[This story contains spoilers from the Silo season two premiere.]
Graham Yost doesn’t want you to read the Silo book series — not yet, at least.
“I usually try and say [that] sitting right next to [author] Hugh Howey,” the Silo showrunner jokes from his office in Carmel, California. “Buy copies of the book, but don’t read them yet.”
Season two of Apple TV’s Silo premiered on Friday, with episodes rolling out weekly until the Jan. 17, 2025 finale. Yost has made no secret of his departure from the source material, pulling whole episodes out of single sentences in Wool, Howey’s first of three books in the Silo series. Howey is an executive producer on the show, and by all accounts, is thoroughly pleased with Yost’s work.
Season one covered the first half of Wool; season two will finish it. The remaining two books are Shift and Dust. “We thought of different structures for season two,...

Why does Morgan Freeman, our beloved cinematic sage, sport those iconic gold hoop earrings? While some might think it’s merely a quirky fashion choice, there’s a fascinating, slightly morbid reason behind them that leaves us both admiring & chuckling in the same breath.

As the man who’s delivered breathtaking performances in Glory, Se7en, Unforgiven, and The Dark Knight trilogy, Freeman has clearly ascended to the pinnacle of A-list stardom. But back to the gold hoops—these aren’t just bling for the bling’s sake. Freeman revealed in a 2019 Instagram post that these gleaming accessories are worth just enough for someone “to buy me a coffin if I die in a strange place”.
Just like the brave sailors and roguish pirates of yesteryear, Freeman’s got his bases covered, ensuring he can rest in peace wherever his life adventures might lead him.

Actress Minnie Driver was the ‘it girl’ of ‘90s Hollywood, as she was touted to be the next big star after her Oscan-nominated performance in Good Will Hunting. While she was expected to hit the levels of stardom of other starlets like Kate Winslet and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Driver has chosen to work on more independent and small-scale productions.
Driver’s last blockbuster film, Hard Rain, was reportedly not a good experience. Apart from being a box office bomb, the filming conditions were reportedly extreme and miserable due to it being set around a natural disaster. To top it off, Driver reportedly fought with the producer over miserable working conditions.

After living in Los Angeles for 27 years, Minnie Driver is now back living in London. But asked if she could ever live in the U.S. again if Donald Trump is re-elected president, the “Good Will Hunting” star said, “If I lived in a red state, no, I couldn’t.”
“But living in California, you are somewhat insulated,” the actor continued, in an interview with British publication The Times. “But do you want to go and live in a bubble? Do you run away from the fire or do you go back and help?”
Driver, speaking just days after Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial, said, “Of course he deserves to be in prison — of course he does. But just looking at how much money he raised in that two days, $53 million in a 48-hour period, and the idea that because the...

As the high-energy roar of the iconic 90s thriller, Speed has geared up to celebrate its 30th anniversary (yesterday), we can’t help but reflect with a sense of awe on its legacy. Can it truly be that three decades have zipped by since Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock hooked us with their on-screen chemistry in this breathtaking chase that remains one of the most gripping tales of survival against the clock?
Speed (1994) | 20th Century Fox
Released on June 10, 1994, the film by 20th Century Fox not only soared to the pinnacle of cinematic mastery but also sparked a debate that continues to this day: did it outperform Bruce Willis’ Die Hard, despite their obvious similarities? With adroit direction by Jan de Bont (directorial debut) and riveting performances by Reeves as the earnest hero & Bullock as the plucky civilian thrust into danger, Speed did more than just entertain; it redefined the action genre for its time.

Morgan Freeman’s presence in movies usually attracts audience, but even his charisma and soothing voice could not save his 1998 action thriller film, Hard Rain. Directed by cinematographer-turned-director Mikael Salomon, the movie emerged as the biggest flop of that year.

On a more interesting note, fans who have seen the film were so angry they demanded to change the ending. They did not want the legendary icon’s character to die so the studio decided to do a reshoot.

