Karate Kid (1984) by Spike Walters

John G Avildson was a bit of a journeyman… his Oscar notwithstanding. He wasn’t one of those visionaries who develop a signature style, but his subtle gift was making a formula work. And they don’t come much more formulaic than 1984’s underdog/odd couple buddy movie “The Karate Kid.” Yet Avildson knew how to inject heart into this story of the undersized “Kid” and his quiet but powerful teacher. As the listless remake and some of its later sequels show, this is not nearly as easy as Avildson makes it look here – this is the 1980’s classic that scored Pat Morita an Oscar nomination and holds up relatively well today. It’s not exactly groundbreaking but director Avildson knew how to make the most of it.
Gonna Fly Now: You’d expect the man who directed the original “Rocky” to find the right beats in the inevitable training montage, but Kid Daniel’s “crane kick” training – which predictably but winningly leads to a triumph at the end – still delivers the goods.
Lean On Me (1989) by Jon Lennon Espino

High school sometimes get a bad rap as a physical hell on Earth. John G. Avildsen’s “Lean On Me” does nothing to make anyone think otherwise. Avildsen, like many of his films, has fun with this one. He shows us an exaggerated look at a public school system after minorities have taken over the neighborhood. The director has long had a fascination with creating hero stories, and in this one, he gives us a breakout performance by Morgan Freeman… his performance and approach to the character is everything! This movie lives on the over-the-top action of Freeman, breathing a fun air into the entire film as he does things that may be extremely illegal in real life, but are completely entertaining within the scope of the film. Avildsen knows exactly how to set a scene, which you know right away after the opening montage that is essentially a music video. His films often have an after school special feel, but “Lean On Me” shows just how well it works even when school is still in session.
Gonna Fly Now: The opening credits where we are taken on a tour of the school while Guns-n-Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” is playing. He hilariously frames and choreographs the fighting to simulate feral animals in the jungle.

Following John G. Avildsen’s death yesterday, one of the director’s best-known collaborators has paid tribute to the departed filmmaker. Sylvester Stallone honored the “Rocky” director the way everyone does these days, with an Instagram post: “The great director John G. Carrie Underwood is one hot mama! After teasing us with her super sexy "Smoke Break" cover art last week, the singer has just released the music video for her latest track -- and it's worth the wait. Sporting a tan plaid shirt and white tank with denim shorts and thigh-high brown fringe boots, the blonde bombshell looks hotter than ever as she braves the Mohave Desert heat in the clip. "For the storyline, I really just wanted it to be mainly about strong women -- strong beautiful women who are doing everything that the boys do," Underwood tells Et about the inspiration behind the song. "And at the end, we all get together and have our break. Hardworking during the front-end of the video and having our break, our 'Smoke Break,' at the end of the video." "Smoke Break" is the first single off Carrie's upcoming album, "Storyteller," out Oct.

I struggled to start this review because Beyond The Reach divided me in a tonally confusing, strangely endearing kind of way. Director Jean-Baptiste Léonetti calls upon the blistering Mojave Desert heat in his adaptation of Robb White’s novel Deathwatch, but he also calls upon a goofy-as-hell Michael Douglas. Part of the film wants to be this badass “most dangerous game” reimagining, turning Douglas’ character into a comic-booky Bond villain, while another more reserved aspect thrives on exploiting an extremely human struggle between two obviously mismatched classes. It’s about the rich vs. the poor, not just man vs. man, but most importantly, it’s about a raging lunatic who looks like a Cabela’s poster child gone apeshit.
Michael Douglas plays Madec, a millionaire/billionaire businessman who loves hunting big game. Jeremy Irvine plays Ben, a local tracker who is pining over a girlfriend who just left for a more fruitful college life.

The last but one answer in this interview has a slight spoiler for Muppets Most Wanted.

For an actor who’s made a career out of playing bad asses whose actions speak louder than words, it was a strange thing to hear him so openly chuckling – when our call was connected I asked how he was doing and he replied “Great, we were just talking about Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles – probably before your time, but it’s really funny!” and what followed was one of the most entertaining interviews I’ve ever done.

High-octane car-crashing sequel Death Race 3: Inferno's out on DVD and Blu-ray. Here's Duncan to share a few of its craziest moments...
Chances are that if you’re reading this, then you’re already a convert to the ways of the Death Race franchise, so what you’ll probably want to know is how the new film, Death Race: Inferno, holds up compared to part two. Thankfully, Inferno is just as much B-movie fun, sticking to the traditional sequel convention of being bigger, louder and considerably more insane.
While Death Race 2 made every effort to build up the new character of Carl ‘Luke’ Lucas (played by Luke Goss), while introducing his own story arc, Inferno centres almost entirely on action and makes absolutely no apologies for it. So what better way to review the film than to highlight the more gloriously bonkers moments that perpetuate the it.

