The series was a tremendous hit in post-socialist Hungary, and still remains one of the most beloved and most commonly reran comedy series on television. It was one of the very few continuous TV shows to air during Hungarian prime-time programming in 1991, and the local dub was given A-list treatment, with respected actors voicing the characters. Each episode took several days to dub, as the dubbing cast would hold meetings to discuss and joke about their roles until they got their performances right. Viewers who grew up in poverty under Soviet oppression were fascinated by the aristocratic lifestyle presented in the show, which quickly became the focus of escapism and wishful longing. On the series' 30th anniversary, some of the still living actors were invited to Hungary to partake in a fan celebration and luxury dining - at that time, the show had over 23,000 avid Hungarian fans. The character Cissy Meldrum has also become a gay icon in Hungary, a country that still has strict rules against LGBT+ representation in media.
It is revealed during the show's run that Cissy is the elder of the two Meldrum daughters. Although Catherine Rabett (who plays Cissy) is just under one year younger than Susie Brann (who plays her younger sister, Poppy).