Minnie Driver claims producers for 1998’s Hard Rain told her she couldn’t wear a wetsuit because “they wanted to see my nipples.”
The Good Will Hunting actress said on Mondays’ episode of the I Weigh With Jameela Jamil podcast that she was made to feel like “an idiot” when she pushed back on a costume decision for the disaster action thriller, despite filming in “20 million gallons of water.”
“It’s set during this massive storm,” she explained. “There were huge rain machines. We shot crazy hours. It was tough…. Everybody else could wear a wetsuit underneath their costume, and I was told by the producers that I couldn’t because they wanted to see my nipples, and that there was no point in having the wet T-shirt if you couldn’t have what was underneath it.”

Actors and actresses often come across projects whose filming ends up making them quite uncomfortable and Minnie Driver is no exception. Back in 1998, the actress starred in Mikael Salomon’s heist action-thriller, Hard Rain. While the film didn’t perform well at the box office, bringing in less than $20 million, this was far from what soured Minnie Driver’s memories of the film.
A still from Hard Rain (1998)
According to Minnie Driver, she was made to go through some serious uncomfortable working situations. Apparently, she was not allowed to wear a wet suit underneath her clothes, unlike other actors, despite the fact that they were filming with rain machines. And when Minnie Driver decided to push back, she felt as if she was being punished for speaking up.

Many people often blasphemously (and hilariously) joke around that Morgan Freeman is God. Not only because of his pitch perfect casting as God but also due to his smooth, defining and, yes, god-like is Morgan Freeman’s voice that one can’t picture penguins or parts of nature or, yes, God, without hearing the man. One reason could be that we’ve only ever really known Morgan Freeman as an older actor, not striking a chord with mainstream audiences until he was in his 50s.
Soon enough his skills, screen presences and voice had Hollywood calling every time they needed a kind wise grandfather types or a grizzled vet from either side of the the law or any type of narration in any type of film. That persona has marked him as a welcome figure throughout modern cinema – despite the nearly constant cash grabs that pad out the unfortunate bulk of his filmography.

On May 12, 1976, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue played a gig at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin, Texas, that left little historical mark. Newspaper clippings from the week reveal that furious fans protested with signs outside the hall (“Boycott Rolling Thunder Ripoff”) when they learned plans for separate early and late shows were scuttled at the last minute, creating a general admission melee where seat assignments were suddenly meaningless. But it’s one of the few shows from the 57-date Rolling Thunder Revue that never surfaced in the collector community...

Sure, the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be the biggest franchise in the history of cinema, but it took an army of filmmakers and independent superheros to become what it is. If there is one, single unquestioned king of the box office, it is undoubtedly James Cameron. The man, as it stands, has made three of the four highest-grossing movies of all time, with "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Titanic." The latter was released way back in 1997 and it still managed to cross the 2 billion mark in global ticket sales, something no other film did until (checks notes) "Avatar" in 2009. In its initial run, the film earned 1.84 billion, before subsequent re-releases took it all the way up to 2.19 billion.
No other film in history had a run quite like that of "Titanic," which topped the charts at the domestic box office for an absolutely staggering 15 weekends in a row.

“The truth is that that story is timeless. You don’t want it to be timeless, but it is,” declares co-creator Alex Kurtzman about why it seemed like the right time to revisit this story on Showtime’s limited series “The Man Who Fell to Earth.”
“It felt like a particularly necessary time to tell the story,” he says, adding for our recent webchat, “that being said, when we set out to do it Jenny and I were not we were not necessarily thinking that way,” he proclaims. “We’re not that smart man, nor that altruistic,” co-creator Jenny Lumet interjects with a laugh. “I think we both came at it from very weird personal and instinctual places and we said yes before we really knew what we are unleashing upon ourselves,” she reveals. “The Man Who Fell To Earth” has never made for light entertainment. Walter Tevis’ 1963 novel set a dire trajectory, and David Bowie’s 1976 film, among many changes, sticks with the sentiment. An alien arrives in America, hoping to save his species from a distant planet, and… things do not go as planned. The arc, after all, is right there in the title (no matter how you read it).

