After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.

Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

But Prime Video will welcome a few new series this month, including the highly publicized...

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

While Scream set off a new slasher cycle in the late 1990s, MGM delivered something different with Disturbing Behavior. A fitting choice considering the film’s themes. Ultimately, though, this ‘98 teen chiller landed a bit more in the science-fiction bin than straight, undiluted horror; one by one, a town’s troubled youths endure sinister, personality-warping makeovers to make them better fit into society. That sort of genre pitch, when coupled with up-and-coming young actors like Katie Holmes and James Marsden, should have been enough to draw in the target demo. Yet the studio and the director, David Nutter, didn’t see eye to eye on things, resulting in one of the most troubled horror productions of that decade.

The 1990s were full of top-notch science fiction films that won over critics and set the box office on fire -- after all, we're talking about a decade that produced "Independence Day" (which beat "Mars Attacks!" to theaters), "The Matrix" (albeit with some complex behind-the-scenes activity), "The Fifth Element" (ripping off Plato to great effect) and the list goes on and on. There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.

In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.

Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

As long as there have been teenagers, there have been troubled teenagers. Adolescence is brutal, a time when people have to learn how to be adults and leave behind their childhoods, all while dealing with raging hormones and a changing body. There are plenty of films about killer teens, capitalizing on adult fears of that turbulent time in their own lives, but what about movies where the troubled teens are the victims and the heroes? Long before the absolutely brilliant "Spontaneous" gave audiences the perfect allegory for surviving school shootings, a messy but star-studded 1998 film dug into just how terrifying it can be to be a teenager. "Disturbing Behavior" is by no means a good movie — studio-demanded cuts made the plot almost nonsensical, and there are some deeply problematic elements — but it did create a "Stepford Wives"-inspired metaphor for surviving high school that's surprisingly apt even today.

The plot focuses on two black maids who work in white homes in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s. Stone plays a writer who wants to help the women chronicle the hardships they face, so their injustices are exposed nationwide. “The Help” chronicles real-life conditions in the Deep South, while celebrating female friendship and empowerment.

There are so many different streaming services in play that it’s impossible to keep track of them all, but we find it’s good to at least be aware of what’s *leaving* the ones you’re subscribing to. This way you can make sure to knock things off your list before they’re gone.

It's difficult to overstate the immediate and overwhelming effect that Wes Craven's 1996 film "Scream" had on pop culture. By the mid-1990s the slasher genre had pretty much come to an end. The most popular monsters of the 1980s were being deliberately killed off, as "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" and "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" seemingly closed the door on their respective franchises. The slasher series that continued started to die of fatigue, as seen in clunky, underwhelming films like "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers" and "Hellraiser: Bloodline." 

Then, in December of '96, "Scream" came out and a new trend was immediately born. The Kevin Williamson-scripted "Scream" was a slasher movie, yes, but it was populated by teenage characters who all knew -- and spoke openly about -- the tropes of slasher movies. Everyone was wry, sarcastic, and understood the metafictional situation they occupied.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. Happy Friday, dear readers! While time might feel like a bit of a flat circle right now, the weekend is officially upon us once again, and I don’t know about you, but these days, movies are providing a very much-needed distraction. With that in mind, I thought I’d put together a list of horror and sci-fi movies that were released throughout the 1990s that you can currently stream for free on a variety of platforms like Vudu, Tubi TV, Crackle, Pluto TV, and IMDb TV.

I just figured we often spend a lot of time celebrating genre movies from the 1980s, so it was time to give the ’90s their due, and there are a lot of great movies from that era that you can currently watch for free via streaming.

Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.

Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.

Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

Hulu is out with its list of new and expiring content for the month of September, and what better way to beat the back-to-school blues than with a whole bunch of binge-watching.

Among the new goodies coming next month is the 12th episode and season finale of horror anthology series “Into the Dark.” Out Sept. 6, the finale is called “Pure,” and is described as a female coming-of-age horror story in which a group of teenage girls perform a secret ritual at a “Purity Retreat.” When one of them begins to see a “supernatural entity,” a scary question is posed: “What is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations?” Scary indeed!

Exclusive: The story of Adam Paskowitz, who is from a family of explorers, is set to make it to TV after Entertainment One struck a development and production deal with content firm Crush+Lab.

