When Zeba had to leave the country due to VISA issues the script was changed to a comedy and Sunny Deol also opted out. Shah Rukh Khan was signed for Govinda's role. Due to date hassles he also opted out. That's when David Dhawan asked his favorite Govinda to do the role.

Deewana Mastana review :
When David Dhawan's Aankhen (1993) had turned an all time blockbuster, veteran director Manmohan Desai had famously remarked that it was "his style" of filmmaking. Desai's son Ketan then collaborated with Dhawan to make a hilarious comedy titled Deewana Mastana with Govinda and Anil Kapoor in the lead.
The plot revolved around two undeserving suitors vying for love of a pretty psychiatrist played by Juhi Chawla. One is called Raja (Anil), a small time chor while the other is a man child called Bunnu (Govinda) who happens to be her patient as well.
Of the cast, Govinda was simply brilliant as the dimwit Bunnu who walks baby steps at home but proves to be a tough nut for the local goon Pappu Pager (Satish Kaushik in an unforgettable special appearance). Anil Kapoor was efficient as ever as Raja and was a formidable foe to Govinda's Bunnu. Johny Lever as Gafoor Bhai was terrific.
"Head ya Tail" proved to be a hit number and Deewana Mastana was a box office success inspite of clashing with another David Dhawan comedy Mr and Mrs Khiladi which released on same day. This was second instance for Dhawan when his two films released on the same day. The first time was on 29th December 1989 when his Aag Ka Gola and Jurrat released together.
Deewana Mastana was special for Dadar-Mahim movie buffs like me as the iconic Plaza Cinema re-opened with this movie after it became a target in the 1993 Bombay blasts. There was a huge crowd lined up at the advance booking counters and the film ran housefull for the entire week here just because the audience wanted to experience the glory of Plaza once again. It was indeed a treat for its regular patrons like me. The timepass comedy that Deewana Mastana was turned out to be was an icing on the cake.