Miller introduces “Sublime,” one of the section’s buzz titles, along with “Diogenes,” from Peru’s Leonardo Barbuy, and two titles from Brazil: Gregorio Graziosi’s “Tinnitus” and Gabriel Martin’s “Mars One,” winner of Ventana Sur’s prestigious Paradiso Wip Award.
Titles brim with talent, observes Eva Morsch-Kihn, curator of Primer Corte and Copia Final along with Mercedes Abarca and Maria Nuñez.

There’s a moment at the very end of Victoria Wharfe McIntyre’s The Flood when we see some of her characters wearing sunglasses. It’s powerful because it snaps us back to the here and now and makes us realise that the events it depicts happened within living memory. Much of the rest of what we see could be happening at any time in the last couple of centuries. There’s a temptation to distance it in one’s mind. In part this is a way of escaping the horror of it. In part, it’s a way of evading responsibility, or of pretending to ourselves that we have undergone some unlikely fundamental change.
The events we see are set in one of those quiet rural backwaters where time always seems to move more slowly than it does elsewhere. Its a place whose routine is about to be brutally interrupted,...

"All these bloody lies... I'm taking back what's mine." 4Digital Media has released an official US trailer for an Australian action western titled The Flood, from filmmaker Victoria Wharfe McIntyre. This premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last year, and it already opened in Australia (we also featured the Australian trailer last year), and arrives in the US this fall. "A tale of retribution, revenge, redemption and reconciliation." Set during WWII, when a woman's husband, daughter, land and innocence are ripped from her, she embarks on a brutal journey of retribution and revenge. Starring Alexis Lane as Jarah Banganha, with Shaka Cook, Dean Kyrwood, Dalara Williams, Karen Garnsey, Peter McAllum, Simone Landers, and Aaron Jeffery. There's a lot going on in this trailer, a ton of different characters, and action all over the place. All the US marketing is focused on Jarah, but she's not in this trailer as much as expected.

Victoria Wharfe McIntyre’s revenge thriller The Flood will get releases in the US, UK, and Latin America after a number of deals at the European Film Market.
Berlin-based Media Move licensed the rights, with 4Digital Media picking up North America and the UK, where it plans a digital and DVD release later this year, and Brazil’s Encripta to distribute in Latin America, where it plans a theatrical release in June.
McIntyre said while distinctly Australian, the film carried the universal themes of revenge, redemption and reconciliation through truth telling.
“We are thrilled to see our uniquely Australian voice popular on the international stage, sharing a narrative built around #metoo, Black Lives Matter, and colonisation,” she said.

"Destroy me? They made me." Madman Films has released an official Australian trailer for The Flood, an intense revenge western thriller from Australia directly confronting their racism towards aboriginals. "A tale of retribution, revenge, redemption and reconciliation." This film recently premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival a few months back, and it arrives in Australia in January coming up soon. Set during World War II, when a woman's husband, daughter, land and innocence are ripped from her, she embarks on a brutal journey of retribution and revenge. Starring Alexis Lane as Jarah Banganha, along with Shaka Cook, Dean Kyrwood, Dalara Williams, Karen Garnsey, Peter McAllum, Simone Landers, and Aaron Jeffery. Whoa this looks damn good! Seems to be a more gritty genre action film take on Australia's racism than the emotional dramas they've been making recently. That bar scene at the end of this! Hell yes. Here's the...

Emmy voters continue to prove that overdue narratives don’t factor into their decisions when picking winners. Just ask actors like Martin Sheen (“The West Wing”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and last year’s Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), who were never able to win Emmys for their respective iconic performances. Not everyone can be as lucky as Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”), one of the rare cases of an overdue actor actually being given the Emmy for the final season of their show.
This year, while voters did finally reward overdue favorites like Maya Rudolph and Kerry Washington for the first time, there were numerous actors at the 2020 Emmys who weren’t quite as lucky. Below is a list of the nine Emmy nominees who have now racked up at least five losses from the TV academy.