The Designated Survivor studio is to make shows, including a docu-series, across all platforms with Paskowitz and his family, who have been dubbed the ‘first family of surfing’.

Paskowitz is the son of legendary surfer Doc Paskowitz and the shows will be based on his family’s atypical life. Rather the antithesis of the typical nuclear family, they shun material luxuries, and only have the minimal possessions that they need to survive as they live out their lives on the open sea. They also shine a light on the environmental urgency created by mankind’s ever-growing waste and the way this is affecting the land and sea.

The show will provide “unfettered” access to the Paskowitzes’ personal lives.

Written by Clay McLeod Chapman and illustrated by artist Jey Levang, the complete comic book miniseries was recently unleashed as a graphic novel by Boom! Studios and Simon & Schuster, and to celebrate its release, we caught up with Chapman (who is also the creator and performer of The Pumpkin Pie Show) in our latest Q&A to discuss the necessity of telling this story in the comic book medium, collaborating creatively with Levang and Boom! Studios, and how the setting of Lazaretto was partly influenced by’90s slashers and real-life college experiences.

Can you tell us where the idea for Lazaretto came from? There definitely seems to be more of a scare of global epidemics these days with ebola making its way to North America and more anti-biotic resistant strains of the flu.

The actress and filmmaker will star in Stx Entertainment and Lakeshore Entertainment’s just-announced sequel, “The Boy 2,” which follows their 2016 horror hit “The Boy.”

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.

In episode 14 of Corpse Club, titled "High School Horror Films," co-hosts Patrick Bromley, Heather Wixson, Scott Drebit, and Derek Anderson skip back-to-school shopping and instead prepare for another year of detention by looking back at some of their favorite high school horror films, including Carrie (1976), Scream, The Faculty, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Disturbing Behavior, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge...

Although the Super Bowl directly affects only part of one day of the weekend, that’s enough to create an overall lousy box office. The problem isn’t the sportsball competition itself, but that event always serves as a signifier to distributors: This isn’t the time to release the good stuff.

At an estimated $76 million, this year’s Super Bowl weekend was about the same as last year, and worse than almost every 2016 weekend (exceptions: pre-Halloween and early December). Three sequels debut next weekend, with varying shots at much higher numbers — “The Lego Batman Movie” (Warner Bros., already receiving positive reviews), “Fifty Shades Darker...

On the last quiet weekend before elevated titles enter the fray, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” (Universal) gets a shot of repeating #1 for the third week, with the only significant contender being “Rings” (Paramount), yet another horror franchise entry.

In addition to “Split,” “Rings” will battle “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land,” and the second weekend of “A Dog’s Purpose” (Universal) for positions among the top six. There’s also “The Space Between Us” (Stx), the second science-fiction romance after “Passengers” in under two months. None of these films are likely to bring in even $15 million, and not all are guaranteed to top $10 million.

Given some distance and the perspective of time, almost every horror film seems to look better and find its audience. Though the early to mid 1990s have long been considered a particularly bad period for American horror movies, recent years have seen a number of titles being reassessed and opinions on them revised to be much more favorable than they were 20 years ago. Titles like Disturbing Behavior and I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Rage: Carrie 2, largely written off by horror fans during their theatrical releases in the ’90s, are now being talked about as secretly good genre efforts not because the movies have actually improved, but because enough time has passed that the films can be removed from their historical context and taken for what they are.

Of course, some ’90s titles were always secretly good; they only needed some time to find their audience.

(Cbr) FX will expand its lineup with an adaptation of "Redshirts", the comedic sci-fi novel by author John Scalzi. The book, which tackles tropes from the original Star Trek series, follows the adventures of "Intrepid" ensign Andrew Dahl, who quickly realizes he and his ilk are basically cannon fodder. The novel gets meta from there, as Dahl and company discover they’re actually characters on a TV show. The novel won a Hugo Award in 2013. Deadline reports the series will be produced by Jon Shestack ("Waiting…", "Disturbing Behavior"), Ken Kwapis ("The Office", "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") and Alexandra Beattie ("Outsourced")....

Having escaped the great northern snow storm, Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri showed up in Miami, Florida on Thursday evening (January 2) for some retail therapy.