Say what you want, but this writer is a huge fan of Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race franchise. With a surprisingly strong sequel/prequel released earlier this year and with production on Death Race: Inferno recently under way in South Africa, we checked in with Anderson (who helmed the first remake and has stayed on board the franchise ever since) during our recent Resident Evil: Retribution set visit to get his thoughts on this third installment and what the current status on the sequel is.
Anderson said of his involvement with the growing franchise, "I write the storylines still for each of the movies, and then Tony (Giglio) puts it together. Jeremy (Bolt) and I come on to produce each of the movies, but we're not sitting on set necessarily worrying about all the nuts and bolts. We're definitely very involved with the Death Race movies heavily on the creative side,...

Roel Reine (Death Race 2) is back behind the camera of Death Race 3: Inferno, Universal Home Entertainment second sequel to the Jason Statham starrer Death Race that's currently lensing in South Africa. Bloody Disgusting's been told that they've designed 10 new cars for the racing scenes. "They all looked very cool, more unique than 'Death Race 1 & 2', driving in some dunes close to Cape Town," said a source. Below you'll find shots of three of said cars, the first being Frankenstein'. The sequel takes place after the events of Death Race 2. The new film will fix on off-road racing in the Mexican desert. Danny Trejo and Tanit Phoenix reprise their roles for the new film.

But now, just one day after her Playboy cover leaked on the Web, rocketing Lohan to the top of Internet searches, I’m realizing this could hardly be the end for Lindsay Lohan. This, in fact,...

The first behind-the-scenes image from Universal's third Death Race film, Death Race: Inferno , has hit the web, courtesy of writer Tony Giglio. And, as you can see, it appears the race is heading off the usual track. Principal photography is taking place in South Africa with director Roel Reiné returning (he was at the wheel of the last installment). Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames and Dougray Scott star. Look for it on DVD and Blu-ray sometime next year.

As The Expendables appears on DVD and Blu-ray, Duncan got to meet with the legendary Dolph Lundgren to discuss his back catalogue of classic action movies...
For those of us growing up in the 80s, Dolph Lundgren needs no introduction. However, since the interview took place, I've talked to several people, mostly in their late teens/early twenties, who haven't heard of him and I've become increasingly aware of the generation gap. It was a subject which came up in the interview itself, so in the interest of inclusion, following the interview portion, there's a very quick rundown of the films that encouraged such loyal geek fandom starting some twenty-five years ago.
At the interview, the man himself was incredibly polite, friendly and laughed at every available opportunity, also apologising at the beginning and end of our time for not being able to stand up to shake hands. (He was wired in to microphones.

While you may not know from seeing the trailers which instead focus on female co-stars Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan also has a role in the upcoming Robert Rodriguez-directed flick "Machete." But while they're keeping her role closed off from any of the advertising, according to reports, Lohan's clothes come off for the movie.
While Lohan has posed nude for magazine spreads before, it's the first time she's gone nude on screen. According to reports from attendees of screenings for "Machete," Lohan's barely in the film at all. And when she is, she's baring it all.
In the film, Lohan plays April, which up until now has only been described as a gun-wielding nun. But she gets into much more X-rated, even incestuous territory, including a ménage à trois with her character's mother and star Danny Trejo in a pool. Her character's father even confesses lustful thoughts...

HollywoodNews.com: Fanboys get ready.
Turns out Lindsay Lohan, who plays a nun in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming shoot-em up “Machete,” appears only briefly in the film.
And when she’s not wearing her habit, she’s – naked. Talk about warming up for her role as X-rated thespian Linda Lovelace in “Inferno.”
A tipster revealed her early preview of “Machete” to Jezebel.com:
I saw Machete. It’s really well-executed exploitation… but Lindsay is barely in it. She’s nude almost the whole time (except for the “nun with a gun” scene), and she has a videotaped ménage à trois with her mother (not Dina) and Danny Trejo in a pool. Her father pulls her out of a drug den type situation and confesses (to priest Cheech Marin) to lustful thoughts about his daughter. “i just wish she’d look at me as more of a man.” I don’t...

We'd have picked Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story as the most likely return of Lindsay Lohan to critically-acclaimed stardom, but celebrities are saying the gritty Robert Rodriguez film Machete is how the troubled star will make her comeback.
At a Los Angeles screening of the film, her co-star Jessica Alba said she was "very proud" of how Lindsay pulled it together after being released from rehab last week.
Fellow Machete castmembers Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez (the latter of whom also got into a few scrapes with the law as a young actress) also voiced their support of Lohan, who plays a drug-addicted aspiring model in the gritty film.

Los Angeles -- Given the fact that Lindsay Lohan was released from rehab just one day before a special screening of her new film "Machete," the odds of her attending the event were slim. Nevertheless, her co-stars lamented her absence and had wonderful well-wishes for the troubled actress.
Everyone from Don Johnson to the film's leading man, Danny Trejo, to Cheech Marin and Michelle Rodriguez all had glowing praise for Lohan, who plays the rebellious daughter of a powerful senator's aide. Jessica Alba, who plays a saucy immigration officer, was excited for people to see Lohan onscreen again.
"She's so good in this movie," Alba said emphatically. "I can't wait for people to see [her in] it."
"Machete" director Robert Rodriguez agreed. "She's awesome in the movie,...