The debut feature by Armenian filmmaker Marat Sargsyan is world-premiering in competition in Venice's 35th International Film Critics’ Week. A blue screen informs that war has begun. What will be needed? Collect the men, find guns, or maybe someone will give them. We need a location, a country where the war would take place. No problem, the Colonel is a real pro, he has caused wars to order, or on orders, on multiple occasions in different countries. Now his followers have grown up and caused a war in his country. He doesn’t want to, but he has to fight. He is old and tired of war. He wants to be at the table with a steaming pot of tasty mutton ribs and stare at an innocent TV screen with the news on, and the dressed-up news reporter announces that the war has begun. This is the plot of The Flood.
Angela Bassett earned two Emmy nominations this year for projects that couldn’t be more different: Best Comedy Guest Actress for HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Best Narrator for Disney+‘s documentary series “The Imagineering Story.” In one, she leads a bad bitches support group in an episode appropriately titled “Angela Bassett is the Baddest Bitch.” In the other, she recounts the story of how Disney creative artists and technicians created attractions for theme parks here and abroad. Watch our exclusive interview with Bassett about her dual nominations above.
Her “Black Lady Sketch Show” appearance went pretty quickly, as she recalls: “We filmed actually about four to five hours — morning until about noon or 1:00 — so it was a really quick turnaround. I got to work with some amazing young artists that I was just becoming familiar with,” as well as fellow guest-starring bad bitch Laverne Cox.

A little less than a decade ago, the streaming service industry was small and simple to navigate. Even though Netflix was still up and coming, the company remained both a novelty and an anomaly to the film studios and their theatrical distribution network. Fast forward to now, however, and the family of streamers includes Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max and a wealth of others.

Any parent hoping to watch a David Lynch movie with the whole family is in luck starting in April. Disney+ has announced Lynch’s 1999 Disney movie “The Straight Story” will be available to stream next month, which is exciting news as the movie has been hard to come by in recent years on streaming. “The Straight Story” is available to purchase on YouTube and Amazon, but Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream the biographical drama as part of their membership staring April 3.
“The Straight Story” is an outlier in Lynch’s challenging and experimental filmography, with the majority of his movies only be suitable for adult viewers. Co-written by John Roach and Mary Sweeney, “The Straight Story” tells the true story of Alvin Straight, who made headlines in 1994 for journeying across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawn mower. The cast includes Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, and regular Lynch collaborator Harry Dean Stanton.

“Life isn’t measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away”. Bollywood’s music has been around 89 years going into 2020 and it’s been taking our breath away for however long we’ve been listening to it. Everyone has a favourite singer, music director and genre which defines for them the perfect song. This of course makes a list of the best songs of the decade a difficult task as they are so subjective to each person. There’s so many perfect songs in Bollywood! Thus, below is a list of some of the great songs of the decade!

‘Pee Loon’ – Once Upon a Time in Mumbai
Music: Pritam – Singer: Mohit Chauhan
Overalapping sounds, lightly classical and a love story blossoming… so simple a formula but this song shows why it continues to work. Mohit is sublime backed by Pritam’s instrumentation.

Hollywood has always enjoyed making movies set around natural disasters. There’s just something about watching mother nature destroy big cities and iconic landmarks that audiences enjoy.
Well, Vanity Fair gathered together environmental scientists Morgan Page, Michael Angove and Peter Gleick to sit down and watch some of the natural disaster scenes from movies so that they could fact check them and offer some insight.
The movies they discuss in the video include San Andreas, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Volcano, Twister, Geostorm, The Core, Interstellar, Sharknado, The Perfect Storm, Pompeii, Noah, The Impossible, The Happening, Into the Storm and even Hard Rain.
It’s interesting listening to what these scientists have to say about the natural disasters in these movies. Some of the movies get it right while others are way off the mark.
