After working as a writer for nearly two decades across projects like Please Like Me, Ready For This, Dance Academy, Molly and The Secret Life of Us, Liz Doran had been curious about producing.

Yet she regards her first producing credit, Sbs short-form drama The Tailings, as almost accidental.

Set in Tasmania, the 6 x 10 minute series, which premiered on Sbs On Demand this weekend, follows a troubled teen, Jas (Tegan Stimson), who launches an investigation into her dad’s death. Her accusations put her into conflict with her new teacher Ruby (Mabel Li), who is trying to make an impression during her first posting.

The script is penned by first-time writer Caitlin Richardson, from Tasmania, to whom Doran was script editor and mentor from the project’s early stages.

During that early development, Doran and then Sbs head of scripted drama Sue Masters struck up a conversation about who should produce the project.

Ted Lasso will have some help in finding out what makes the men of AFC Richmond tick, with the Season 2 casting of a team shrink.

As reported by our sister site Deadline, Sarah Niles — whose previous TV credits include I May Destroy You, Catastrophe and the BBC’s Beautiful People — has joined the acclaimed Apple TV+ comedy in the series regular role of Sharon, a sports psychologist who is brought in to work with Roy Kent & Co.

Academy Award and Emmy winner Nicole Kidman, Emmy/Grammy/Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Golden Globe nominee Alison Brie and Emmy winner Merritt Wever are ready to Roar, as the cast of a female-driven anthology series ordered by Apple TV+.

Kidman will also serve as an executive producer on the series, which was created by Glow‘s Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. Based on a book of short stories by Cecelia Ahern, Roar will present a collection of eight, half-hour, genre-bending episodes, told from a uniquely female point of view.

On October 20, 1930, the soap opera was born, with the debut of the first episode of Irna Phillips’ Painted Dreams. Although the series had a relatively brief network run, compared to Ms. Phillips’ other triumphs, it is widely recognized by broadcast historians as the first very soap opera.

One day in 1930, schoolteacher Irna Phillips visited Chicago’s Wgn looking for work. Although initially hired as an actress, her interests soon turned to writing, and she created the series Sue and Irene in which she and Ireene Wicker (best known as radio’s “Singing Lady”) provided all of the voices, with Irna playing “Sue” and Ireene playing “Irene.” Scheduled during the daytime, Sue and Irene was sponsored by Lever Brothers’ detergent “Super Suds.” The dialogue was conversational in tone, rather than full-out acting,...

The Middle celebrated its 200th episode Tuesday by commemorating a much smaller milestone achieved by the town that Frankie & Co. call home.

Early on in “The 200th,” Nancy and Ron Donahue dropped by the Hecks to inform them that Orson had just been named one of the top 200 cities in Indiana, coming in at… No. 200. To mark the occasion, the town’s upcoming cow rededication ceremony — thrown by none other than Frankie’s former boss Mr. Ehlert — would double as a celebration of Orson’s having made the list.

Jacques Doillon’s most recent film—known in English, if it is known at all, as either The Three-Way Wedding or In the Four Winds—has never, to my knowledge, been shown in the States since its release in France in the spring of 2010. According to Jordan Montzer in Variety, Doillon’s “oeuvre reaches new heights of faux-kinky gobbledygook in [this] low-budget chamber piece.... With a pitch that could have provoked untold laughter in the hands of a Larry David, pic somberly reveals the ego-tripping, backstabbing and, well, butt-slapping that occurs when two thesps spend a day at the country home of a misanthropic playwright. What ensues is far from enjoyable, and adequate perfs won’t carry Doillon’s pretentious banter further than French ears.”
